SS Card and Birth Certificate

[deleted account] ( 10 moms have responded )

My daughter was born January 6, and the nurses told me I should expect her social security card in the mail in four to six weeks, but that I would have to fill out some form to get her birth certificate. Funnily enough, I haven't gotten her card yet and I may be wrong but I think the form needed her SSN, and in order to get her SS card I need her birth certificate.

So I am confused and not sure what to do or who to call. I've been checking my mail pretty diligently over the last couple weeks and her card hasn't shown up. Then again, maybe the nurses were wrong or I misheard them and I am supposed to *wait four to six weeks before I can apply for these things. This is very possible, in which case I can figure out what to do, I think. But no one ever told me about this stuff. I was under the impression from the way my parents talked that I would get Julie's birth certificate from the hospital and her SS card in the mail, but that obviously didn't happen, haha...

I feel like I've messed up somewhere, and that really sucks. Any help on the issue?

Our 3 year old daughter's SS card never came to us - we had to go get it when she was 3 months old from the SS office so we could file our taxes. Our 2 year-old's card came within 2 weeks. They were born in different counties, so that may be the reason for the time difference though...

All our birth certificate forms were taken care of at the hospital. After 8 weeks I went the the county records office and requested a copy. All i needed to get certified copies was my ID and to fill out the paperwork they provided (I can't remember if they asked for a SS# though). If they ask for the number you can say you don't know it and it should be fine - getting a SS# isn't required by law, so there are some people that don't have one (of course, they can't collect SS or do other stuff - it's easier to just get the stupid number...)

I'm straining my brain because it's been 4+ years since dealing with any of this. The paperwork for the SS card was submitted from the hospital. It took a bit, but it came in the mail. I had to wait 6 weeks before applying for the birth certificate to make sure there was time for the SS number to be generated. The hospital should have given you a paper that acts as a record of birth until you get those other things. Without dragging out baby books to double check, it had the footprints, name of child, parents, date and time of birth on it.

There should be a social security office where you live. I'd call them, let them know when baby was born, that you haven't recieved SS card yet and they should be able to direct you to the right place.

My hospital files all of the paper work for the birth certificate for you, the fee is just so you can obtain a copy of it. I also filled out all paper work for SS card while at the hospital and they send it all in. So if that's the case with yours you should get it in the mail unless your address is wrong in the info you gave them I would still try to call the SS office since it has been more than 6 weeks. Good luck

i did see something in my searches for this that some places require you to wait 3-4 weeks to file the paperwork for the birth certificate, why? i don't know, lol. so i'm gathering that since you havn't done that yet, that's why the ssc isn't there yet. there would have to be record of the birth to have a social security number. send in that paperwork, with the fee!! :)

It could be that you have to wait 6 weeks. I'm sorry I don't remember for sure, but I do remember the part about the SS card.

ugh, the nurses said not to bother filing for a birth certificate for six weeks :( i'm beginning to think someone gave me the wrong information at the hospital Dx

The birth certificate takes quite a while. I remember wondering where my boys birth certificates were and calling around to find out, but they take their time.

I remember getting both my boys SS cards in the mail naturally, meaning we didn't have to fill out any forms for that. It came after the birth certificate though because they file it there using the information given for the birth certificate. At least this is the way it was for me where I am.

we didn't pay any kind of fee for the certificate so i know i'll have to send in something for it, but i'm pretty sure we were told her SS card would come in the mail. i'm trying to find the number to call for my state but it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. i'm hoping her card didn't get lost in the mail. that would not be good :(

here, we filled out the forms and paid the fee at the hospital and it was all sent to us in the mail. did you pay a fee for the certificate at the hospital?
if you did, i would suggest calling the vital records offices and ss office and see where the hell they are!

For us SS card will come in the mail, if it hasn't I would call the SS office to see if they got the app from the hospital. We got a sheet from the hospital to mail in to get the Birth certificate or we can go to the court house to get it and we have to pay $15 for it. Good luck I really hope it didn't get lost in the mail.
