I certainly hope this is an April Fools' Day prank. PETA is offering a free vasectomy to one lucky contest winner who can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that his pet is neutered (seriously, they're asking for a lot of documentation) and to the guy who can satisfactorily answer their question: Why should PETA neuter you?

I haven't been a big fan of PETA in the past -- their "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign really gets under my skin. This campaign, this twofer they're running, seems almost too funny to be true.

And the rationale behind the giveaway is the funniest part.

I'm all for spaying and neutering and totally agree with PETA here that it's the necessary and humane thing to do. According to their stats, between six and eight million abandoned or unwanted pets enter shelters each year, and the best way to control this cat and dog crisis is to prevent pregnancy in the first place.

But their logic for human sterilization is where they lose me.

Human overpopulation is crowding out animal life on the planet, and dog and cat overpopulation is creating a euthanasia crisis that is a crying shame. Disappearing wilderness, vanishing water resources, and pollution is the price that future generations will pay for more human births, while losing their lives is the price that millions of homeless dogs and cats pay when guardians neglect to "fix" their companion animals.

Hear that? Your human births are crowding our planet and taking up precious space that could be given to cats and dogs. Reproduction is so 2000 and late -- you should reduce, reuse, recycle, but do not reproduce. While I agree that a population crisis of any species is an environmental problem, I don't think I follow their logic here.

If they really believed that human population was damaging the animal kingdom, and truly believed that human sterilization is the only solution, then why not start a campaign telling men and women to get spayed and neutered? Would they support the mass sterilization of environmentalists? Maybe a celebrity ad campaign with a big ol' "Do Not Enter" sign on a woman's belly. Pregnancy hurts the Earth and the animals, after all!

This twofer is cutsie, but I think it sends the wrong message. I'll stick to getting my pet advice from Bob Barker, and Bob only.

What do you think of this PETA campaign?

LMAO!!!! Really? How ridiculous, and stupid is that?

My only question is... are ALL of the members of PETA already "neutered"??? Unless and until they could prove that one, I'm inclined to ignore the heck out of them. They don't love animals. They just hate people more.

I hate PETA. Bunch of militant, crazy, stupid, and dangerous people.

I'm sorry, but cows don't need to vote. Dogs can't drive. And giraffes don't need to get married, either. Animal rights is a joke. Animal cruelty is a PROBLEM.

I can not stand PETA. I think they harm their cause more than help. On this issue though, I happen to completely agree with them. We're overpopulating the Earth and are so completely convinced of our own superiority and greatness that we refuse to admit it.

Emma, I believe that they are FOR spaying and neutering animals too:

"'m all for spaying and neutering and totally agree with PETA here that it's the necessary and humane thing to do. PETA sucks donkey balls BUT I love this campaign. We need to be talking about this issue. Hopefully PETA sucking so much doesn't distract from the issue though.

I don't know anything about PETA, but from what I've read here I think they have their priorities messed up, spay and neuter, is good, but mass euthanasia? That's a quick fix I guess but it's sort of the opposite of saving the animals! And sure I'm all for more vasectomies since there's a ton of men out there who don't want kids, don't want a stable partner and just want alot of sex. Go for it, neuter them. But animals don't get to have more rights then humans, no one can argue that humans are the most intelligent species, so we have to care for the other species, but not turn over power to them!

I think it's funny. It doesn't bother me at all. And a good deal for some guy who wants a vasectomy but can't afford it.

"Animals do have rights to live a free and happy life in their natural habitat. We capture them, torture them kill and use them whichever way we see fit. I do agree with them there, that its wrong. I am for the ethical treatment of animals. I just think they are a bunch of hypocrites."

That's animal cruelty, not animal rights. PETA thinks cats and dogs should have the same rights as humans. What rights do humans have? We can vote, marry, drive, hold a job...all things that animals really don't frickin' need.

Ohh. So they're trying to encourage human neutering. I'd support the neutering of PETA.

Wow so they are against neutering but can't find homes for all the pets their anti-neutering is creating??

"PETA has opted to "put down" 25,840 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding them "forever homes."

PETA's "Animal Record" report for 2010, which the animal rights group itself filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, shows that PETA employees killed 94 percent of the dogs and cats in their care last year. During all of 2010, PETA found adoptive homes for just 44 pets. "

That and they pour fake blood on people and shit like that. Not cool. Sure fight for animal rights, but don't violate people's rights to walk down the street without being attacked.
