normal hours vs. quiet hours?

Joanna - posted on 05/06/2010 ( 24 moms have responded )

I was wondering what everyone considers normal waking hours versus quiet hours. Like if you lived in an apartment/condo, what hours would it be acceptable for neighbors to start vacuuming/hanging pictures, or if you live in a house, for your neighbor to start mowing their yard in the morning? And what are the hours you think should be seen as quiet hours, meaning neighbors to turn down music and take a party inside and quiet down, etc?

This topic came to mind as I was awoken at 7:30 am this morning by my communities' landscapers (we are an association so we have landscapers to do the yards, which is every Thursday) chopping down bushes right outside my window. To some maybe that's a normal time, but my 2 year old sleeps from (used to be 10:30 but luckily she started going to bed earlier) 9:30 at night to 8:30, sometimes 9:30 in the morning, which means I sleep til about 8:30 every morning and hate being woken up earlier.

So, what do you consider hours that it's respectful to be quiet to those around you?

from 9 pm to 9 am we try our best to be quiet...otherwise I don't worry too much...

Well, I used to think from 9:30a-8:30p was what most people considered 'normal'.. Until I moved to Hawaii with my husband and the landscapers (I guess that's what you'd call them, though they really only cut the grass and nothing more) started up their lawnmowers at around 6:30/7a.. We were on base, too, so a lot of people do get up early. But when you have your first child, who's a baby and doesn't like going to sleep at a decent hour (sometimes it took until 2a to get him to go to sleep).. You just don't want to be getting up at the butt-crack of dawn! I say any time before 9:30a and after 8:30p should just be considered unGodly hours to do things so noisily!

Keep in mind that it might be beyond a "courtesy" thing and actually be a city ordinance thing! Around here city ordinance allows the noise 7am-10pm.
I go to bed between 1 and 2am I'm normally up by 8:30-9. Except for Monday mornings! We live on a street full of apartment buildings. The same gardeners work several of them. They start down the street at 7a and reach our place by 9-10a.

Our old neighbors complained when my bouncy little girl bounced after 8:30pm. We have kept the same "quiet time rule" since that time. (They moved away and the new neighbors are just as bouncy as my girlie, so now we're quiet to calm down for the night.)

Saying that we lived across the road from two night clubs (open from 8pmt in till 5am 7 days a week) for years, and the noise never bothered me or the kids it drove my hubby nuts he likes it quite, we are in the burbs now and the silence is maddening i miss the thumping music lol

I think on week days from 7am if fine and noise should stop by 8pm on weekends from 9am and should stop by midnight.

I was trying to find the laws on this in my area and it appears that there are none. I think a reasonable time frame is 7am-10 or 11pm. We live on 5 acres so it's not a big deal for us right now...but when we lived in town, it was nothing to see someone out early in the morning or late at night doing yard work. In the hot of the summer, sometimes that's the only time to get it done without making yourself sick.

It probably would annoy me Erin, although I think it's different when you have nice weather almost year round.

I don't mind stuff late at night and now that we're up early I probably wouldn't mind it so much now. Before when we didn't have Ethan and Matt was out playing until 2 and we didn't get to bed until 3-4 it was really annoying to have some idiot weed wacking at 7 am. Even now that we get up at 6 :30 I still don't want to hear it that early. We get 3 months out of the year that you can sit outside in the early morning with your coffee, listen to birds and chill....I hate when that is ruined by some over zealous lawn freak. ;)

I think it all depends on where you live, what the noise is and who your neighbours are. If you live in an adults only community than weekends are a free for all. Weeknights maybe 10.30pm is time to turn it down.

But if your like me and live in an apartment complex and you know your neighbours have a baby then you need to be mindful of that. By all means make noise but remember those around you. My neighbour downstairs is a jerk, who drives his car like he stole it, has music blasting ALL the time. Our apartments are soundproof and yet I can still hear his music word for word when he turns on his stereo ! Sooo rude !

Last year for my 25th birthday, I actually had a party (I never have parties or do anything), and it was a Saturday night. I had maybe 10 friends over for drinks and appetizers and had a game night, but everyone was gone by 9. I had my best friend from high school (who drove 3 hours to come down) and her boyfriend, and me and my husband (my 2 year old was asleep upstairs), and we were playing SceneIt, and it was 10:15 pm, when a COP came to the house and told us we were being too loud and someone called the cops.

