So i watched the film "The Box" last night, and thought i would post the dilemma for you guys!
Basically, the couple in the film get the chance to have a million dollars if they press a button in a box. The catch is, someone, somewhere, who they don't know will die as a result.

I won't give away the whole film.......but based on that, would you press the button????

OOh i will so much backlash for this but in my real life situation.....if someone knocked on my door today and asked me to do it, I would push the button...I have no morals i guess, as it would mean I could afford the best diagnosing tests for a kidney for my 18mth son on dialysis and hell yeah I would buy a kidney for him if it meant he could live a normal life and get to do everything that a normal child does. But I would probably die of the guilt for killing an innocent person.

Speaking of the Butterfly Effect......that is another awesome film!! EVERYONE should watch the Butterfly Effect......right now! Go on.....NOW!!!!! hahaha :)

I think Cathy has it spot on really.......it always seems to be the way that if you choose to do the "wrong" thing, it will come back and bite you in the ass somehow! :)

I'm with Caitlin on this one, from what I could tell from the previews they went to the couple because they were in need of money. I could be wrong though, I haven't seen it yet but want too.

People in general like to think the best of themselves but when it comes down to it, unless we are in a certain situation we will never know for sure.

I'd like to think I wouldn't push the button but if we severely needed the money because we had hit rock bottom to take care of our kids. I probably would. My family first. I'd kill for my kids, so I'd push a button for them too.

that's why i said certified check.. either way, i like to think i'd do the right thing, but it's hard to say.. like the "my sister's keeper" thing. Unless its your sick child, how would you know how far you would go?

I didn't see the movie, and maybe i'm a very immoral person but I would seriously contemplate it.. I don`t know what i'd do.. It would take the certified check in the guys hands and me being asked this question to actually know for sure.. There are just too many variables.

Well I've already seen the movie...

But when I was watching it I was saying, "Don't press it don't press it!" My husband on the other hand was contemplating...."Well what if its someone that is about to die anyway. We all die....and on and on and on" But I don't think he would ever do it.

And it's funny that you mention blindness....go see the movie!

@Cathy S: Not if the blindness was permanent. I'm just talking about the kind of poke in the eye where you see halos around stuff for a few hours afterward.

No I wouldn't.

Was the movie good? I want to see it, but don't want to waste money if it sucks.

I wouldn't press it in hopes that it would make me 'immune' when/if somebody else pushed the button!

No way.

Although if someone offered me $10K to press a button on a box, and some random person got a poke in the eye...

If it would kill a child molester, rapist , murder genocidal maniac ect i would press it for free..

If it was just some random Joe than no i would not press it.

nope, no way. i just don't have it in me. kindof goes back to the women being forced to be in the draft for me. i cannot kill another human being unless it was selfdefense and even then i think i'd feel guilty as hell.

Nope, NO WAY!!!

...this is an age old problem in Utilitarianism...It's actually one of the major reasons that theory fails to work as a moral theory!

Just to play devils advocate........the person who died could be a murderer, or a child abuser.
I don't think i could press the button either though to be honest! I'd feel too guilty! (plus i've seen the whole film hehehehe!)

No. No money in the world could make me kill another human being. I could kill someone in defense of my son but not for something as petty as money (no matter how much I could use $1M). The fact that it's a random person somewhere in the world makes it that much worse. You could be killing another child for your own financial gain. No way.
