Punishments that wouldn't fly now...

The Dad Shoots Teens Laptop post got me thinking about this. My sisters, cousins and I always end up on the topic of "Yeah, well, when I was a kid I had to..." and continue to tell our punishments from our childhoods. Many of which, I'm thinking most parents these days would be flabbergasted and call CPS on our moms if they knew! Here's a few from my childhood:

1) My sister and I came home drunk one night in the middle of summer. The next day we had to reshingle the shed roof in 90 degree weather. (My mom DID keep us hydrated and sunscreened!)

2) The first time I was caught swearing, I had to shovel manure into our garden...in the rain.

3) My two older sisters (Irish twins) were fighting maliciously for about a week straight during the summer (I had a SAHM), so my mom tied them together for a day.

4)I once threw a stick at my sister, I had to load up our wagon (like, a farm wagon, not a little red wagon!) with wood from the wood pile...then re-rank it.

5) I got kicked off the bus, so I had to walk to school for a month, that's 8 miles to and 8 miles back, mostly hills.

I hated the punishments, but they worked. I would say my mom did a good job on me and I can laugh at the punishments! And you can bet your butts, when my kids start doing the same crap I used to, they'll be doled out the same punishments...bring it on CPS!!! lol What "horrible" punishments did you have to endure that many moms today would be flabberghasted by?

It became illegal in Canada to spank under age 2 or 12 and older and by using any tools other than a hand in 2004....

There are laws that control or prohibit spanking in many countries. (i.e. *Canada, spanking is restricted but not necessarily illegal. As of 2004, it is now illegal in Canada to (1) spank a child under age 24 months, (2) spank a child age 12 or older, (3) spank with any kind of implement such as a belt, switch or paddle - regardless of the age of the child, (4) spank children you are not the parent of, and (5) spank "bare bottom", regardless of the age of the child.

They're a bit harsh, but not abusive.

This one time, I was caught swearing when I was 13, and I had to do everyone's chores: Dishes, laundry, dusting, washing windows, vacuuming, gardening, etc. for about a month.

(Lesson learned: Don't say "d**n." Any other swears are fine, though. Just kidding!)

I didn't even say "dang" or "stupid," not even "that sucks" for almost a year after that.

Most of these seem like good discipline methods.

The one thing my mom(and aunt and my mom's friend) would do to me and my big brothers that I hated and think was wrong was dunking our heads in the toilet. Not our face but like a swirly without the flushing..... Her friend even tried to do it a few times after peeing in the toilet first, though my mom doesn't know that.

Now, my mom and her friend have CP and my brothers and I were little shits a lot, but that punishment still bothers me more than any spankings or swattings ever did.

I once had a boyfriend who came from a small Caribbean island. They had these very big graters used for making for coconut milk. They were hand made by punching nails through a sheet of metal, and were very jagged If they got in trouble they were forced to kneel on the graters with a weight on their backs for a certain time, say an hour.

I once asked him why he had all these little scars on his knees, and that was the explanation. Jeez - it sounded very medieval...

I love your mothers punishements, and in no way do I see them as abuse.

When in trouble in the summer I once had to weed the garden, by garden I mean a huge veggie garden, with 5 rows of every veggy you can think of. Another summer my grandma made me repaint her whole fence.

My parents and grandparents fully believed in hard work punishments, they did not believe in grounding. Which I also believe in as well. Groundings are a teenagers dream come true. A week alone in your bedroom where you can sleep all day.

My mom worked nights, so my brother and I were locked out side all day. If we were quiet in the morning, we got to stay in later, but the first time we woke her up, we would get tossed out and the door locked until 4. The latest we ever made it was noon. We had the hose for water, and the neighbor lady made us sandwiches for lunch. That was a different time though. There were sahm all through our neighborhood. If we did something wrong, they had no problem calling our mom! We had our mouths washed out, had to walk to school if we got kicked off the bus, and had hard manual labor doled out.

We had chores, including mowing our acre yard with a push mower. We didn't complain much, because we mowed other people's lawns for money. Also did all kinds of farm chores for money. At 12 I'd haul hay until 2 or 3 in the morning for 4 to 5 weeks straight. We all switched off driving the truck for our break. Walking cattle was another seasonal job. Instead of using trailers, we'd turn the cows loose on the section road and walk behind them to drive them to the next pasture. Usually 10 to 12 miles. Most of the stuff I did as a kid that would be 'abuse' now, I choose for myself!

I never lived in the country, but when I was little we lived in a small, kid-filled trailer park.

