If the picture at left looks like kiddie porn to you, then you are missing the point. What is the point? It is supposed to be a commentary from French Vogue on our culture's obsession with youth.

Clear now?

If not, then you are a lot like me. I also look at these photos and see JonBenet Ramsey and little girls looking disturbingly like adult women, but I also recognize that it is meant to disturb us. It has. But not in the way they intended. Coming from a fashion magazine that is only too happy normally to show us 13 and 14-year-old models dressed up as adult women and call it the beauty ideal, it feels a little false and heavy handed.

Yes, our culture is obsessed with the beauty of youth, but it is a bit like those fashion magazines that tell you to be "happy with the skin you're in" and then set that article next to a photo of a model half your size in the look "you should want."

And I still can't stop being disturbed by these photos just on principle.

Little girls love to play dress-up, but at a certain point, dress-up can give way into "you are way too young to look like that" and this spread crosses that line.

Are these girls even older than 8?

They are beautiful, no doubt and what is disturbing is that they do like high fashion models. They look exactly like slightly smaller versions of the beauty ideal. OK, we get it. But the very fashion magazine that perpetuates such ideas is not the place to showcase this. Maybe it would be better suited in a magazine like Bitch or Ms., two places better known for such social commentary. In Vogue it almost feels like they are serious.

Is this what we are supposed to look like now?

It rubs me the wrong way. It feels cheap and yes, also kind of icky. Like they are half making a point and half trying to titillate people with underage girls. If that's the idea, I am not buying. These little girls are better suited for Hanna Andersson and Gymboree than Versace.

Do you think this spread is getting it's point across?

Kiddie porn it is not. I actually find this much less disturbing than the toddlers and tiaras crap.

I don't understand how it is kiddie porn? They are wearing clothes and none of them are engaging in sexual acts or even look "sexy". I think they look cute and like they are playing dress ups, I can understand why people don't get the supposed point of the spread.

If you go further into the article, it's artistic commentary on our society...the creator doesn't think the girls "look good" this way.

they are saying that we are all idiots and go too far in our vanity and attempts to look young.

I must have missed that bit :/

It looks like anything else you'd find in vogue, but kiddie porn is a ridiculous assertion.

Definitely not "kiddie porn", and not remotely disturbing to me I like the photos and what they convey. Could they have done it differently? Sure. But I like that they just redid the high fashion ads we see in all of our magazines.

I think it's creepy as hell and I had to close the page before I just crawled out of my skin. :P

I think it does its job in that it causes the reader to do a double take. What they thingk after that will vary depending on who they are. I would hate to think what a pedophile would think looking at these images. I would worry about how an 8 year old girl would interpret them.

I don't think it's child porn anymore than I think children lip synching adult songs is child porn. It's funny because they are playing grown up and it's only concerning if they take it to heart or they get the wrong kind of adult attention

If that is the point he wanted to get across, he should have gotten old people (like in their 70s or 80s, 90s would be best!) and dressed them young and slutty. I can't believe the parents of these little girls allowed them to take these pictures. I would never let my daughter take pictures like that. They aren't kiddie porn but to me they are distasteful.

I don't think it's kiddie porn - the girls are fully clothed. But I do think it's disgusting to do this to little girls. I think of Jon Benet too - just like I do when I see the little girls all dolled up for pageants. All I can say is, if I ever have a daughter, no matter how beautiful she is, no way in hell!!

If the point was glamorizing youth, they should have them in pigtails on the playground throwing mud pies and riding bikes...while wearing osh gosh bigosh. THAT makes me want to be young.

I think it's brilliant...I love it. But then I'm old so it seems only fair that I should be bitter about our society's obsession with youth.

Do you suppose they'll do a shoot with skeletons next...to prove the same thing about our obsession with thinness?

I don't like it when kids are dressed up to look like adults period. Not kiddie porn, but not glamorous. Just looks like kids in there mommies expensive cloths...

I agree, Kati, Totally inappropriate, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it was kiddie porn. It is definitely exploitation though. Like the blogger said, it reminds me of JonBenet.
