This was a topic of conversation at a party I went to not long ago.

If you had to lose one of your five senses which one and why?

This would be a permanent loss but totally your choice which one.

I have come to the sad conclusion that I would choose my sense of smell. I'll have to think about it some more. I truely love food, I love cooking, eating, experiencing different foods, tastes, seasonings, textures etc but touch, hearing eye sight are really important to life - so i can't do without either of those. At least if you keep taste you can experience SOME of the flavor.

I reckon taste or smell too. Haven't decided yet. Maybe both then I wouldn't be obsessed with food.

I haven't read any of the others on purpose. I think I would loose smell. It seems like it would be the easiest to live without. Plus, changing diapers would be a cinch.

I've gotta go with smell, the positive being that I will not have to smell my hubby's arse stinks anymore :-)

I'd have to go with smell too.
I remember last Christmas though it made cooking hard. I had to enlist others to help me taste my food as I went along. While I could still taste it was severely hampered by not being able to smell anything! Stupid winter colds.
I love food but I love being able to see, hear and feel the things around me more. My taste would still be there too, just not quite as intense, hopefully. lol

Hmm, that's a hard one. I suppose my sense of smell would be easiest. I know sign language so losing my hearing wouldn't be hard in that manner but, after seeing what my deaf sister misses out on in life, I don't think I could hang with out hearing.

Smell..only one i could live without and it wont affect me as much as losing any of the other ones.

Yep, I'd go with smell also. It wouldn't be fun, but it'd be a lot less intrusive than losing any of your other senses.

Hi Jodi,
A friend of mine was taking a certain type of medication (can't remember the name) and one of the side effects was loss of smell. She hated it, she actually lost 20 pounds in about 4 months because she hardly ate anything. She said she couldn't taste anything accept bitter things.
She literally had no sense of smell and therefore no sense of taste. It also took several months for it to return after she stopped taking the meds.
Although even knowing this I would agree with you and your hubby.
There are a lot of things I could do without smelling. :)

Interesting!! I had to really think hard about this, and when it all came down to it, I chose smell. After all, I have crappy sinuses and it affects my sense of smell half the time anyway. My sense of smell isn't that great....I will miss it when it comes to smelling food, and I know that smell is an important part of eating, but I can live with that. I might even be able to eat some things I normally wouldn't because I don't have to smell them as I eat, LOL.

I'm not sure I could live without the other senses (I'm sure I could if I had to, but I couldn't choose them over smell......)

I can also do without having to smell those people with bad personal hygiene.....if I have to stand back from you in the queue at the supermarket with my sense of smell, you know you have issues!!!

I asked hubby and he said the same thing :)
