Radiated foods

Obviously from the situation in Japan with the nuclear plant people are wondering about the fish and if the winds blow right..the food that's grown in California. Do you think we should worry about the foods we're buying for a while or do you think it's just as much radiation as microwaving it and not to worry?

I don't know tons about this, but it makes me leary about buying foods.

I agree with Lisa. My husband works at a particle accelerator and he can't believe how crazy people are going. The ones who need to be concerned are the workers at the plant who are trying to fix it. Even in Tokyo, the levels of radiation are safely within limits. Radiation warnings are published at very low leves. You get more radiation in a full body scanner at the airport or getting an x-ray. People need to listen more carefully to what the media is actually saying and if they aren't convinced, do some research of their own. I really hope that this craziness doesn't derail people's focus from all those suffering in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami.

If there was a major meltdown, it still would not significantly impact North American crops. Yes, there would be increased radiation, but not at danger levels. You should be far more concerned about cancer risks from commonly used pesticides.

@Caitlin the scary thing is; if something apocolypitc was *actually* happening I wouldn't believe it. I've been fed too much BS to take anyone's word for it.

Hehe, Sharon. Some are benefitting from the craziness!

You know, I am seeing so many posts from people on Facebook railing about the giant cloud of fallout that is looming over Washington and Alaska...over and over they go on and on. My husband just rolls his eyes.

Yes, a bit leaked. No, it's not conglomerating in a giant cloud wafting on the jet stream to get us all. It disperses, and like Johnny said, you'll get more from one x-ray.

There really isn't an ominous cloud of radiation coming to get everyone. My husband works in the nuclear industry. It's not that much.

This really isn't chernobyl.

Jennifer, if something apocolyptic was *actually* happening, would it really matter that you don't believe it anyway?

Wow.. Just wow.. haven't been reading many online sources or anything, just the evening news, but they're not all apocolyptic or anything, pretty much facts and frightening video clips from the tsunami.. People need to chill..

*clouds of fallout* Really??? Fallout?
Personally I think it is an overreaction. I can understand people in areas of Japan being concerned about it, but in the US?

can't help that, it's what's happening. some sergeant came in and ordered a case of the liquid kelp because he said he was extremely concerned and suggested to my mother to take some as well. ????

Amy iodine is used to flood the thyroid so it doesn't suck up radioactive iodine. If people are rushing to grab some at your mom's store then they're acting pretty crazy. *edited to add* imo ;)

Lisa- I have a question. People are rushing my mom's health food store for liquid kelp and potassium..iodide? i think it is???? they're saying it helps prevent cancer due to nuclear affects. Are people seriously over reacting? I mean, THAT many people coming in and wiping them out kinda creeped me out.
