My "handbag" is a backpack/rucksack. It generally contains

reusable shopping bag

whatever book I'm currently reading

netbook & power cord

iPod, earbuds & charging cable

pens, pencil, highlighter

chequebook

wallet

notebook

band-aids

ibuprofen

water bottle

paper napkins

lip balm

keys

packet of gum

my lunch bag (only when going to/from work)

miscellaneous paperwork :P

When DD was a baby it had all this stuff (minus the electronics, which I didn't own back then) and also contained

ziploc freezer bag of clean diapers

empty ziploc bag for wet/dirty diapers

changing pad

wipes

extra pants & onesie in case of leakage :P

Swiss Army knife (I have had to leave off carrying this around all the time because I might forget and try to get on a plane with it, and then it would be confiscated)

And when she was a toddler, also

tupperware container of Cheerios

a couple of board books

miscellaneous toddler toys

a sippy cup

a teddy bear

Many years ago I used to carry emergency tampons and/or pads, but it's been over a decade since I needed them regularly so not anymore.

I still use my purse if I go out alone - like to the grocery store while hubby is home. In fact once my daughter was about a year a started using a very small diaper bag and my purse or for very quick trips I would just throw a diaper and wipes in my purse.

I have a 2 year old and 3 month old.

My diaper bag includes:

2 changes of clothing for each kid, diapers for the baby, wipes, diaper cream, a brush, 1-2 books, 1-2 snacks, sippy cup, receiving blanket, Ktan carrier, wallet, lotion, chapstick, my inhaler, and cell phone.

Jacob is 4, so I finally have my purse back lol On occasion, when we're going somewhere for a long time, I do still carry his diaper bag or his back pack with a change of clothing, snacks and his InnoTab. But my purse? Always now, and always has contained:

wallet (with driver's license, debit card, cash, etc)

2-3 pens

about 15 old grocery store reciepts

check book

tampons

Tylenol

keys strapped to the ring on the outside

I don't like purses. I often wish I could go back to how I was when I was younger and just carry my ID and money in my back pocket and strap my keys to my belt loop and just GO!

hahah..dats wonderful I must say... Mums carry 90% of the same items and many that I missed and reading these replies I was like - O yeah I too have that in mine ALWAYS..like tampons, pen, clipbook Toy and backpack are there provided she is willing to carry them on her own..lol and when we three move out, my handbag is no less than a FAMILY BAG..hubby darling would just sweep his mobiles, licence, money all to my side..rofl.

So do your hubbys do the same?

My bag has my life in it. Pretty much whatever is at home that I would need for my daughter, myself, or my husband is in my bag. Ohhh yes, that includes extra contact solution and a contact case, q-tips, mace, nail glue, toothpaste..the list goes on. I KNOW that all sounds crazy but I assure you that I have needed most of those items in the past. I am also a serious coupon user, so most of those items didn't cost me much.

Funny story: I was shopping with my daughter once and this woman was trying to soothe her baby in the store. This baby was whining for a good 4 or 5 minutes straight. She made eye contact with me and I smiled and gave her the "oh, I've been there" look. I got the guts to walk up to her and ask if I could get her something. She smiled and said no thank you and it was just her baby's teeth. Well, I whipped out baby orajel and teething tablets lol. She used both and after a minute, her baby was comfy enough to take the pacifier and she was good to go :)

i didn't change my purse until recently because it was too big and i started losing things in it, haha. but i kept my wallet, spare keys, a binder with all my important documents (because i was doing a lot of welfare crap), and.......maybe some extra paper and a couple pens. the diaper bag held everything else. diapers, baby wipes, powder, a change or two of clothes, some toys, baby food if we were out for a while, and some nonsense stuff like pens and baby girl's hair brush. if i didn't feel like carting around my purse (which was often) i just stuck my wallet in the diaper bag and off we were.

now, since my daughter's gotten bigger and doesn't need so much stuff, she has a new little back pack that has her diapers, wipes, powder, and a jacket if she doesn't have one on. as for me, i have switch over to an over-sized clutch with three pockets that is just big enough for my wallet, checkbook, and a little notebook. it has a clip for my keys, too. my phone stays in my pants pocket. so i never carry too much with me. it's too much of a strain with a big purse and a 14mo while pregnant and extremely moody.

My pill prescription is also in one of the zip up pockets because I'm the kind of person who remembers at the time and if it's in my bag I can just get it rather than drive all the way home or lose the script around the house somewhere.

I have a medium size storage box/lid in my van, in there I keep:

6 diapers

wipes

3 sets of clothes (one for each kid)

diaper cream

In my purse:

keys

cards

money

pen

phone

chapstick

sometimes I throw 2 diapers in for the twins if we'll be out for a bit and I won't feel like going back to the van. I ditched having a diaper bag, just didn't make sense for us since we'de load it with 80 lbs worth of stuff that we rarely used!

[deleted account]

In my purse....

wallet w/ license and other cards in it

cell phone (usually it's in my pocket, but occasionally in my purse)

glasses

emergency inhaler (that I never use)

keys

ibuprofen

couple of pens

comb

Anything else we might need is in our van. I've never carried around a diaper bag, but I did use to have one in the van w/ diapers in it. My van always has paper towels, so those doubled as wipes. ;)

Gah.

Wallet

Phone

Keys

Two sizes of diapers

Lots of wipes

Kleenex

Wet bag

Change of clothes for Annie

Snack and water cup for Freja

Soothers for Annie

Bibs

Amusement items: rings, Sophie, crayons, paper

An extra shirt for Freja if going to the museum (there's a water station)

A sweater for me and small receiving blanket to wipe up if Annie makes me messy while eating

I think that's it.

My kids are 3.5 & 5.5yrs old, so I don't really carry stuff for them!

I always have:

Phone

Keys

Wallet

Mini hair brush

Lip balm (mine and kids)

Mirror

Diary

Pen

Tissues

My son has to take a spare set of clothes to nursery but that goes in his bag with his reading book and he carries that all by his onesie. Lil girl has school bag for books and homework which she carries. If we go out anywhere, I'll stick a bottle of water in my bag for the kids.

[deleted account]

I have a similar system to Meme's.

Small bag:

Lip gloss

Hand sanitizer

Phone

Keys

Moleskin notebook

Pen

Wallet

Calendar (Yep, I still use a written on--I write all of the cute things J says and does in it on the date, and I'm saving them for him to read later, and I put all our appointments in it because I ALWAYS forget to look at the one in my phone)

Big Bag:

Brush

Wipes

Nook

A Book for me

Powder and facial brush

Water & Snack (sometimes)

The big bag stays packed by the door. If we are going to be out all day together, I'll grab it and drop the small bag into it, so I only have one bag. J is 7 now, when he was smaller it also held a few other things, but it's been so long I don't really remember.....

My purse still carries the exact same things (except has a purse sized pack of wipes in it.) Anytime I have my son, I take his Toy Story backpack. Which has EVERYTHING he would ever need in it. I will either wear it on my back or hand it over the handles on the stroller.

My Purse:

cheque book (all cards as well)

cellphone

small pack of hand wipes

keys

money (rarely...LOL)

Boys backpack:

3 changes of clothing

bottle

snacks

diapers

wipes

3 toys (play phone, car and twisty turny thing)

butt cream

wash cloth
