Sympathetic or do they deserve it?

3 Teens were killed 2 nights ago on the train tracks while they spray painted graffiti tags. The graffiti artist community is in mourning, but my husband says they desrved it, and good riddance to bad rubbish.

I don't necessarily think they deserved what happened, I don't personally know the kids, but I do HATE how prevalent graffiti is in our communitites, and I think it's an eyesore and there should be stiffer penalties, but to say they deserved what they had coming is a little too cold for my liking..

What do you think? here is the story.

Honestly? I feel for the train driver. No, I don't believe the kids deserved it, and I think these are issues that need to be addressed. But what about that poor train drive that could see it going to happen but couldn't stop it from happening through absolutely no fault of his own. He has to live with that. Fault or not, he still has to live with it.

Most teenagers aren't known for their incredibly good judgement. It's sad that something like tagging should end up in such a horrible death. The walls/trains can be painted over; they can't be brought back to life. So sad.

cathy, krista, and cassie said it perfectly.

they definitely did not deserve death for vandalism but what did they think would happen when they decided to play on train tracks? duh.

well...as soon as your husband gets out and votes for capital punishment for graffiti and everything deemed worse...I'll take him seriously.

Anyone who gets hit by a train deserves it. Who doesn't see a train coming? They're a) playing on the tracks b) vandalising trains c) there is no good reason why they are doing either of those things.

The train driver did see them, but not soon enough, it was dark and it was a high speed passenger train. He pulled the emergency break, but couldn't stop in time...

I don't think they deserved it - I think that's pretty harsh. But I do think they got what was coming to them. That probably sounds like the same thing, but in my mind it's different. :) They were doing something stupid and it is their own fault they were killed. It's still sad and tragic for the family, but I do hope the train driver isn't blamed for it.

It was their stupidity that got them killed (as can be the result of a whole host of stupid actions) and along with everyone else, I dont believe tagging/graffitti is a death penalty crime, I find it extremely sad that somehow three teens failed to escape an oncoming train... Perhaps they're now legend or lesson for other tagging teens...

not to make light of a very sad situation (well maybe just a little) but this is the epitome of natural consequences. Play on train tracks, get hit by a train. Parenting technique to the extreme.

They didn't deserve death by train for damaging property. Whether or not it looks good is totally subjective. And either way, it's illegal and apparently dangerous. The parents and the staff are the ones who I think about with sadness in my heart. They will have to remember this day forever.
But deserving death for vandalism? Seems just a wee bit harsh to me.

I hate graffiti too, but saying 3 teens deserved to get killed for it is sick! :(

I also think they were stupid to be on the tracks and totally feel for the driver and the parents.

I don't think they deserved to die for graffiti but I do think it was dumb to be playing around in the dark on a railway track.

"Graffiti art is impressive and gorgeous. Tagging is the human equivalent of a dog pissing on a fire hydrant."

I agree. Though there are a few around here who "tag" but it does look nice. It does not mean I like that they are doing it. There are plenty of businesses, around here anyway, that will (and have) pay for a real graffiti artist to do his/her work on their building.

Teenagers and other young adults can do some amazing things. It still does not make it right just because it looks nice. If they want to be taking seriously, find the businesses that are willing to pay for you to "tag" on their building.

I do think stiffer punishments need to be implemented. They damage property, both city and private!

To say they deserve to die though? That's pretty harsh.

I don't think they deserved it really, I don't even really care that they were spraying graffiti, I just think they were bloody stupid to do it on a railway track!!!

It's really sad. I feel for the parents and the train driver.

Death for vandalism is a bit excessive. But honestly - to not post a look out while tagging trains in a rail yard? Their deaths were a bit of chlorox in the gene pool.

I hate vandalism. But really I feel for the parents. How horrible.

Well, I don't think they "deserved" to die, but what do you think is going to happen if you hang out on active train tracks?!? I feel for the survivors who now have to deal with everything thanks to the kids stupidity.

As far as I heard, the train drivers are getting counselling by the company they work for and are also going to group meetings with other train drivers that have been through the same thing.

I'm glad it's not just me that feels a bit bad for the parents. It's one thing to hate what these kids did, but it's another thing to have no sympathy for the end results, and say they were deserved. It's not so much a heat fo the moment thing either I think he said it yesterday and the same thing today. It acutally made me feel kind of pissed off at him that he felt this way! I told him to shut up, I didn't want to hear him go on like that...

I'm not a fan of taggers, and do wish that they'd bring back the public stocks so that we could shame them and throw rotten tomatoes at them. But do I think that being a young, impulsive idiot is a crime punishable by DEATH? Uh, no.

We as parents can raise our children well and have them grow to be teens etc and get involed in the wrong crowds.I dont think anyone deserves to die.As parents we know life is precious and i feel that not just about my two children but all children, all life.

I dont like vandals etc but nobody ever deserves to die.No mother or father should have to bury there child, yes what they did was wrong& foolish to be on the dangerous tracks but to say the deserve dying for what they were doing.Sorry i dont agree either.I think it was said in the heat of the moment am i right.I know we all have an opinion but just think if one of those children were ours how devastating it would be to lose our child and to know others think the deserved it, for there foolish young thinking.
