Obese man wins McDonald's court case

SAO PAULO (AP) -- A Brazilian court has ordered McDonald's to pay a former franchise manager $17,500 because he gained 65 pounds while working there a dozen years.

The 32-year-old man says he was forced to sample food products each day to ensure that quality standards remained high because McDonald's hired "mystery clients" to randomly visit restaurants and report on the food, service and cleanliness.

The man also says McDonald's offered free lunches to employees, adding to his caloric intake while on the job. His identity was not released.

The ruling against McDonald's was signed Tuesday by judge Joao Filho in Porto Alegre.

McDonald's can appeal the case. A local company spokesman did not immediately return calls Thursday.

ok, so i used to work at mc donalds and hardees for about 3 years combined, and no they don't make you sample food. i do understand how hard they make it to eat anything other than their food-they won't let you go anywhere else for breaks. still that doesn't mean you can't take your own food. but once again, no microwave to use to cook food if you wanted to bring leftovers (like i like to do for lunch) instead of sandwiches.
i do agree it's hard to not eat there, but that's really not to say it's impossible. he should take responsibility for his own actions.

It's Brazil...darn close to Venezuela(communist country btw). Wonder if the guy had been forced to excersize by Micky D's if he would have sued them for that too! "I had a heart attack because I was FORCED to eat a free lunch with enough calories for my total daily intake and then they MADE me get on a treadmill!" Oh the tradgedy...*eye roll*

another example of some getting paid because they refuse to take responsibility for their own actions

I know people who work for Mcdonalds and they have never heard of sampling food because of mystery shoppers. If he did have to sample food did he have to eat an entire super size meal every day, why not try one fry? Does the free lunch every day not count as as quality control test?
My friends have worked there for over a decade and are not at all overweight as they are on their feet all day working hard.
Can I sue my local bakers shop for having the smell of warm freshly cooked bread wafting through the door as I go past therefore forcing me to go in and buy some?
I'm not a great lover of MacDonalds but I think in this case Mr Blobby needs to take responsibility for his own actions.

This is crazy! I have heard of situations like this before. 65 lbs over a dozen years is nothing really. What about the foods he consumed outside of work. This they obviously don't know of. Sampling the food items is one thing and I doubt that would have him gain that much. And just because there were free employee lunches available, did not mean he had to say okay to it.