"IN OR OUT!" my mother would scream at us. I don't think she ever locked the door but if we chose out and then came back in, that was it - we were waving to our friends through the window. lol

Sherry, growing up in the country, we were prone to the in again, out again syndrome. You know, where you're inside, go outside for 10 minutes, come back inside, over and over and over. After several warnings, my mom would lock us outside for an hour! lol Never bothered us any! lol

I don't have any bad punishments from my childhood, my parents weren't that great at punishing me or rather catching me, although my dad did kick me down the stairs once for bringing a toy to the table. I think I was ten and my guess is he was high although I didn't know it at the time. But I've got some great ones form my moms generation. When my uncles were teenagers they let their hair grow out a bit and my grandpa told them they'd better get their hippie hair cut by the time he got home or they'd be sleeping on the porch. One was smart enough, the other wasn't and spent a long cooooooold night on the front porch. My aunt used to smack my cousin on the head with a hairbrush if she squirmed while getting her hair done. My mom broke a wooden spoon over my brothers butt. And the funniest story I've ever heard from them was not a punishment by parents but worth mentioning lol. Altogether I think my moms family had 6 kids, 3 boys 3 girls and the girls had to do everything. They had to make all the beds including their brothers, do the laundry, do all the cooking and every night but sundays do the dishes. So that one night a week, they would get even by taking every single dish out of the cupboards when cleaning off the table for the boys to clean. lol I remember the first time I heard that story I was fifteen and my uncle goes, "you did what?!?!?!" my other uncle laughing hysterically goes, "you didn't know?!" apparently after all those years, he never cottoned on.

Jackie, there might not be too big of a worry with nuns. My older daughter went to a Catholic school last year and there weren't any nuns. And any nun that smacked my daughter with a rule would have some explaining to do. Especially now that she attends a public school

I was in 3rd grade and I got sparkly lip gloss for christmas. I went to Catholic school and I decided to wear it. It was clear but made my lips sparkle. I was very excited. The teacher (nun) grabbed me by the wrist and pulled me down to the bathroom where she rubbed these hard paper towels all over my mouth trying to rub the "sin" off. She told me if I acted this way again I would be headed to a life on the streets and that I would not amount to anything because I was ruining God's temple. Needless to say I told my mom when I got home. She stormed into that school the next day, she screamed at the principal and scolded the nun and then transferred me to public school.

If a nun did that to my child...you better be calling for a stretcher because bitch is goin' down.

I don't like the idea of making it illegal because then you have the government telling you exactly how to dicipline your child. I do agree with making it illegal to spank with anything other than your hand.

Laura, my older daughter is medium complexioned like me (I don't know how well you can see her face in that picture because she has her toque on) and the only time I left a red mark on her was when we were snapping towels at each other just messing around. I felt bad when I did that.

I always thought that was kinda racist to say if it leaves a mark it's abuse. I mean my kids are whiter then white. See through mostly!

If I catch Eric when he slips I usually leave a mark for a few hours.

Though it's never on his butt.

That could be the telling sign. But I'm sure I could hit a dark skinned child a,or harder then a light skinned child and leave less of a mark.

Ok, Laura♥ thanks. I don't really know if it's illegal or not in New York to use anything other than your hand now. Back when my parents were growing up and probably even when I was growing up you could use anything within reason. My parents didn't do that and I try hard not to spank either. But it probably varies from state to state. In CA you can't spank at all.

It's illegal in all of Canada to use anything other than your hand to spank- I don't know when that started. I do know however that it can't always be monitored because one of the Brownie leaders was telling me about how her great grandma used to whack her with a slipper and throw things at her. Yikes!

Laura, that's only illegal in some states. And forget just getting hit with it, my mom had a wooden spoon broken across her bum by her mom for something.

Eh I was only spanked (with the palm of the hand) or sent to my room for things. Like the time my brother, myself and a few other friends decided to play chicken with the cars coming down our street. I got grounded for a week.

I remember getting hit with a belt once by my paternal grandfather for something I don't even remember (I was 4 so it could've been talking back) and being slapped across the face once by my mom for telling her I did't have to listen to her because she wasn't my real mom.

I'm reading some of the topic links on the side of my screen and one of them mentions soap. Soap wouldn't work very well on my children especially since my 11 month old eats it as though it's a delicacy! Seriously, she will grab a bar during a bath and begin to chew on it. Mostly I got privileges taken away.

Nothing extreme at all.

We all rarely did bad stuff so our punishments were usually mild like no ice cream after dinner or no tv tomorrow.

Worst I ever got was I called a boy ugly while at a play practice and so I wasn't allowed to be in the play anymore.

