LONDON -- Nine men were jailed on Wednesday for grooming and sexually exploiting girls aged as young as 13 in the north of England.

Five victims were "shared" by Kabeer Hassan, Abdul Aziz, Abdul Rauf, Mohammed Sajid, Adil Khan, Abdul Qayyum, Mohammed Amin, Hamid Safi and a 59-year-old man who cannot be named for legal reasons, The Guardian reported.

The men were aged between 24 and 59 all but one were of British Pakistani heritage. The other was from Afghanistan. They were found guilty of conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child, the BBC News reported. Other convictions included rape, sexual assault and sexual activity with a child.

They were given sentences ranging from four to 19 years, the BBC reported.

Jurors were told that the men gave the victims -- all of whom were white -- alcohol and drugs and then would "pass them around" for sex, according to the BBC. Some of the victims were forced to have sex with "several men in a day, several times a week," the jury heard.

The gang preyed on girls from "chaotic" backgrounds, the BBC quoted the police as saying.

The men, who live in the run-down industrial towns of Rochdale and Oldham, were found guilty on Tuesday. Two others were acquitted after the 11-month trial.

It emerged after the conviction that police believed the grooming gang had 50 members, the Manchester Evening News reported.

'Default of political correctness'

Police and social workers have been accused of initially not acting on allegations raised in 2008 for fear of appearing racist.

"This is an absolute scandal. They were petrified of being called racist and so reverted to the default of political correctness," former member of parliament Ann Cryer told The Daily Telegraph. "They had a greater fear of being perceived in that light than in dealing with the issues in front of them."

The tabloid Daily Mail newspaper ran the front-page headline: "Why did no one listen to teenage victims of sex gang?"

However, a senior police officer involved in the investigation rejected calls for the case to be seen through the prism of race.

"It is not a racial issue. This is about adults preying on vulnerable young children," the Telegraph quoted Assistant Chief Constable Steve Heywood of Greater Manchester Police as saying. "It just happens that in this particular area and time the demographics were that these were Asian men."

Nevertheless, the case was seized on by the head of the far-right British National Party (BNP), raising the specter of an extremist backlash.

The leader of the BNP, Nick Griffin, tweeted before the jury had announced its decision that seven verdicts had been reached. It is not clear how he learned of the jury's decision given that strict reporting restrictions were in place.

The case has already sparked protests by far-right groups. Greater Manchester Police said on Wednesday they were preparing for possible racially motivated violence.

Wow, I can not believe the jail terms range from 4-19 years. This is an extremely heinous crime. They should be getting life, IMO. Why is it you can rape and torture someone or multiple and pretty much get off Scott free? Then add drugging, which should be stepping the offense up by a lot. This type of crime is just as bad, if not worse than murdering someone. These girls have to live with this for the rest of their lives!

I cannot believe the Police and Social Workers turned a blind eye because they were to concerned of how they would look. Too worried they would be convicted of being racist. Holy shit! Come on, what is wrong with these people. These girls were being tortured, drugged and forgotten about. How shameful. Well, I bet they feel like idiots now, since they definitely look like a bunch of assholes, only worried about themselves. They were not doing their job. Makes me so angry.

Do you think the Police and Social Workers were right to be worried, to the extent of doing nothing? How about the lenient sentencing these monsters are looking at receiving?

The whole "racial profiling" fear really gets me...

You've heard the saying "if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck"?

We have the same problem with "racism" in the US...Don't dare punish anyone of any ethnicity, because it could be seen as a "racial" thing. Don't make people of middle eastern descent go thru airport security, or they'll scream "profiling"

Well, I'm sorry, but if it LOOKS like it could be a problem, SOUNDS like it could be a problem, and is in any way being avoided because of fear of "racism"...well, then it's a problem that needs to be solved, folks!

I'm so sorry for those poor girls, and outraged that once again, the people of middle eastern heritage were basically ignored because of their ethnicity...allowing this to continue.

After the enquiry into Stephen Lawrence's death, which highlighted "institutional racism" among police forces in the UK, the police are extra careful not to do anything that could be seen to be racist. Is that right? No, as is shown in a case like this.

What concerns me more is that these girls were known to Social Services and nothing was done to protect them.

I'm British and I'm not shocked by this kind of story at all, the Uk has gone p.c mad and it pisses me off people are so frightened of being called racist now a days. Do I think anything will change now this has happened to those poor girls........ no!
I think those monsters will end up on high protection wings then end up with reduced sentence's. I hope I'm wrong and a bunch of hardened criminals get hold of them!

It's so sad!!

Being from the UK this has shocked us all. The world has gone mad it really has. The racist card is played so many times over here, every body is scared to move! If this was a bunch of white men they would of been investigated straight away, also I feel if it were black men but the fact that it was indian and afghan men ment that every one was worried and did not do their jobs properly. I hate it! The fact that people stereotype others by the colour of their skin really irks me! A black, white, green yellow man is just as capable of committing these crimes and all cases should be treated the same. The reality is they are not. The only words of comfort I can offer is that these men are going to find life really hard in the prisons as inmates do not like men who abuse women, as these girls were very young they are in for a shit load of attacks and abuse, and the better news is the prison officers will turn a blind eye to a certain extent. Karma!

I hate to add fuel to the fire but the race card is still being played every single day in the public school system in Omaha, NE. Teachers and administrators will not discipline black students because their parents (not all) come in and scream racism. They don't want to get sued so it's "We'll let it go this time..." or "Since we can't prove if it was his/her pot or if he/she was just holding..." Even if they attack a teacher or another student, it is always somebody else's fault.

By the same token, the rich, white kids (not all) are getting off because nobody wants to upset the money man. My kid can't have any black marks on his record if he wants to get into a good college so what (how much) is it going to take to clear this up? My child would never do such a thing, why would he/she, we've given them everything, they were raised better than that...

If it's not one thing, it's another making kids today think they are so entitled.

Sorry off topic.

It is absolutely incomprehensible that these pukes are getting between 4-19 years. Chemical castration and life in prison sounds reasonable to me.

This is probably not as isolated as one may think- fair enough this is always a shocking tHing to hear - more so in the uk- but I remember something like this happening in my high school in the early nineties here in the states- in my high school the problem was with African Americans.

Gangs of blck students would openly discuss trying 'to get' white girls whether they liked it or not. Due to the 'racial card' a lot of our fears were not taken seriously and/ or teachers turned a blind eye. I was a white girl and in our area, we were the minority.

As a 16 year old prefect in my class, I remember discussing my fears with a teacher about how me and 4 other girls, we were the only white girls in our year, would never venture out during breaks or walk anywhere in school unless we were a group. Can you imagine how scared we were every day in school being leered at by the black guys of our school. It sounds unimaginable that we experienced this at 16 and how our concerns fell on deaf ears.

Im sadden to say that the race card is being used across the board in the uk. Its seems a lot of people fear being excused if it. This is causing tension and allowing hate groups like the BNP to gain followers. I reakly do believe if these had been white english men it would have been dealt with a lot faster.

ETA. Most of these girls were young teens picked up and befriend outside chip shops etc late at night.

The men have been quote as say the girls do not deserve the same respecr as their women because of the way they dress and behave. Which is disgusting but they way a lot (not all) of them see English girls

Ah, so true Louise. They really don't stand much of a chance behind prison walls. I hope they are tortured, every single day they are there.
