A new Canadian speed deterrant has questions raised. Would it condition people to just run right over real kids? I think it's fantastic personally. The concept does worry me that younger generations may ignore true children for optical illusions though. What do you think?

Holy crap this is a bad idea... People might start ignoring kids and putting the onus onto pedestrians is not going to work. What about the drivers who are unaware of Patty and her cohorts, they could totally shit themselves and slam on the brakes, veer out of traffic, etc. and cause more accidents, not to mention lawsuits. Dumb.

Yep, that's who it is. Teenager blowing stop signs and speeding. Jerks.

In the neighbourhood I used to live in, in front of the school, we had a cop come out and hit people with radars and hand out tickets all day every day for two weeks before school started...so once the kids were there, people had slowed down :)

They only have one on our street (the sign and 2 planters) but our street is quite short, and we have a park on the end of it. I mostly see these put around school areas and parks to slow people down, because before that we had teenagers speeding down the street at almost 70 km/hr because they could - stupid kids!

@ Tara, you're right it probably will draw attention and cause problems. From a psychological standpoint will it condition people to be more cautious or desensitize them? I'msure (I hope) they did loads of studies before they implemented this.

We have speeding problems in my sub that they HAVE to get under control. @ Caitlyn I really like the idea of the sign and the 2 big concrete planters. How many do they have?

I think it's a waste of money and time. I think there will be a certain amount of desensitization as a result of seeing the same image in the same place every time someone passes by.
I also think it will draw more traffic to the area in the initial months simply due to curiosity. The speed bump of the future!!
"Come one come all, watch Pavement Patty appear and then drive right over her, you can do this again and again at no charge!"
Stupid all around in my opinion.

We have little cardboard cutouts in some school crosswalks here and they sure make me slow down, even after 6 years of living in this city, I still slow down to make sure. I've never heard of anybody hitting one.

I'd worry about people starting to ignore it. I like what they did on our street. They put a sign in the middle of the road and 2 big heavy concrete planters on either side that make people slow down so they don't scrape up against the planter or knock down the sign. It's either that or scratch the heck out of your car. That's the most effective thing i've seen around here, speed bumps don't work too well..
