This is disgusting. Personally, I'd never leave my daughter alone w/a doctor..not even her pediatrician whom I adore. There is just no call for it. Except of course for surgical procedures which thankfully there has only been one. Even then I sat w/her during anesthesia then stayed w/her til they wheeled her into OR, then was there when she came out. Not saying I'm immune to this...but parents need to take serious precautions...

Yes, I agree with all of you. It would never occur to me to leave my son alone with the pediatrician. It would make no sense. I don't stay with him out of precaution, but because it's the only logical thing to do as a parent. If my doctor (who is a woman) asked to see Lucas alone I would find that extremely weird.

There are so many people who trust Dr.s implicitly and I can see how he got away with it for as long as he did....but what about the people who worked in the office? the nurses? no one thought it was strange that he was seeing patients alone? I am a nurse and it would raise big red flags if the Dr. was seeing patients alone...and as a parent, there would be no way in hell, there is no reason a Dr. would need to see a child alone.

I cant believe parents would fall for that , im sorry if i sound harsh but they are idiots there is no reason for a pediatrician to be alone with a child .

As I was reading this, all I could think was "How in the world could this happen with the parents sitting right there?" and then I saw that he requested to see them alone. It's hard to believe that so many parents were willing to let them go in alone and unthinkable to me. But I guess it's because in the last almost 5 years, we've never once been asked that. It's terrible that this has happened and I hope that he will be charged and put away indefinately. But I also hope that parents will read this and make themselves aware that letting them go alone is not an appropriate request and act on their own instincts in the future.

I work in a GP practice and I could not tell you of a single case where any of our doctors has requested to see a child on their own. If a doctor did, that should put up some serious red flags in the mind of the parent. There have been cases of teenagers (either regarding birth control, STDs or pregnancy) where the doctors have needed to speak to the patient individually, but in that case a nurse will sit in on the consult.

There have also been cases here of doctors abusing patients during pap smears - one of which is in court at present - but this was adults. Still revolting, but as adults we have far more ability to defend ourselves. Leaving a child alone with ANYONE you don't trust wholeheartedly is just not worth the risk.

I don't think it's even a precaution that needs to be looked at. It's the stupidity of people thinking a doctor needs to see a child alone. /:) Seriously.... the one mom switched doctors after he asked to see her daughter alone. She knew doctors have no reason for that. It's not even that there are sick people out there but a doctor needs the parents input. Kids can not answer all the questions themselves. The parents need to know what is going on, if there's anything wrong, answer the questions, etc.

I remember something similar when I was a teenager. It happened the next town over. But it wasn't children, it was teenagers and young women the doctor had assaulted, while giving them their pap exams. Nice eh? I remember my doctor at the time (he was a male) being a little freaked out, he asked me numerous times if I wanted a nurse present during mine. I told him no it's ok. I know you won't do anything, if you were going to you would have by now. I trust you. That seemed to ease him a little bit but I can understand his discomfort. It makes all people not trust a certain type when things like that happen and go a little crazy. In this case, doctors.

I never ever leave my children alone with their doctor, not only out of precaution, but also so I can help answer any medical questions, make sure my children are behaving,to reassure my children that everything is OK, and so I can know what is going on medically while they are being checked. I don't get how a parent would leave their kid alone during an exam or whatever. This doctor is SICK!

I wouldn't leave my child alone with most adults in general. Me and my SO don't even let anyone watch our daughter except my mother. There are just too many sickos in this world and unfortunately things like this often happen close to home...you hear about kids being abused and molested by a trusted official, a close family friend, even some family members. I wouldn't leave my child in the exam room with only the doctor, but leaving my child in the OR is a much safer bet that no one specific person will hurt my child because there are many people in the room to deter a single predator from committing such an act.
