Global BC started this news story last night. http://www.globaltvbc.com/canadian+trave...

I know this is nothing new for European travellers to the US. But I find it ridiculous for the US to believe that charging 5.50$ will fix the country's debt crisis. It may in fact cause a decrease in tourism. My husband and I have already decided that we'll just fly into Hamilton,ON then drive to Rochester when we go visit my parents.

What do the rest of you all think?

I think it will cause a decrease in tourism. Especially with all the American stores that are now opening up in Canada. I know a lot of people who would go down to shop, but soon, there will be no reason to anymore.
We'll still go down because I have family there, but we drive there anyway. It would definitely make us think twice about flying!

If they keep charging new fees, it'll be cheaper to fly to Europe. And I'm sorry to say, there's more to see in Europe.

Oh and watching the news a Canadian politician said it best (can't find the specific quote) "charging the entry fee is ridiculous...America is not Disneyland". Made me laugh anyways.

I only live 20 minutes from the border so I'm probably not going to fly into the States any time soon. And if I want to go farther south and want to fly I'll just drive the 2 hours to the nearest American airport especially since I'd have to drive 2 hours in Canada to get to an airport.

That all being said, I think that the charge is a little ridiculous. Flying from Canada to the US they already charge us:
USA Transportation Tax
US Agriculture Fee
US Passenger Facility Charge
USA Immigration User Fee
September 11 Security Fee

I guess they figure they needed another way to tax us for entering their country.

Jenni, I used to live in Rochester, if it weren't for the damn lake I could've been in Toronto in an hour.

With border security nowadays, I haven't crossed in years anyways. I live in a border city. If it weren't for the damn bridge or the tunnel, I could be in the US in 5 mins. But it takes an hour or two to cross.... IF they don't pull you over for a "check".

That's enough of a deterrent for me.

LOL I just want to know if Americans living in Canada (or other countries) can get the fee waved.
