top baby names 2010

[deleted account] ( 74 moms have responded )

The top 10 list for baby names in 2010 was just released. How does your kid's name rank? Is it important that your children have unique names?

Eliza is gaining in popularity but still in the 200's. Jacie isn't even in the top 1,000. I like it that way. I wanted my children to have uncommon names.

Oh. And don't let the current popular trends stop you from your child whatever you want. FRIENDS didn't stop me from naming my daughter Emma/Emily - my husband did.

I had to toss him a bone - seeing as I gave the kids my last name, lol.

this is skipping back to the jayden comments earlier...i know of lots of jaydens here in aus pre brittany, i really can't imagine using it as there was a little boy here murdered in 1997 and that is all i can think of when i hear the name, it amazes me that there are so many jaydens about my sons age which means they were born when it was media fodder...i could never use sharpelle either or any name that got lots of negative media or had a sad story..

None of my girls names are in the top 20 for birth years however, my name ranked 1st & 3rd - guess it's a classic!

Cole's is 85th for the year he was born and Zach's is 61st for the year he was born. It's not that important to me that our kids have really unique names, although I didn't want them to be one of 10 in their class. Their names are popular enough that people don't look at us like we're crazy when we tell them their names, but no so popular that every second child we meet has the same name as them.

Laura - their names are Brendan, Maarken & Katriana. I'm a fan of the LONG A sound, can you tell? Well if you couldn't, thats how their names are pronounced. Minus Brendans.

I didn't realise I was using a rare alternative spelling of his name. I just wanted to make sure his name was different from BRANDON of 90210 tv show fame.

I save the WEIRD names for the middle names.

If i really liked a name, I wouldn't care if it was made famous by some tv show or movie series. I like what I like and I'm not changing my mind on the names I like for future children! :) My son's name is ranked #60

Mayah is not in the top 1000 for any year in the last 10. Miles seems to be getting increasingly more popular, but it's still not in the top 100. That's fine with me...

I have had SO many students, both male & female, with Jaydin/Jaydon/Jayden/Jaedon/Jaedon/Jaedin in just the past 3-4 years. Current roster is just 1 male & 1 female with different spellings.
I have also had both male & female Jordan/Jordyn
I currently have 3 Samantha's
I currently have 3 Paige/Payge
I currently have 2 McKenna's/1 McKenzie
I currently have 1 male & 1 female Casey
And in my 5th hour, taking attendance is funny & silly because I call out :George, Jaeden, Jacob, Jordan!

And I am expected to learn students names & rosters in 3 days!!!

J's name is #1...yay.
I actually wanted a less popular name, but not some obscure thing no one had ever heard before. My husband, on the other hand, wanted to use an old family name that started with a J and went with the middle name Allen, so my choices were narrowed to John, which would have made him a III, which I don't like, Jessy, which I associate too much as a girl name, and Jacob, which I really liked because I hadn't heard it that much, but it was very traditional. While preggers, I found out it was becoming really popular and tried to get John to change it, but he wouldn't, so Jacob it was.

I too wanted to use the name Isabelle, after my great aunt, but now with twilight it's not happening!

"@ Jodi~ You can probably blame the popularity of "Jayden" on Britney Spears. After she named her son that, I started hearing it all the time!"

Ah, that explains it, I didn't think of that. As I said, it was quite rare when my son was born, I'd only heard it a couple of times.

Seriously, why do people name kids the same name as a celebrity chooses? Do they not have brains of their own?

> my dogs names are in the top 10 list.

Sophie & Chloe.

My oldests name is 229th for 2010
My younger son isn't even in the top 1000
My daughters' name isn't in the 1000 either.

For the second two children, nothing was even suggested as similar although I know my daughters' name has similar names.

I'm a little surprised "Edward" didn't make the top 10 list.

9 years ago, I really wanted to name my daughter Isabella - after Kenny Loggins song "Isabellas' eyes". Such a pretty song. I also wanted to Emily or Emma but hubbys' ex wife was named Emily and he refused to consider either name. THEN Rachel on FRIENDS name her baby Emma so I was utterly screwed in that name choice.

