So, I couldn't sleep.. Big shocker. So I got on here to check my email and I saw this on Yahoo.

Apparently they are redesigning the dollar bill! And they have different designs, they are vertical instead of horizontal, etc..

Thoughts?

He didn't design the bill, Christina. And paper bills always have political figures on them - why not Obama? He's the first non-white President, kind of a landmark figure in American politics.

Otherwise, I think they look kinda fun. If its going to cost a fortune to re-do all the currency, I don't really see the point, but still, fun.

Well, I like the idea of a face that doesn't belong to an old white guy.

oooo...I like all of them...it seems a little silly to do this again tho, when we just changed all of our money over the last few years...

I fully agree with you. Though, as a Canadian, my opinion about proposed artwork for your money doesn't mean much ;-)

Seriously though, he does deserve to be on a bill. He's now a huge part of our history and signifies a great change in our nation.

Yup, scrounging around for coffee change I realize I have enough to go to the movies & buy a book.

@ Dana - hahahahaha... you do realize having a $3 Obama bill would make some people's heads explode?

Holy cow, people.. I'm going to have to come back and read all those posts. The Roxicet they gave me yesterday at the ER makes me too sleepy to comprehend half of what's being said.

But.. Continue :) I'm sure it will make for one hell of a read!

Since the canucks brought up our loonie and toonie stuff....

I recently went through our "change" jar. It's where we toss all our change at the end of each day. I counted it all, we have $164.62

Now if we didn't have loonies and toonies, that jar wouldn't be anywhere near that.

True, Laura! You think you're broke, and then you count the change in your purse and in your car's ashtray, and realize that you've got like, $16 in there!

AW MAN...always, just when I think I'm totally broke, I reach into the bottom of my purse and find $20...it's AWESOME...I dare you to find me one Canadian who doesn't love the loonies and toonies hiding in the bottom of purses ♥

We'd better not get rid of the dollar bill! I love it! I also think that President Obama would be great on the dollar bill. They should put a little picture of him on all the bills, drive people crazy. I'd love it. ;) Maybe they could come up with a 3 dollar bill with his picture on it, that would be some Change. :)

Oh and I agree, Petra, totally love the names you guys have. It fits since you're all a bunch of loon's. ;)

I'm not a big fan of change.

They better never get rid of the $1 bill. What would I use to bribe/pay my girls? ;)

Our money is the best because it has the queen on it!! hehehe.
Although I can't really remember what a £20 note looks like any more :(
I think different colours for different amounts is a REALLY good idea, just makes it easier.
I quite like the idea of having $1 in a note form tho, if they did that here, I'd look like I had LOADS of money when I didn't! Actually, I'd rather they did a note for 1p......then I really WOULD look rich! :)

I like the design but it would definately take some getting used to. I also like the newer colored bills we currently have. When you deal with them daily, it's not difficult to tell the bills apart by a glance. I would suspect that even if these new designs get approved, it will be awhile before we ever actually see them come out. I'm sure they are always looking for ways to improve the currency but everything takes time. If the security features on them are worth the cost to offset printing all new bills, I'm all for it. If it's more to "glam" them up, not so much. But I can't help but assume, that would already be considered.

[deleted account]

The designs are kind of cool. How about the size of the money? Would we all have to buy new wallets?

As far as the $1 bill goes, I like having it. When I was in Canada, I wasted so much money spending those loonies and toonies, because they were "just change." It's harder to part with an actual bill.

Krista, I know it was a submitted design and not Obama's own- I'm not a retard.

Also, I never said he should wait until he's dead to APPROVE the design. I said that if it is approved BEFORE he's dead, and while he's still in office, that would be conceited of him. That comment that you posted about was taken out of context. He should wait until he's dead to get his turn, NOT meaning he should wait until he's dead to APPROVE it, but MEANING he shouldn't approve while he's alive and in office. Of course others will have to approve it if he's dead, that's not the point that's why I didn't elaborate on it. I'm going to go take yet another dose of Advil and try to rest.

Christina, usually they do have someone with them to help but not always. my store was located near a home for blind people, and there were a couple blind gentlemen who had no one so they always needed one of our baggers to help them with shopping (whoever we could spare were sent to help). as far as i know they never encountered any issue with any of our staff, but plenty of the people i worked with, i wouldn't trust as far as i could throw them :-/

Christina:

1. That dollar bill design was not Obama's idea. It was a submitted idea. I highly doubt that they'll be replacing Washington on the bill.
2. You DO realize that you just said that in order to not appear full of himself, Obama should wait until he is dead before he approves a bill with his own face on it? I know some people think he's the anti-christ, but I haven't heard that he has the powers to legislate from beyond the grave...