Or equally as sad was one day my mom said I couldn't decorate my bike with the neighbor kids for fourth of July Minnie parade and when she left I did it anyways and so I wasn't allowed to ride in the parade.

Those were the most extreme punishments I ever got

My Dad however, had just told me that he'd applied for a job for me at his place of work and that he would be in on the interview etc. I'd just told him that I'd been accepted to my chosen college to study dance and was seriously pi$$ed off that he'd forged my application. My Mum was pretty awesome and could keep us in check with a 'look', if that didn't get us a swat on the butt did it. The one time she really 'got' me, I was about 13 and told her to F! off. She soaped me. I think it was the shock that did me in, cause she was smaller than me yet she dragged my ass into the kitchen, put a (tiny) blob of soap on her hands, wet it and washed my mouth out without me getting away. Needless to say, I never swore at her again.

My Dad however, was a pig. A nasty, abusive pig. The one and only time I swore at him, he chased me upstairs, clotheslined me into a wall, grabbed me around the throat and squeezed. The noise woke my sister up and when she opened the bedroom door, the asshole threw me down the stairs. I heard him telling her that she had been sleepwalking and that it was all a bad dream.

One time though she caught me sneaking back in after a night out. She thought I was in bed. The screen door creaked and my mom who was sleeping on the couch flew into a rage, flung open the door and threw me up against the wall by my throat. She then immediately let me go. She tried to ground me but it never worked since she was always working. I turned out ok but my sister didnt. She is a bum and discipline would have been good for her.

My Dad was a softy both when my parents were together and after when we would visit he never punished us. Although he definitely did embarrass us a ton. He would hug and kiss us and tell embarassing stories in front of our friends and even more so when were acting out of line.

A good laugh to read some of your punishments. I am sure they weren't at the time but I bet they kept many of you at bay... ;)

I never really had any and I wish I had. I was a terrible child and teen (drinking and smoking by 13, taking off for 3-4 days at a time). Although I blame that on not having any consequences. My Mom had a terrible childhood and moved out at 16. She was worried that if she did anything with me I would leave too. She was also a fairly abscent mother, so I pretty much raised myself.

The only things I remember is being spanked with a wooden spoon of which broke, so the next time it was a plastic one which broke, then it turned into a metal spoon (I wasn't spanked often but it was traumatic when I was)... sigh...

I would have taken any of your punishments. It may have kept me inline a bit. ;)

Oh, I also remember her hitting me in the head and yelling at me when I cried to have my hair washed, I was about age 5-8.

I mostly just got yelled at and swore at. I was called a witch more times than I can recall. Guess I should've made up some brew and created a new mother! ;)

She was a single, young mother (17 when she had me, divorced my Dad when I was 5) and I have no siblings.. :(

So, really nothing funny for me to look back on. Too bad. Needless to say I don't talk to her anymore. Maybe it would've been different if I had gotten some good punishment like all of you. ;)

I know my children are COMPLETLY different than I was. I am quite strict and far from abscent - they probably wish I would go away for an hour (too bad, I say, love them too much)...LOL

I can't think of any "horrible" punishments. I was a pretty easy as a kid and my parents were pretty permissive. I remember being spanked a few times or sent to my room. I got grounded from the phone, going out with friends as a teen. That's about it.

When I was 15 I was being a smart ass with my mom. I broke a glass jar by kicking it on our front porch because I was mad she locked me out of the house. (She'd gone out to run errands and was running late.) And I had to pee so bad! So I took it out on the glass. My mom got home and told me I had to clean it up now. I rebelliously refused and was acting like a total twit. She lost it and whacked me on the head with the dust pan. I was shocked because this was sooo out of character for my mom. It didn't hurt but the shock alone got me to go quietly clean up the mess.

But after that, when she had friends over I told them that my mom likes to get into the wine and then beats me with dustpans. Yeah, I was a little shit as a teen. They did know I was joking, but still.

You bet we ran she had very good aim, one of us always landed up getting the slipper or whatever was close to hand at that point.on a few occasions a friend got caught until it became common knowledge that when Mrs Marques started and you couldn't understand the best thing to do was run and fast.

My parents were much the same as Elfrieda's. The look, mostly from my father along with the sigh from my mother was generally enough. I was very easily cowed and suffered quite a guilty complex over transgressions.

Unfortunately for me, I somehow doubt my daughter will be that easy. I could see myself doing some of the things your parents did. I am a big believer in natural consequences, and those seem like some doozies.

Oh and I used to work for our version of CPS. If we'd been called out on this, we probably would have scraped together our meager salaries to buy your parents a trophy.
