Do you use Q-tips/ cotton swabs to clean out your ear wax?

I do, my mom always used qtips in our ears as kids and if I don't for a while my ear gets itchy really bad. Only problem is in the winter my ears get very very cold and I get headaches easily in the cold wind because I have no wax in my ears to protect them. But I couldn't stop if I wanted to! It feels way too good to clean out my ears.

not with my kids because I feel th'ey're so small and I can't feel when I'm just shoving something further in. My daughter seems to get major wax build up..a few months ago she was up screaming and couldnt sleep for like 2 hrs..now being four this was obviously not normal...finally i invited her to cuddle where she admitted that it was because her ear hurt. I took her to the doctors after a few days of the same complaints and they flushed her ear.
A few weeks ago now she's five, her wax built up again, and a HUGE ball managed to push itself out and she no long complained about (this recent) pain.

I always clean my ears out and have no problems with them AND I use the Johnson's saftey swabs (the baby q-tips with the big bulbs on them) on my 13 month old daughter, I have since she was a few weeks old and the doctor always says her ears look GREAT! She's never had an ear infection either, which I'm sure cleaning her ears has nothing to do with but still! lol We have had no problems with it, and she loves it! :)

I use a facecloth with a bit of oil and wrap it around my pinky. I dont use qtips on myself or gabby. i did use them myself until i found out how bad it was.

You can get the stuff you spray into your ear but I don't know if there is one suitable for kids

Yep. Don't care if I "pack it in." That's what they say you're doing. I love how it feels too. I hate ear wax.

yep krista! :) i figured people would get a very accurate visual of what i do with my Q-tips, lmao!!

I know it's bad but there is a spot when cleaning the ear that just feels so good to get to. I try not to do it but that feeling, i just can't get enough. I never touch my childrens ears.

Nope. Years ago, a friend of mine, who's mother is a nurse, told me about another option that works if I really have the need for it. She suggests taking a properly sanitized, safety pin - the unsharp end, of course. You take it and just scrape out the visual ear wax around the opening of the ear, just like a little tongue scraper.

Now, I rarely have to do this. I just don't have that much ear wax and my ears are really sensitive from a ton of childhood infections.

However, when I see the need, that's what I do.

I didn't start it. I just copied it.... and in all fairness... I'm not sure I get it, but then... my mind isn't in the gutter enough. ;)

It depends. If they have wax hanging out and it looks miserable then I will do it but not all the time for no reason.

Yeah I do. I try not to, but sometimes it gets itchy and weird-feeling. I never touch my daughter's ears with more than a washcloth though.

Yes we use Q-tips. I don't go too deep but yes I use them every morning after my shower as does hubby and our son after his bath. My ears don't produce much wax so the Q-tip comes out clean almost always. I've never had my doctor comment that my ears are full of wax so I guess that's good. :)

No i do not and would ever do that to my kids either.I agree with the doctors. There saying it for a reason.I do not get any infections etc my sister and partner do and guess what there divils for poking there ears with Q-tips.lol.

I dry/ clean my ears after every shower if I don't it irritates me, although I try not to go in too far I do on occasion. As I know it is bad I only do my ears I will not use them on my kids.

I love the satisfaction of a good clean ear :-)

I dry my ears w/ a q-tip after every shower. I don't shove it in there or anything. I've never had any problems because of it. I am prone to mild ear infections in my right ear everytime I get a cold, but I haven't had one serious enough to be medicated since I was 17.....

Lol @ Dyan.. a "rim job" is pertty much what I do on my ears with q-tips as well, but I wont go further in than that.. I remember when I was a kid my mom used to use a dropper and put peroxide in my ears when i was lying on my side and it owuld loosen it. I do believe now they says that's a BAD idea, but oh well.. I'm pretty careful, and will only do my own like that when I do it, I wont go anywhere near my kids ears with q-tips for now, thankfully it's been a non issue, their wax seems to come out when it needs to in little waxy balls..

i clean the crannies of the outside of my ears, and i basically give the ear canal a "rim-job" with one. but i try not to stick it in my ears. :)

I've been to the dr recently and she looked in my ears and said they look good. So I'm assuming I'm not pushing it in further......wouldn't the dr see it if I had wax shoved in there?

I use them to clean the nooks and crannies of the outer part of my ear, now.

I used to clean in the canal with a swab, and it DOES feel good to clean the wax out, but I went just recently to an ear, nose, throat specialist for snoring, and while I was there, he took a look in my ears. Anyway, he hauled out big black plugs of wax the size of peas!!! Basically my "cleaning" was just jamming the wax further in there.

So now to clean them, I just put in oily ear drops, let everything soften, and then suck the oil and wax out with an ear bulb. Not as satisfying, but much safer.

I haven't had an ear infection, yet :) hopefully won't but I could see why that would make you stop.

I use to, but after a few ear infections caused by forcing the wax futher into my ear, I stopped. I had to get my ears drained twice at the doctor's.

I now use cotton balls to just wipe the outer part of the ear cannal.
