WOMEN boxers are set to pack a punch at the 2012 London Olympics with a crucial International Olympic Committee vote tonight expected to usher in the controversial sport.

Rugby sevens and golf, with personal lobbying from global superstar Tiger Woods, also are fancied to win recommendation for inclusion in the 2016 Games from the IOC's executive board when they meet in Berlin.

Both fit with the IOC's eagerness to push female representation at the Olympics closer to 50-50 with men.

Boxing equally is keen to ditch its mantle as the only exclusively male event at summer Olympics with a proposal that 40 female boxers compete in London across five weight divisions.

It is a highly emotional debate. Women pour passion, courage and training into boxing but there is significant unease about women trying to belt the daylights out of each other.

Much of that unease is from males and, significantly, 14 of the 15 votes on the IOC's executive board are male. Six are in their progressive 70s. Equality for the sexes might yet hit a hurdle.

I think A woman should have every right to choose to fight and it should be not only legal to compete ( it isnt in a few countries ) but represented in the olympics .

I also want to add that there is a lot of technicality and strategy that goes into boxing , it isnt some mindless sport where people just "beat the shit " out of each other , yes it is aggressive and violent BUT a lot of it mental too .

As a life long, committed pacifist, I would rather not see anyone boxing. Spectator sports which which encourage an audience to scream at the competitors to give each other a good beating (however skilled they may be in doing so) brings out the worst in humanity IMO.

Having said that, if boxing is to remain legal, I see no reason why one particular group of people should be excluded from it based on something as arbitrary as gender. I find it equally distasteful whoever the competitors might be.

A woman should have just as much right to choose a career path as a man. I don't understand why people still feel that they get an opinion on what others do with their bodies if it isn't hurting a third party.

I used to date a guy who did MMA. It was a lot of fun to train with him and I learned a lot of good self defense. Although, had he gone full out on me, I would have been in severe pain. But he had years of training and I didn't. You would be amazed at the amount of technique fighters have to have.

It was also really fun to learn how to make a grown man "dance" by using two fingers :) Men don't see that coming! haha

I LOVED boxing. I was in it for 4 years when i was a teen. I didn't get to fight very often though because not many girls were in it. The guys that were in my weight range didn't want to fight me either..A lot of would say they were going easy on me before the fight...then i would win so it took the fun out of it a bit..

I think there is absolutely a place for women in boxing. And it pisses me off to no end that the IOC is such a bunch of dinosaurs. They don't even allow the women to compete in ski jumping, ferchrissakes!

Why the heck not? We can throw a left hook, and take those arm bars, just as good as any man out there, in fact, they could do it better than some men. Its disgusting how women are still being viewed as the weaker sex and still don't have equal rights across the board as men do.

Of course, why not? I dont' think much of the intelligence of people who's sport is to beat the brains out of the other thus reducing their intellecte even more but hey, it's not my body.

I can't say I'd want to watch woman's boxing, but I can't see a reason why there wouldn't be a place for them. If two women want to beat the shit outta each other for sport, who are we to stop them? lol

if a woman wants to fight then let her. i can't see it really taking off in the UK there are women boxing clubs here but there is never a womans fight on the tv. We do have some really good women boxers here but they are never promoted in the same manor as a mans match. I don't think a woman should be stopped because of her sex!
