From the White supremacist (KKK) to people like this lady, I just wonder how do they get such extreme interpretations from the Bible..of the “All Loving , Merciful God”
This is so sad :-(((

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A woman accused of attempting to circumcise her baby at home using a box cutter and a pair of pliers faces assault and criminal mistreatment charges.

Keemonta Peterson, 29, of Portland, told police she decided to circumcise her baby at home after reading the Bible. She said she watched some YouTube videos about circumcisions before making the attempt in October, according to The Oregonian.

After the 3-month-old boy suffered two hours of uncontrolled bleeding, she called 911 and the baby was rushed to a hospital where he was initially listed in critical condition. The boy appeared to have recovered with no permanent injury.

According to the prosecutor, a doctor described the baby's condition upon arrival at the hospital as life-threatening, and the pain as immense.

The details emerged in a memorandum Deputy district attorney John Casalino filed this week in Multnomah County Circuit Court and obtained by The Oregonian. The document was filed to oppose Peterson's attempt to be released from Multnomah County jail.

Peterson had been locked up since her arrest March 8 and held on $550,000 bail. At a hearing Tuesday, the prosecutor tried to persuade a judge not to make it easier for Peterson to get out of jail pending trial.

But Peterson's attorney, Scott Raivio, argued her bail should be reduced. His arguments were supported by a Close Street Supervision deputy, who noted Peterson has strong family support and had been attending mental-health counseling three times a week before she was booked in jail.

Judge David Rees lowered Peterson's bail to $5,000. She posted $500 — the required 10 percent — and was released Wednesday to the supervision of the deputy.

She has been allowed to see her four children, who are staying with family members, during supervised visits. A trial was tentatively scheduled for June.

*Vomit* Oh, excuse me. So she forgot to take her crazy pills that morning?

Anyways, I'd usually get my knickers in knots because this is a double whammy for me. Interpreting the Bible to justify your crazy ideas and circumcision. But in this case... she was just wacko. And I don't think Christians and/or pro-circs deserve to have their hands' bloodied with this one.

the article says the baby didn't end up with permanent injury...does that mean he is uncircumcised?

Nope. It means that being circumcised is not considered an injury. :/

Anyways, about the religious aspect of circumcision, Paul is referring to people who justify circumcision as Christians for religious purposes. Not asthetic or hygiene or cultural purposes. Basically, a Christian is obligated to fulfill the entire law if he or she says "I circumcised my son because God's word told me to." So they would be obligated to the whole law. However, Christ's death and resurrection fulfilled the law and so a Christian still believing that God wants a son to be circumcised because of the law is denying Christ's work.

A Christian can circumcise for aesthetic or hygiene purposes just like everyone else does, though I think both completely ridiculous reasons to do so.

If this women had decided to remove any other part of a child's body with a pair of pliers and box cutter she would still be in jail, she would not be allowed to see her children, she would not have had her bond reduced so much.
The one and only reason any of this occurred is religion and the one and only reason she is being treated so leniently is because of religion. And it disgusts me.
If this were a dad who performed FGM on his daughter based on his religion, he would not be treated any where near as leniently.
This disgusts me, oh right I already said that.

Ok, I am going to get into this a teeny bit. Teresa, I promise to really try and contain myself though for you because I like you. ;)

This woman is getting leniency because she referenced religion and because it's a perfectly accepted practice when viewed through religious lenses. (Circ'ing itself, not her particular act mind you.) The methods used in the OT would have been an non-sterile knife or a sharp rock knife. But I go back to the leniency again by saying people tend to get away with a lot if they say it's part of their religion.

But yes of course she should be in jail, she's a crazy person.

She needs to sit down with a shrink who needs to evaluate her. If she's like this all the time she needs to go to jail and should never have custody of her kids. But it sounds like she needs some serious psychiatric assistance.

And to think I was scared to use a nail clippers on Eric for weeks after he was born! I was so scared I could possibly hurt him......

[deleted account]

The law sucks she deserves to be put in jail. There are no excuses in my book, religion or not..no excuses for deliberately hurting your baby.

Unforgivable..what a horrible story..i can't imagine the pain that young baby must of felt.I'm glad hes okay though. This did not take his precious life thank god , which it could of easily.:-( Shame on that mother if you could call her a mother.

