Pet peeve of mine!

So I live in an apartment building and there's four buildings all together here, they are shaped like this | | _ | so in the middle of the three ones there's a gazebo and a black top area that kids play on all the time. Now the thing that bothers me is many of the kids bring out their dogs with them unsupervised to play. The kids age between 6-12 with most being around 8 that regularly bring out their dogs. The dogs are all smallish, some tiny chihuahuas, some beagle sized, some springer sized.

And honestly, if there's no one outside they walk their dogs fine. They usually clean up the poop but not always. The biggest issue is I see these kids let other kids walk their dogs, there's dogs being tied on top of picnic tables unattended' there's dogs being dragged around by kids trying to get the dog to run, there's dogs getting into teeny tiny tufts with other dogs and the kids struggle to keep them apart. Kids loose grip of leashes and have to chase down their dog, kids feeding dogs junk food, or letting the dogs misbehave and dig in the wood chips or pee on the pavement. They all seem to bring out their dogs as some status thing, like I'm better then you because I have a dog.

On walks I sometimes walk past kids walking their dogs and they are struggling to keep their dog off of me or Eric, or they are horribly misusing commands like heel heel heel over and over dragging their dog to them and trying to get control.
*sigh*
ok, that was alot longer then I expected! Maybe I'll go back and add some paragraphs.
Ok, so all these dogs and kids presumably have parents so why do they let this go on? The parents aren't outside with them? Do you let your kids take the dog outside alone unsuperrvised?
From my window I see a LOT of animal mis treatment and I do NOT like it!
I'm going to talk to the manager......

It seems these parents think that just because the dog is small that it's safe for their kid to be in charge.
But the mistreatment I've seen is sad. And half the time it's not intentional, just that kids don't know enough to keep dogs safe.

Nope, I never let my daughter walk our dogs unsupervised. My smaller dog is mostly well behaved, but if she happens to see another dog on a leash while we are out walking, she goes a bit nuts. We have tried a number of things to get her to stop this behavior, but she doesn't. She's not aggressive, if she actually gets to another dog, she sinffs & wages her tail & acts friendly, but the point is, when she goes nuts she's difficult to control & wouldn't want that in the hands of my 10 yr old.

Our other dog is an Irish setter . . . he's a very busy boy! I don't allow any child to walk him. One squirrel or rabbit & you're off for a ride if your not paying attention! lol!

I personally think kids & dogs should ALWAYS be supervised!

i would defiently complain !!! i also hate having someone who walks their dog down the street and lets them do their business in my front yard !!! i have a large back yard my dogs do their business in and i still pick up after them (i hate the smell of dog poop) luckily they both poop in the same area everytime they go :)
i dont think parents should allow children to walk the family pet by themselves..children should be supervised at all times with pets in and outside the home.

I detest dog poo smell. I'm SO happy to not have dog poo anymore! Cat litter is far easier IMO then dog poo in the yard. Now if i could toilet train my cats it would be heavenly!

You can smell it it's so gross and it's not the neighbours right next door even though I thought it was because the new ones don't have a dog and the people who left cleaned their yard.

I am ready to go around to peoples houses in this neighbourhood about their dog shit in their yard. I can't go out to my clothes line without nearly barfing. Why do people have to have dogs. Seriously. How do they put up with the stench in their own yard or are they just disgusting and enjoy it. Fuck it pisses me off.

Hey, I have a dog and I hate that too Lisa. Cleaning up after the dogs some of the time is not enough and no - it is not cute when someone's pet jumps on your toddler and knocks her over. That happened to us at a park that's on leash only. Stupid dog just comes tearing over and jumps on her. No, it wasn't vicious. Still doesn't make it cute. Man, I would be so embarrassed if my dog did something like that.

I am biased against dogs and dog owners. I'm sure there are lovely responsible owners out there, I know many on this forum, but the loads of poo I've stepped in or the number of times I've had to prevent my children from being knocked over by someone's dog because "ooooohhh he's SO happy to see your girls'!" makes me hate dogs.

Just one of the many reasons we got out of community apartment living. I can't stand rubbing elbows with people.

Wow. That's bad. I used to walk my dog alone when I was that age but I was a) a pretty responsible kid and b) living in a less populated area. Oh and c) walking a dog that was older and well-trained.

For my own kids it will depend on where we live and what kind of kids they are. Our dog will be 10 when Freja is 8 so she probably won't be too hard to handle. But at the same time, if there were a billion other kids outside with uncontrollable dogs, I wouldn't want her out alone with ours no matter how well-behaved. That just sounds like a giant mess.
