This might sound really odd but when I have trouble sleeping and it is not due to something I can pinpoint (event in my life, food I ate, etc)... it's time for me to see my chiropractor! I rarely have trouble going back to sleep now. I find that getting my spine readjusted really helps me. I had neck problems that made it very difficult for me to ever be rested. With a follow up of a few months, I sleep like a rock.

My chiro told me that some adjustment can help lessen the symptoms of sleep apnea... Maybe that could help some of you.

Usually, if I can't get to the chiro and can't sleep I go sit down in the living room and read a bit or I wake my hubby up for some fun... then I can sleep happily hahaha

I was just diagnosed with a type of sleep apnea and am in the process of getting a CPAP machine. It's AMAZING!

Did you know that there are MANY different forms of sleep apnea. I'm not sure where you live but you should get tested! In Canada, it was free for me to get tested!

Dana I think you the better right - I was going to suggest we all drink our problems away but seeing your doctor with this problem is a very good idea. Just for the debating moms in South Africa that is part of this chat... this "sleep analyses" will set you back round R5000. I think thinking about that will disturb my sleep for tonight, LOL all the the wine money I will have to save :) You have no excuse to suffer if help is for free!

Yeah I disturb my hubby as well when I wake up, geez these light sleepers are annoying lol.

A Thanks Toni, I have tried that a few times already. First I ended up disturbing my husband who is an extremely light sleeper and when I snuck off to other rooms to make lists - when I look again it's getting light outside and then by 12 I am so tired I am dragging my feet through the day. The best for me is also "winding down" instead of pass collapse from exhaustion . WHat works best is to just lie dead still not to disturb anyone and hopefully fall asleep. I do then most nights, but occasionally the "o bugger it getting light and I'm going to be stuffed" scenario plays out. What ever happened to "have a glass of warm milk my dear...?" :)

Doreen really daft idea but have you tried writing down in a list what is on your mind when you wake up, so you don't have to think about it. I know it works for some people, maybe worth a try if you haven't already.

YES I do actually!!! Lights on for me is between 2-3 a.m. Then I lie in bed and stress about all the things I need to remember tomorrow, the things you haven't done, people I should ring, the things you still should do, the future of the country and the economy, etc. etc. I don't know what it is, but I too am not one just to take medication I try and figure out rather what is bothering me. Long story short ask the Doctor and "she" recommended I take a very light anti-depressant an hour before I go to sleep, so my mind can shut down for about a month to restore my sleeping patterns. I didn't take it because medication normally has a reverse effect on me, but I do find after I have had 2 glasses of wine occassionally, I wake up feeling super rested :) I suggest have a talk with you doctor. Else, we all might meet at the AA for our future chats :)

I have problems sleeping sometimes and often lie in bed listening to my hubby sleeping. I like Sharon will not use meds to help, although I do find that doing relaxing things before bed helps, have a bath, listen to chill out music and avoid things which stimulate me, so things like reading books just before bed (because when I put the book down I replay the scenarios and guess what may happen in the next chapter etc), and reduce coffee and alcohol intake - studies have found that although alcohol can make you sleepy it also disturbs your sleep and gives you less beneficial sleep.

I've had sleep issues my whole life. It takes me forever to actually fall asleep without any kind of sleep aid. And then sadly yes, many times I do wake up and I have a difficult time gettin gback to sleep. I refuse to take prescription sleep aids, but I do use OTC. Not every night though. My mind races, I can;t unwind, I toss & turn, and sometimes even get up to roam teh house. I'll read or watch TV, but still have difficulties. I should drink more wine with dinner becasue it does make me more sleepy!
