I heard today it will take at least 15 years to rebuild. If you are familiar with our iconic Christchurch Cathedral, you will know of the rose window (the glass stained window it's kind of iconic in its own way), that fell in to the Cathedral in June's quake.

Yep, they are aiming to have parts of the central city open up for cup week (harness racing, I think it's our version on Melbourne Cup) we have a departement store called Ballantynes-high market(We also have High Street which is boutique shopping, clothing stores you won't find in the malls such as NZ designers like Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester, World etc). they are wanting to open it up come November. I don't think I'll ever go back to the central city. I feel nervous going to any part of the central city. I'll put up a link so you can view parts of the city. I find it frustrating when they show parts of the square, they don't show the side of the square I worked in. They video from it-if that makes sense.

Wow, that's horrible. I was unaware that there were still parts where people could not return. I can't imagine living in the area or having a business there. :(

Thanks, our first one was 7.1(September 4, 4.35am), 6.3 (Feb 22nd 12.51pm) then not long after us, Japan had their earthquake/tsunami.

It is only construction/media who are allowed in the inner city cordon area. Which makes it hard for business owners to be able to get in and get stuff out. Both mine and my fellow work mates personal items are still in our lockers and doubt we will ever see them again.
The central city and parts of Sumner are now called "white zones" (basically means that the EQC haven't yet checked the building/homes). The rest of the city is made up of Green, Orange and Red zones.
We live out in the Eastern Suburbs- we are in one of the worst effected areas (from Feb's quake) and we are waiting on EQC to come out and assess our property. We almost lost our garage to the June Quake, we were just lucky that we had builders putting up support beams to our garage otherwise it would have collapsed.
June's quake was more violent then Feb (well from what we experianced), felt like our house had been picked up from its foundation and was caught in the middle of a tornado. June 13 was also my first day away from my family since Feb 22. I was just lucky I got home in time for the big one (6.3).

Oh that's terrible. I hope things work out for you as quickly as they can.

I remember when the earthquake happened. We had family in NZ near there for a wedding (my husbands cousin married a local). We weren't sure if they were still there or if they had already flown to Aus (they made a 5 week long trip of all this). It turns out they had left about 12 hours before the earthquake hit but it was unnerving. I can't imagine what you're going through living there. =(

It is scary, its extremely frustrating having to constantly shovel liquifaction out of your property after significant aftershocks. The government will hopefully tell us this week what areas of Christchurch they plan on not rebuilding. I live in one of the worst affected areas. Its deeply upsetting for the kids.