While my kids names are unique they aren't goofy like Apple or Bear Blu or Pilot Inspektor. Their names are real names, although old. Except my younger son. His name came out sci/fi fantasy book. But its short form is very common. so he's "safe".

None of my kids have ever been teased about their names.

[deleted account]

In 2005, Matthew was ranked #4. Last year 2010, Matthew was ranked #16. In all of his daycare, preschool, and now Kindergarten there really was only 1 or 2 other boys with the same name, but not at the same time. This year with 152 students, I have only 1 Matthew.

I prefer traditional common names. I'm not a fan of silly uncommon, or made up names. But it is not the same as an ethnic name, which I have absolutely no problem with whatsoever. Made up names, well I've seen kids get bullied over. Ethnic names are completely different-they tell a story and gives meaning.

I was unpleasantly surprised to see (on the Canadian list) that Thomas is in the 19th most popular name in 2009, but then I looked province by province and it turns out that Quebec is the one with all the Thomases, and we don't live there, so we're okay! In Ontario, Thomas isn't in the top 20, and Owen, which was our other choice but didn't suit him when he came out, is number 8! Whew! :)

Christian is much popular than I thought. It's in the 20's.

We picked it because we liked Christopher, but I hear that name all the time. We didn't want there to be a ton of Christophers in his class. I guess everybody else had the same idea....dang it.

Brooke is at 72 and it's been losing popularity, her middle name Olivia is in the top 10 though. To me it really doesn't matter exactly how popular the name is, as long as there isn't like 5 other Brooke's her age in her classes at school than we shall be all good.

when i had my daughter in 2006, i wanted to name her something unque but i fell in love wit the name alexis, i wanted to spell it Elexus tho. but my husband said it would of been to confusing so i kept it at Alexis Rose ♥. now for my second kid i fell in love with the name Ethan, but i wanted to spell it Eithan! but i didnt like it after a while. so we named him Ethan Floyd after his great grandfather. i wanted uncommon names but fell into the popular names..uggh!! o well i love their names. if i ever have another one tho we wanted to name it after my husbands dad. which his name is Steven Leigh, i dont know why his middle name is spelled the girls ways but if we had a girl i want to name her Leah but spelt like his middle name Leiah! but i dont think im having any more.

Fierna doesn't rank. In fact I've downloaded the zip file of names all the way down to only being used for 5 babies in that year and Fierna hasn't ranked even there!
Juliet is going down too, its 319

When we had Nicholas we knew that it wasn't uncommon but not too common and he was 29th in the year he was born. I have not heard of many Naomi's and her name is 118th. Surprising as most people either really love her name or hate it. Obviously, I love it haha.

My daughter's name (Molly) was 104 the year she was born. While I didn't want her to have one of those really trendy names, I wasn't too fussed about how popular or common it was either. As of yet, we have not encountered another Molly near her age.

However....I have feeling that the name Molly would rank in the top 10 for dog names. I cannot begin to tell you how many people we've met who say "Oh - Molly is our dog's name!". I'm never sure of the appropriate response to that one. I guess it's a good thing I'm such a huge dog lover (and so is my toddler - she loves when we meet a dog named Molly!).

my youngest's name is close to being in the top 10, but it's a letter off... Eva is ranked 91. Paige was ranked 89 the year she was born. I just checked my name, and I was rated 88 the year I was born. Funny, we're all within 3 of each other :P

Edited to add... Paige's middle name Elyse was ranked 749 the year she was born. And Eva's middle name technically doesn't rank because she has 2 middle names, but neither are in the top 1000 for the past 11 years. Her middle name is Lavonne Marlow (named after our grandmothers).

[deleted account]

I didn't think to check middle names...

Oldest daughter's middle name: The exact spelling of her middle name isn't on the list, but the "regular" spelling int he year of her birth was ranked at #37 and in 2010 it was #122

Middle daughter's middle name: in the year of her birth it was ranked at #717 and in 2010 it was ranked at #718

Youngest daughter's middle name: In the year of her birth it was ranked at #325 and in 2010 it was ranked at #365

My girls do have pretty unusual middle names though :)
