Quick! You find a hair in your food...

What do you do?
What if you find a bug (not some big nasty bug, but like a little bug that came in the lettuce for your salad?)

I found a short hair in my bagel's cream cheese today (from Tim Hortens), but I just pulled it out, checked the bagel over, and continued eating it lol.

Personally, I would freak out. Even if I was at home cooking and had made my plate and saw my own hair in my food. It just grosses me out. I would go back and show them the hair and demand another one.

What else is attached to the hair? a peice of dandruff, other particles that stick to hair, is the hair clean? when was it last washed? ugh ugh yucky yuck - ok, im going to quit on this topic - im going to go puke now.... LOL

I would throw the food out if there was hair in it - ive actually had this happen a few times -- it disgusts me to no end -- (like i said in another post, im disgusted by people's bodily fluids) the first thing that comes to mind is their scalp oils, i gag or even throw up, im that disgusted by it.

Bugs would be disgusting to find while eating out -- people really need to make sure none of this shit is in the food, if they want to keep their rep going - i really dont care -- yes, there are instances where shit happens - but that is the cooks job -- hairnets, clean hands, etc. I shouldn't find hair or bugs in my food at all - or anything else for that matter.

yeah, i've had this happen to me a lot, especially when i was little. my grandma bought me a taco and i had eaten half of it when i found a long nasty hair in it. i almost threw up and my grandma took my taco back and got her money back for it. i stayed away from that place for years.

also had a few times where "flour bugs" (little black beetles that often are found in flour, very tiny) and little house moths made homes in my cereal boxes and flourished. and i, being the little girl i was who loved cheerios and yummy cereal and stuff, had the misfortune to open the boxes and 1) pour milk over the cereal before realizing the flour bugs were in the cereal, or 2) be bombarded by moths flying up out of the boxes and into my face.

also, i lived for a year and a half (until this past September) in a roach-infested hell hole. so yeah, became paranoid.

needless to say, i check all my food for any foreign objects before eating it, and when i find something i freak out just a little bit...

i would probably have at the very least gagged and ran back to wherever i got the bagel with the hair still in it and been quite pissed. i'd have wanted my money back and wouldn't have eaten there again, haha. :(

Anything in my food that isn't meant to be there an its going in the bin. I once found 2 maggots in some fruit I bought at supermarket so took it back and they gave me a weeks worth of free shopping.

Hmm extra protein yum yum..

Na I would just pull it out and that's it. Things happen it would be a different story it were a finger an toe or a band aid.

lol, Jocelyn- that's what i do, as long as it doesn't resemble a pube or isn't nasty looking it's not going to stop me from eating....
however, if there is a bug i am DONE, and done with the place i got the food from.

Hair? I'd probably just do what you did. Especially if it looks anything like mine, because I shed a lot, so who knows, maybe I shed it.

If it's just ONE bug, a little leaf eating bug, in my salad, that happens sometimes. I may lose my appetite, or wonder how much they actually washed my veggies. But I wouldn't flip out or anything, unless it was like, a big nasty cockroach or something.

I can't handle hair or bugs or anything in my food. I have been in many resturants where these things have ended up on my plates, and have always sent my food back. I worked in resturants from the time I was 16 until sometime in my early 20s. I know that it is a pain for the waitress, but I am always nice about it, just let them know that there is whatever in my food, and I will not be eating it, nor will I be paying for that portion of my meal. I almost never take a replacement meal or the dessert that they inevitably offer.

If it's something that I ordered from a drive thru I will throw it out and call the store when I get home. Not because I am looking for free food, but because I believe that the store manager has the right to know about the product they are sending out.

But to each their own. I just can't handle non-food items in my food.

I found a hair in my food once when we went out for my birthday supper, no less. I only discovered it once it was already in my mouth and I'd been chewing for several seconds. I didn't want to make a scene so I just kind of discreetly spit it into my napkin and drank most of my glass of wine in one gulp to a) disinfect and b) quell my nerves.

I finished my meal, but it was a tough go.

Remove it and keep eating unless it's like a pubic hair then I take it back and ask for a new one.

Iris - posted on 01/31/2011

It would be in the trash and I'd lose my appetite. Just thinking about it, I feel gag reflex coming.

I usually just pick out the hair and keep eating after checking oit for others - things happen. Bug in my salad? Shows me they didn't wash their greens which makes me think not only of the bugs but the chemical sprays for pesticides and such which I find gross, so I send it back and ask them to make sure it's washed this time around! I was at a restaurant once and I found a hair in my food.. I picked it out, because it can happen.. 2 fork fulls later there was another, and then i checke the whole dish and there were like 3 more, so 5 hairs total.. The restaurants was very appologetic, offered me a new plate, I said no I was too disgusted, they offered me a free desert, and yet again - I was too grossed out.. They still charged for my husbands meal, even though he was pretty off put on the meal as well even though his wasn't hairy.. i'm NEVER going back there...

Katherine - posted on 01/31/2011

Take it back and ask for my money back!! Gross!!!!

Edit to add: I would not be inspecting to figure out WHAT kind of hair lol!

Joanna - posted on 01/31/2011

I have eaten bugs before, so that wouldn't bother me. Of course I'd toss it though as I don't prefer them. And I'd just pull off the hair and maybe the surrounding area, and finish eating.

And now all I can think about is a blueberry bagel with strawberry cream cheese. Stupid dairyfree diet. I'd even eat the hair if it meant I could have a bagel.

A hair (depending on the type of hair it is...)I will pull it out and gag then keep eating...a bug..no I would return it lol

Must have been an actual old Tim Horton eyebrow hair-seriously his eyebrows were crazy!

Lindsay - posted on 01/31/2011

OK. Honestly, if I found anything like that in my food, it'd be in the trash because my appetite would be long gone. ick.

Jenn - posted on 01/31/2011

I don't know - some people have softer, straighter pubes - just sayin' LOL!!! But yeah, I'd still eat it. Not the hair of course. :P I had a friend who ordered a pizza once and it had a freakin' band-aid on it!! BARF! They got a free pizza obviously.

yeah....betcha you're rethinking that 'short hair' sandwich now, huh?
*big cheesy grin*

Bonnie - posted on 01/31/2011

As for the hair in my bagel, I would probably just break off the piece of bagel that had the hair, throw it out, and just continue eating the rest of the bagel.

Bonnie - posted on 01/31/2011

I once ate at a chinese restaurant visiting family and found a fly that had been cooked (burned to a crisp). I was about 15 years old at the time. I freaked. My father spoke with the manager of the restaurant and if I remember correctly, they gave us a discount, but we never went back. I was just too disgusted.

Jackie - posted on 01/31/2011

I probably would have done the same, truthfully.

And as long as the bug wasn't some big, hairy. man eating critter I'd probably throw it out and continue on. Although I'd probably be inspecting each bite first though.

A hair...I'd probably stop eating the bagel and go back to either get my money back or at least a replacement. A bug in my lettuce wouldn't "bug" me so much lol At least that's excusable, since lettuce comes from the ground....
