I think it's impossible for an atheist to explain why they are an atheist without offending people who believe in God.

Just by explaining our viewpoint, and opinion the obvious reaction of believers is to take that viewpoint and to say "obviously if you think THAT you must think that I'M stupid and delusional" even when we've said nothing of the sort.

I can stand here all day and explain why I don't believe in god, why I think it's a myth, how it is used to control and manipulate the masses into accepting being treated poorly...and you, in turn, will say "I am not being manipulated and why do you think I am stupid enough to believe in a "myth"".

See how that happens?

It's true that many of us see organized religion as a great evil of the world...that doesn't mean we think all the people who believe in it are bad people.

Hi all!

I just want to say thanks to everyone for sticking up for DM's.
Obviously, being a debate group, we're not all going to agree, and the topics posted are up for debate......from ALL angles.

I truly hope no-one has been offended here in DM's, but as I said, as a debate group it's it can get heated, but it's the topic at hand we're debating, NOT the individual.

I will be locking this thread, as I don't think it's fair to bring threads from other communities into this community. I appreciate the sentiment though!

Thanks!

I think this is one of those things that goes both ways; there are individuals in both camps that make statements or generalizations about each other that are intentionally judgmental, derogatory, or inflammatory. There are also those who can have disagreements about faith while still being courteous and respectful. The problem is, we all tend to take note of the comments that are more controversial, or those that offend us, and then operate on the assumption that all members of that "group" think, feel, believe, or act the same way.

Juliane, I'm a long-standing, active member of DM. I hold some fairly liberal views that are outside of box of more traditional, fundamental Christians, even though I am Catholic. I abhor those Christians that preach hate and intolerance in the name of God.

That being said, I don't know that it's totally off base to assert that there have been more than a few posts on here that have been intolerant and judgmental of those who believe in God. I really think, if pushed, we could find examples of both "sides" making statements that were rather unkind or uncalled for.

Well, I have heard talk of being stupid and delusional for my beliefs. That's kind of bashing. NOT everyone does that and it's not right to lump all of one group together, but that's kind of how I feel about this post right here too. Especially since I've responded to both posts.

I'll tell you.... sometimes being Switzerland is kind of stressful. lol

I just want to completely echo Laura's statement. She stated very eloquently exactly what I was thinking but could not say so well.

I also would like to add that being a debating community, all viewpoints are up for discussion. No one should expect to come in here and not have their ideas, beliefs and viewpoints challenged. That's what this community is all about. When religion enters into the discussion, which is often the case, it is treated equally as just another topic of debate. If you find it offensive that your beliefs are being challenged and opposed, this is very likely the wrong place to hang out.

And you are very unlikely to get a warm welcome if you come here simply to proselytize.

Yes, I agree with that aspect. People shouldn't confuse debating with disrespecting.
Although in their defense I have seen (several times) people stating, I don't believe in God but if you want to believe in fairy tales then feel free...
I think posts like that are only going to make people angry and put them on the defensive so they're not going to see that others aren't being as rude.

Like I said, there's shitty people on both sides. ;)

ah ha! You're right, it is less than kosher. I posted but I didn't go off. Just defended DM and said we're not all bad. Myself included respects the opinions of christian's in religious debates but not to confuse debating with disrepecting..... more or less.

But yeah, I don't agree with the tit for tat.

It would be one thing if a thread was started as a debatable topic of "Are we really rude to Christians?" or something along those lines. And Julianne then proceeded to tell everyone that she was perusing CoM and came across a thread stating.... And then everyone debated that.

It's another thing to start a thread with the title of "so we're the talk of the christians now." and then just posting the link.
And of course if you follow the link you can find that they had to lock their thread and remove posts. But, you can see Julianne's thread where she's "going off" on them.

I just find it tacky and it gives other members of DM a bad name.

So what is the point of starting this thread? All it does IMO is prove them right. There's good people and bad people on both sides.

I think a lot of the aminosity on the part of athiests and agnostics towards Christianity stem from it being constantly shoved down our throats in RL.... affecting human rights like in the example of same sex marriages. Being looked down on by Christian elitists, I'm sure all of us 'non-believers' have experienced that in our life time. The implications or outright accusations of being considered ignorant, degenerate heretics. The past/present persecutions we've experienced at the hands of Christianity.

Awww Teresa... caught in the middle.

My opinion is neither side should be over stepping boundries. But I refuse to be lumped into a group where I'm the bad guy by association. I am an agnostic, sometimes athiest. ;) I am geniunely curious about the Christian women on DM's point of view because for the first time in my life... I've met Christians who's views I can completely respect. I've come to the realization I have more issues with organized religion than Christianity itself.

So if anything DM has made me softer towards Christians and maybe turned me a little more agnostic. :)

[deleted account]

I figured the women of DM have a right to know about the thread.
I never seen anyone bashing Christians on DM honestly. I have seen posts against atheists...apparently atheists cant love because we don't know god.

[deleted account]

It makes me feel bad when a group of people lump everyone into the same god hating christian bashing group....I have NEVER bashed a christian! My family are christian..my friends are christian, they respect my choice and i respect theirs. Teresa...you read the threads..you participated in the debates..You seen that its not religion bashing debates! Its discussions about rights to religion or lack of, tolerance and acceptance

[deleted account]

This post and the post on the Christian mom's page are both making me feel bad. :(

And that's all I have to add.

[deleted account]

That is what most of the women in here say! Its not the religion its the lack of tolerance....while preaching tolerance! I have NEVER seen any DM person actually badmouth christians or god...any religion for that matter...its ridiculous.

I had no idea that I was "the enemy". Silly me, I'm just all for loving people as they are. The only thing I can't tolerate is lack of tolerance. You know what really pissed me off? One of these chicks on the gay thread was like "There are even some "Christians" who allow gays to marry." Wow - mega judgment. I guess my family doesn't follow Christ in the right way?

My grandpa always said, dont worry when people are talking about you, worry when they stop talking about you. :0)

Though the topic is very ironic. I guess no one taught them that freedom of religion also means freedom of no religion.