The rest of them aren't too bad, Laura.

Jennifer Laur, I used to be a cashier(/office feast) at a grocery store before I had my son, too. Most of the blind people that came through, though, had a trusted person shopping with them so they knew what groceries they were buying ;)

Of course you would, JuLeah. That's nice.. But why can't he wait 'til he's dead like the rest of them? That shows he is full of himself.

Yeah, the Braille is pretty awesome, really. And I do like that our bills are very easily distinguishable from each other by colour. Yes, the US ones have colour too, but it's so subtle as to be barely noticeable.

i think its a great idea to redesign our money...as long as they are smart enough to make each bill distinguishable for blind people. i was a cashier at a grocery store before i had my son, and it makes me uncomfortable that blind people have to rely on the honesty of the cashier to give them proper change.

Again, Laura.. The 50's look like they have had a bath in Hawaiian Punch. Though I do like the fact that it has Braille.. Something the US should think about doing.

No offense, Petra.. I just don't think that's so cute.

um...if they are different colours, they look like they went through a washing mashine with a tie dye t-shirt and got colours splashed on a little by accident lol, and I just think with the coins is that they did a cost/benefit analysis and found that the rate that ones and twos are used, the paper wore out very quickly and constantly had to be replaced, where metal coins could last almost forever (assuming no teenagers leave them sitting on railroads gqtm)

In case some of you haven't noticed.. The $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills are different colors. It's the $1's and $2's that aren't. They have said before (when they changed the 5's, 10's, 20's and 50's that they were going to change the others.. In time).

And Laura, I really don't see what the big deal is having $1 bills.. Apparently Americans don't have a problem with it, or else people would have been up in arms about it a long time ago.

Your money would look more like ours then! Personally, American money kind of drives me nuts. I like being able to tell what I'm pulling out of my wallet just by the color, rather than having to look at the number on the bill!

[deleted account]

I remember visiting New Zealand when I was 16 and I thought their money was WAY cooler than ours! lol... I am all for the changes (I love the first propsed design!). I think it will make our currency stronger (in the idea that it will be harder to forge).

Isobel - posted on 09/19/2010

and our bills are WAY cooler than the US too ;) and harder to forge as well. I never seem to feel like I know how much money I have when I'm in the States...a big wad of cash could just as easily be fifteen dollars as a thousand...argh

you guys'll never have colours

I think it's silly that you still have a one dollar bill...I think you're the last country left.

C. - posted on 09/19/2010

The $1 bills are still easy to forge.. But all they have to do to help with that is the same thing they've done with higher currency.. Make it out of a different paper and put a security strip in it that you can see when it's held up to the light. That would cost less than redesigning everything.

[deleted account]

Dollar bills are quite basic at the moment compared to other currencey which makes them easy to forge. I've got an British 20 pound note in my purse and it puts the dollar bill to shame (sorry for being a currency snob). I'm also a bit slow sometimes and the idea of a $20 bill being so similar to a $1 bill doesn't sit well with me when I'm not on top form. If a new design can prevent forgery and make it easier for everyone, then it's a good idea. If it's just to give it a new look then I say they should stick with tradition.

I also think it's a good thing to have Obama on it. Whether or not you agree with his politics, the fact is that he made history. I think that's something worth commemorating.

I agree, Katherine.

Petra, if you notice.. Our money (not just paper money, but coins as well) has PAST presidents who have since passed away.. They didn't have their face on the currency until after they died.

And no, Obama didn't design it, but I think if it gets passed, it's rather conceited of him to be all for it.

I agree that since we changed our currency designs in the last few years, they definitely shouldn't change it again. It will cost WAY too much money to do that. Money that we still do no have.

I saw this on yahoo too lol. I was bored and almost posted it. If we redesign that we should redesign everything. I don't think it's neccessary, I thought they were doing away with the dollar bill anyways. I definitely don't think Obama should be on it.

Personally, and I just have to say this.. I HATE the $1 design. I just think it's a little conceited of our President to have his face on the new money (if it even gets passed). Maybe that's just me?
