i recently found out that the westboro baptist church is planning to protest at a play performed in my city tomorrow. the play is called the" laramie project" and it is about matthew shepherd the young gay man who was beaten do death. this "church" (i refuse to actually call it that) protests at soldiers funerals with signs saying God planned 9/11, and burn in hell!. they also protest at anything homosexual with their God hates fags! signs. their website is even called godhatesfags.com.
i understand freedom of speech, but i don't believe these people should be anywhere near a soldiers funeral or anywhere near a play about hatecrimes with their signs condoning hatecrimes. i personally think they should be put in a psychward. they are not rational people, and i truly believe that they are crazy. any points of view out there about this?

yeah, if you go to youtube and type in "crazy church lady" shirley phelps pops up (she's the daughter of the leader). she's been on all sorts of news shows spewing her hate, watch one of her interviews, effing crazy doesn't even begin to describe her. like i said before they really need to be put in a mental hospital. i don't care about their freedom of religion, that isn't religion to me, it's being apart of something that condones and probably does hatecrimes. they make me ill.

I looked at this post and decided to Google them. They are effing nuts!!!!! They were singing a song about God hates the world and all her children, then after the older crazies were done they made a 3 year old sing it!! How terrible, how can a Christian church hate people so much? They need a good kick in the arse! Disgusting, ugh I'm repulsed..............

These people are crazy! They are Baptist? Isn't that Christian? Christians follow Christ and Christ was only ever loving and accepting. I don't think these people are Christians at all, I think they are just obsessed with making the news and causing problems.

Ugh have any of you ever seen Jesus Camp? It's a documentary about Evangelicals who brainwash their children into thinking they're God's army and they're going to destroy "the fags" and "the coloreds." Now I know that not all Evangelicals are like this... or I hope not, but this movie made me physically ill. They're just as bad as this disgusting "church." Honestly. Who thinks these things up? Ridiculous.

Urgh, it's vile.
I watched a programme once about some people like them (might have even been them for all know!) and this bloke had taken his young son out with him to 'preach' about how gays should die and stuff like that.
These other men started telling him what a jerk he was (in slightly stronger words than that!) and this 'preacher's' son was crying and BEGGING his dad to take him home. It was heartbreaking!!

Believe in what you want you want to believe in, just have a bit of RESPECT as you do it!

i agree veronica, my husband is an atheist and cannot possibly see the good in christianity at all, not for just this reason alone, but these people make him not want to believe in something that these crazies have anything to do with. even the evangelical christian people make him want to puke. my mothers side of the family is all mennonite & amish and he tolerates other peoples religion very well. he will pray with my family and completely understand christians point of view on things, but when it comes down to it, he just doesn't understand how people can have blind faith in something that has not been scientifically proven. he's all about facts. and when the facts are that idiots like these actually call themselves christian-it doesn't help our cause.

They were theoretically coming to protest at a funeral here-until a big old group of redneck bikers threatened to break their necks if they came near. Sometimes it pays to live around rednecks. ;)

I'm in agreement with everyone else here. I would happily protest against them if they ever came to my area.

These wastes of space tried to come to Canada last year to protest at Tim McLean's funeral saying his tragic horrifying death was God's way of telling Canada that he was mad about our abortion laws, gay rights and divorce and remarriage. (for those that don't know last summer he was killed after a greyhound bus was taken hostage by a mentally disturbed man. He was stabbed multiple times and decapitated.)

Canadians rallied against them though. Our border officials were told to turn them away at the border, though a few did manage to get through. When that was found out 700+ Canadians vowed to show their support and respect for the family and signed up to form a human wall between the family and protesters.

And no they are not rational in any sense. People like that need to find their own tiny island so they can preach and live the way they want and stay out of the countries they hate so much.

They came to Denver during the DNC too...they were the most hateful, divissive, aweful people I've ever seen, how any of them can call themselves Christians, I do not know. I am not surprised by this, but I am sickened, and saddened!

quoted Esther:

"I am with you all the way. I think those people are a disgrace and they make me want to hurl. I would hope that most real Christians would feel the same way I do."

Believe me Esther, we do.

It's an embarrassment. The Lord is a loving God - there may be teachings against certain things in this world - but He didnt tell us to go out and judge/hate others! We are to love one another! Whether God planned something or not to happen in this world - does not mean we go around hating on people, we turn to him to help us through those times! Not create hate crimes and protest with mean/ugly/hate -- Its an embarrassment and gives anyone 'religious' a bad name - those are the types of people, that put others off when it comes to God - does that make sense? Shoving ideas and hate on people doesnt make them want anything to do with Him at all - it pushes people further away.

Its just plain sad. Just really sad.

Nuttier than squirrel turds, the lot of them.

Kati, I think they're all talk and no action, so your husband should be fine. Those people are nothing but cowards, hiding behind hate and poorly lettered signs.
