How much do you think a 6 month old should be sleeping during the day?

My brother in laws ex girlfriend just came back to live with us again. Well they have a 6 month old and he gets up anywhere between 6 and 7 in the morning, well she said all during the day he will get up play and eat for 2 hours and then go back to sleep for an hour sometimes a little more or a little less, then he will do that all day. Do you think that he is getting too much sleep?

A 6 month old should be having at least 2 sleep a day anywhere from 1-3 hrs in length. I have a 6 month old and he has 2 sometimes 3 sleeps a day. He has one in the morning at about 8:30 for 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. He has another sleep at about 12:30 for 1 1/2 to 2 hrs sometimes a little longer but never more then 3 hrs. and somtimes if his sleeps have only been short he will have a 40 min power nap at about 4. He goes to bed between 7 and 8pm and sleeps till 5 or 6 am.
All babies are different. You can't say they are having too much sleep. If there bodies need the sleep there is not much you can do about it. He sounds perfect to me. And also remember they grow in there sleep.

A 6 month old should be napping every few hours, so this baby sounds like he's right where he should be. I'm pretty sure my daughter was still on 3 naps a day at that age, and sleeping 12hrs at night.

i dont think thats "too much sleep" as long as the baby is going too bed for the night at a decent time, then i wouldnt be concerned about the naps during the day yet.

My daughter took three 45min-1hr naps at that age.

I don't think there's such a thing as "too much sleep" for a baby. lol My daughter refused to go to sleep if she wasn't tired enough. :P

Babies can't sleep too much as long as when they're awake they are alert and active.
My 6 month old takes about 4 naps a day each one being about an hour long.
There's such a variable of normal for babies. Look at the baby, not at the numbers.

I agree with Sherri there's no way to make a baby who isn't tired go to sleep. If they were getting too much sleep they'd be up at 3am wanting to party.

No my kids both do that. Well Logan is older now but until he was 1 he napped every 2 hours and slept all night.

I agree. Even with my 2.5 yo when she needs a nap I let her have one. She needs sleep, I'm not going to deprive her.

My girls were scheduled and had 3 (I think? Forgive me.. It's been a LONG time) naps at this age. Two of the naps would be long and then a 'catnap' in early evening. They were sleeping about 12 hours/night w/ one or two wakings. My son was a catnapper until he only had one nap/day... and was sleeping 10-11 hours at night w/ 2-5 wakings (yes, I have no clue how I survived him). Every kid is different and as long as he's having some alert periods during the day and is growing and thriving... I'd never worry about 'too much' sleep.

I wouldn't worry about a baby getting too much sleep, I'd more worry about too little sleep. (not in this case, just in general) The baby must just be growing really fast right now and needs lots of shut-eye.

Babies don't get too much sleep. They are growing exponentially and that takes energy. Just think about your first day at a new job. Do you remember how tired you were after that first day. Every day is a first for a 6 moth old in all ways. Sleep in when your brain puts info where it needs to go for the next time.