I was like... are you SERIOUS?! at 10 pm on a Saturday night, and we get the cops called on us for playing SCENE IT?! (and my daughter slept through it, so obviously we weren't too loud). There've been people having parties outside at 3 am during the week and I don't call the cops (unless it's a repetitive thing, but once in a while, whatever, I'll just pout it out, haha). And I got the cops called on me! I couldn't believe it, and this topic just got me remembering that.

LOL Dana you'd hate it here then...

It's 7am - 9pm here during the week, and 9pm - midnight on weekends. It's important for workmen here (Aus) to start early so they avoid being outside in the hottest part of the day. We don't have issue with people doing yardwork late at night, because even in the middle of summer, with daylight savings, it is dark by 8.30pm.

I live in a house. I say 10 am and 10 pm. Unless it's a rare thing like a couple parties year or something. I suppose I could deal with yard work a little earlier, maybe 9 but, NOT if it's a chain saw or something.

i think 8-8 is pretty reasonable, maybe 8-9. i go to bed early and it drives me crazy when someone mows their lawn after 8 if i'm in bed. i just looked at my laws and it's 7-10.

I think that 8am to 9pm is pretty reasonable. On weekends, maybe 8am to 11pm.

Mind you, I live on 4 acres, so it's not really an issue for me. Although my mother sometimes has a bad habit of phoning at 7am.

I am pretty sure it is 7am - 11pm on weekdays here. I think it may be from 8am on weekends. But I'm not really certain.

I agree with Amiee 7am - 11 pm make as much noise as you need to... My hubby mow lawns and blows down early in the morning on weekends especially in summer. I'm always up at or before 7 anyway so don't mind early noise.

Charlie - posted on 05/07/2010

I think where i am its 7 am and the legal time limit for loud noise is 11pm , i know that one for a fact from my younger years of house party guerrilla neighborhood warfare :D

I don't even know if noise by laws exist on post for morning hours, LOL. You're likely to get woken up at 5 or 6 a.m. by the sound of a cannon when the flag goes up. (Good luck with complaining about that... ha!) But, the good thing is you get used to it quickly. And, it's military so it's not like they're changing it for you. LOL.
I'm sure they have noise by laws for parties and kids being out, we just haven't had a problem with it really.
In Arizona for civilians, the noise by laws were 8 a.m. (if I recall correctly) to 10 p.m. (I know that one is for sure). That was M-F and then during the weekend it was 9 or 10 a.m. (again not sure on the morning hours) and then 12 or 1 a.m. for the cut off. If you had music going after that, parties, etc. the cops would come out and issue a noise disturbance warning, the 2nd time you got a citation.
The great thing is when I lived there it was the middle of nowhere on 5 acres and while people had their parties, you couldn't really hear the music. (that had it's downsides too!)

I think 8am to 8pm would be enough time to let everybody get whatever 'noisy' chores they have done.

Johnny - posted on 05/06/2010

I believe our city noise bylaws are 7:30 am to 9 pm Monday - Saturday and 9am to 8 pm on Sundays. I find that fairly reasonable. Before kids, it was slightly annoying when we'd be trying to sleep in on a Saturday, but not seriously unreasonable.

Amie - posted on 05/06/2010

Ah, that's also our city noise bylaws so even if I did want to complain, no one would listen to me.

Amie - posted on 05/06/2010

Between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. have at 'er.

It's not always fun to be woken up early but with kids I'm used to next to no sleep. LOL

My neighbor does yard work at ridiculous times. For a while my boyfriend had to get up at 3 am to get to we hit the bed at 10, my neighbor would be mowing and weed whacking. Pissed us off. They'd also have pool parties like EVERY DAY and leave their freakin' radio next to our bedroom window, also pissed us off. I understand people have friends, people have parties, but move your shit away from my bedroom and please stop partying every night.

I think 9am to 9pm is reasonable for the extremely noisy things if you're in close proximity. I think it should be mandatory that people take their loud, stupid dogs in at night.

My neighbor hasn't been doing those things lately, morning mows and weekend parties. If those stupid dogs would just shut up across the street I'd be totally content.

I think from 8am is ok.
Any earlier than that and i'd be annoyed, though i'm always getting woken up WAY before that anyway :(