Wow. I can't imagine a mother being able to cut and injure her child. I just don't get it. I don't know how it's mentally possible. When my daughter was three weeks old and had a big crying spell of fussiness it just about killed me. I rocked her, I carried her outside for fresh air, I swaddled, I nursed, I changed her, I sang to her, I did anything to make her feel better. I just can't imagine someone doing something like this to a poor innocent baby trusting their mother. Horrible

Different translations read that passage differently, that's the suckiest thing about the bible is all the different translations. Here's what the lew living translation says in Galatians 5
1 So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.
2 Listen! I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God, then Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses. 4 For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.

Still, that really shouldnt make any difference in this lady's trial. What she did was horrible and inhumane and no sane mother, Christian or not, would do that to her baby.
I hope she doesn't ever regain custody.

This story was extremely hard for me to read. I cannot imagine the horror that baby went through. I do not understand why in this situation this woman has been let out on bail. I don't understand how her bond went from $550,000, to $5,000. Why would you even set a bond for this woman. She is obviously insane. This deranged woman is claiming she got the idea to circumcise her son at home by reading from the bible. And this was enough for, apparently someone to think she deserved leniency. Why did they not send her to a psychiatric hospital for an immediate evaluation? So she attends therapy 3 times a week. Let's hold this woman in an institution and see how she behaves on a 24 7 basis. Any person that says My understanding of a book I read was to circumcise my 3 month old child at home, with household tools, in a non sterile environment, without thought of the risk to infection, or the possibility of him bleeding to death, is definitely NOT FIT to live with the rest of society.

[deleted account]

Loureen, I 'believe' (my memory sucks) that was more about those who were completely caught up in the law. Paul was trying to point out that Jesus is more important than the law.... not that you can't actually be circumsized.

Or something like that... I admit my wording sucks.

Of course, the truth of this situation has nothing to do w/ the Bible OR circumcision. Just some seriously disturbed woman and her poor baby.

And thats only if she believed in the old testament .......because while welcoming all, whether circumcised or not, the New Testament condemns those who push circumcision. There no discrimination in the New Testament against anyone for their being circumcised or not, but there is clear opposition to receiving circumcision and furious condemnation of those who encourage the practice.

'…I, Paul, am telling you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. Once again I testify to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obliged to obey the entire law. You who want to be justified by the law have cut yourselves off from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.' (Gal. 5:2-4)

In this astonishing use of imagery, Paul says that those who cut off their foreskins cut themselves off from Christ! If this was not clear enough he said plainly that they have fallen away from grace.

If she had really read the Bible, she would know that circumcision is to be done when the baby is 8 days old...not 3 months.
But seriously, this is incredibly sad. Can't imagine the undescribable pain this precious little one was experienced...and I am shocked that she has been allowed visitation with her children. Sad.

When I was a member of a Facebook breastfeeding promotion group and read their discussions, there was a woman whose husband had circumcised all 4 of their sons at home. Unsurprisingly, she'd lost custody.

[deleted account]

Thank you for that Jennifer cuz I am Christian and pro-circ (at least for my family, your kid's penis is all your business) and what this woman did is just sick and wrong. NO stable, sane person would do something like this. If it hadn't been an idea she got from the Bible it could've been from anything. Wonder what would've happened if she had been reading 'A Child Called It'...

That poor baby!! I really hope he's going to be ok.

You're right, Jennifer. If it hadn't been the Bible and circumcision, it would have been something else.

I just get pretty heated when people use the Bible to justify lopping of their kids' body parts, even if this woman was different in doing it herself, instead of getting a doctor to do her dirty work for her.

[deleted account]

My jaw is just dropped to the floor. That poor baby. I can't even imagine the pain he was going through. I just want to take him home with me and love him and take care of him. Just the thought of what she did to him knocks the breath out of me.

Will it fonction like it should, will he have pain??? I mean really what was she thinking. If she really wanted to have him circumcise she should have went to see a doctor she that the child would have been in good hands and with people that know what they're doing. Sick, just plain sick. I hope she never gets to see her kids again. That's child abuse!

Considering my feelings about circumcision, and my feelings about people who let the Bible do their thinking for them, I think I'm just going to stay out of this thread. Even though I have a pretty advanced vocabulary of both the profane and non-profane, I honestly do not think that there are any words adequate enough to express my rage and disgust.
