.Is 'Together We Thrive' Memorial Service Swag Tacky?
Posted by Kim Conte on January 13, 2011 at 3:53 PM Comments (25)| Likes (14) Share17.President Obama is getting a lot of praise -- from both the left and the right -- for last night's speech honoring the Tucson shooting victims. But one aspect of the memorial service is drawing criticism: the free blue t-shirts emblazoned with the "Together We Thrive: Tucson & America" logo.

What do you think? Too much?

The "Together We Thrive" slogan was printed on several items at the event, including press passes, volunteer uniforms, signage, etc. However, some critics thought the free t-shirts that were placed on the seats in the lower sections of the arena went way too far. Amanda Carpenter, a speech writer for Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), tweeted:

I'm having a physical reaction to the T-shirts ... I'm tearing up. This feels wrong.

Others, like conservative writer Michelle Malki, were even more outraged.

President Obama used to preach that there was no “Red America” and no “Blue America,” just one America. But tonight at the memorial for the Tucson massacre victims, it will be a sea of blue as the White House unveils the “Together We Thrive” logo and slogan. Yes, the Tucson massacre is being branded.

It seems odd that free t-shirts were a part of an event as serious and somber as a memorial service. Swag of this sort should be handed out at a fun run or shot out of a cannon at a sporting event -- not commemorating a service in which people are mourning the passing of loved ones.

Yet, I'd stop short of accusing university organizers of politicizing the service. I think when it comes to the free t-shirts, their hearts were in the right place, it's just that their brains took a mini-vacation.

Do you think the "Together We Thrive" t-shirts were tacky or do you think conservatives are fishing for reasons to complain about the memorial service?

University colors are Red & Blue. Most frequently shirts from them are in blue. I'm a little surprised the print was not in red but sort of not. So if they used the stock they had on hand - they'd use blue shirts.

In general the public reacts well to slogans. Most of us feel better when we are supporting someone through their crisis. also the university is used to drumming up togetherness. this is second nature to them. when it comes to any gathering - they do this.

I gotta quit typing so fast... came back to edit "the print was NOT in red" and "most of US feel better"

"yeah i know that :) i just think it's ridiculous that she had it flown at her funeral. i hope all the other 10,000 + babies born on sept 11th get the same flag as well."

hopefully all of the babies born on September 11th live long enough that we will have forgotten all about it IMO

The reason why she had the ground zero flag hung at her grave was because she was one of the children that was born on 9/11/01, which as we know is the day the twin towers were brought down.

I think some people are making too much out of the blue shirts. Blue is a common color. I don't think it would have made a difference if it was blue or pink polka dot!

i feel the whole thing is being overdone actually. the ground zero flag was hung at the little girls funeral. not that this little girls death wasn't tragic, but why is SHE worthy of that flag? i dont' know, the whole think reeks to me, and making t-shirts off of it, is tacky and going overboard IMO.
sure it's a tragedy, and it sucks, but did anybody that died at the fort hood shootings get t-shirts or ground zero flags in their honor? IDK, the whole thing bothers me.

Michelle Malkin is a liar, though. She's claiming that Obama came up with the slogan for the event, and he didn't -- it was the university organizers who came up with it.

So I think that the t-shirts were tacky AND I think that conservatives are fishing for reasons to complain about Obama.

I had not known she was one of the faces featuered, not that it matters.....what matters is that in the end after all the tributes and all the media, the families and family still have a loss to deal with.

I'm with Nicole - but the little girl who died was one of the kids featured in the book "Faces of Hope" regarding the babies of 9/11. the author was trying to help families and kids fight the sadness of celebrating on such an infamous day by creating this book about the babies and making it all about hope.

Michelle Malkin is gross. She needs to put in her crate for awhile with a chew toy and cool down. I would not want her backing up point I'm trying to make..it would give it less value.

The t-shirts are a bit tacky.
