NORFOLK, Va. - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans to create a pornographic website to promote its animal rights and vegan diet message.

PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles on Tuesday that the Norfolk, Va.,-based group has applied with ICM Registry to launch the website peta.xxx.

Rajt says the website will feature graphic videos and photographs. She noted that PETA has used porn stars and nudity to get its message across in the past. She says a pornographic site will allow PETA to reach a broader audience and that publicity about the site is just as important as the site itself.

Rajt says November is the earliest that PETA could receive approval for the site, which was first reported by The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk.

Southern Methodist University marketing professor Daniel Howard told the newspaper that the website will backfire. He says using a pornography website to promote a message isn't socially acceptable to a vast majority of Americans.

Well, what do you guys think? I've been calling PETA extremists for quite some time now, but this has taken them well past my idea of extremism and into a league of their own. In my view, these days PETA just looks like one big joke. This has spurred many new jokes at their expense (my personal favourite was "What will it be PETA? Vegetables or barnyard animals?" Gross, I know, but I had to laugh.) This could really damage their credibility with their more conservative supporters.

I would think that they could make more progress focusing their efforts on educating children (appropriately of course) on animal welfare. But now that I think about it... I really don't want the operators of a porn site educating my daughter about anything!

Keep in mind also that I am not basing my opinion from an anti-porn stance (I watch a bit now and then). This just makes me laugh. I laugh at the idea and I laugh at PETA.

Yea I'm not surprised by this move either. Like Joy said, they really aren't animal rights activists anymore. I think their just a bunch of fame hungry publicity whores.

It's okay to love animals...it's not okay to LOVE animals.

That's all I can think of when I hear PETA and PORN in the same sentence. :P

I am scratching my head on this one....porn and animal rights...now how do those two correlate. At one point before PETA became extreme I supported the actions they sought in order to change policies regarding animal safety but after they lost their mind, became extremists and started using women who only identified themselves as sexual objects I became disgusted with them. They are no longer animal rights activists. They lost sight of that when they turned to extreme measures for the sake of publicity.

I am all for the ethical treatment of animals, I do not want to eat animals that have been neglected.

Honestly, sex sells.

Hey a naked man / woman I'll never eat meat again? How will this work?

My kids play the PETA version of Cooking Mama, where they chop up animals, meant to turn them veggie but they like the blood and gore and then quite happily eat chops for dinner.

I second that. Once upon a time they had a purpose, and went about it with dignity. But those days are looooong over.

I hate PETA. They are insane, hypocritical, extremist assholes and I don't put my name anywhere NEAR their's. If they endorse something I'm likely to boycott it just on principal. :P
