What do you think?

Today I was at walmart looking for clothes for my daughter. She's out grown pretty much everything. I found some t-shirts in her size no problem but after walking up and down the aisle for little girls I couldn't find any pants that would fit her. She's tall and slim and it can be hard to find clothes that fit her waist. All I wanted was a pair of jeans for her. They didn't even have jeans in the girls section. Only pink and purple pants with flowers and things and lots of leggins and spandex. So I decided to check the boys department. Sure enough I found a simple pair of blue jeans that fit her perfect so I bought them.

My question is do you think its okay to buy your child clothes intended for the opposite sex? I find boys clothes tend to be less gender specific where as girls clothes always seem to be covered in flowers or butterflies with things like sweetheart written on them. If its okay for a girl to wear boys clothes (many girls and women do without criticism) is it okay for boys to wear girls clothes? I honestly don't know if I would ever buy my son (if I ever have one) a pair of pants from the girls aisle simply because the clothes are so girly. Anyway I was just wondering what other moms thought about this.

I don't see why it matters in the least. And you're right Deanna - I totally disagree with you. Why is it OK for a girl to wear "boy clothes" but not OK for a boy to wear "girl clothes"?

I buy clothing thats black in the boys section for my daughter. They dont have girls clothing like that.

I don't see an issue with one sex wearing clothes from the other sex.
I have bought my daughter cargo pants in the boys section, because she doesn't like pink, hearts, flowers or butterflies on her clothes. She likes pockets and lots of them.
My 5 year old's favourite shirt is a shirt with McQueen from Cars on it. Meh.. I don't care, to me it's not even a "boys" shirt, just cause it's blue and has a car on it, and was purchased in the boys department does not make it a boys shirt!!
I say buy what fits and what your kid wants to wear, purple raincoat for Freddy or blue rain coat for Jane, doesn't matter to me, both of them will stay dry!!

I think you're a very smart woman to have thought of it. I wouldn't have thought of it. Good job!

I always wanted a girl but I had a boy first and I think boy stuff is so easy and sooo cute! I won't know how to dress a girl!

my son like his sister things

Buy what fits and what's comfortable. Why buy something that the child hates, doesn't fit properly and ends up being a waste of money.

I think if son like girls thing let him have them
if daughter liek boys thing let her have them

I say it is fine. She needs clothes. I find pants for little kids are always made with such a big waistline in comparision with the actual sizing.

I have never understood why a boy would want to wear girls clothes, and never will understand why parents let them. (out side of dress up play, short periods of time, AT HOME) As for girls wearing boys clothes it is fine to a point as long as you can tell she is still a girl. We buy boy pants from time to time just because we can't find a pair of jeans to fit one of the kids. However, it is always after looking around in the girls section as you did. Now remember this is MY opinion and I know it will get a bunch of haters but then that is why we are all different people. Who would like everyone having the same opinion? lol

I found a pair of combat camo pants just like my fiance's in the store and bought them for my daughter. I have a pink or purple shirt on top with them. They look really cute together in their camo.

If that's where you find clothes that fit, I don't see why not! Especially jeans, they're pretty gender neutral. That drives me nuts too Joy, the fact that there are 3 times as many clothes for girls as for boys. There's a store here called Please Mum that I love because it has cute little boy clothes and as many clothes for boys as for girls.
Marylea, have you tried Dapper Snappers? I use them for my boys because we have the same problem with waist sizes. They're great.

My daughters favorite shirts are boy shirts... She gas a Toy Story tee, a dinosaur tee, and just a ratty blue tee. I see no problem with it. I just throw her hair in a ponytail the days she wears them, just to girl her up a tad.

And I'd have no problem with a boy wearing girl clothes.

I'd buy my son "girl's" jeans if I couldn't find any in the boy's department. What used to irk me is that in just about every store (from Wal Mart to JCPenney), the girl's section is always HUGE. And the boys get like 3 racks. I had to go to 4 different stores to stock up on winter clothes for my son but if he was a she I could have gotten everything at Wal Mart or Target. There are ALWAYS tons more girl's things than boy's things.

There's a store I used to shop at in Florida called Beall's Factory Outlet....oh how I miss that store. The little boy's section had like 3 of those reeeeeeallly long racks (seriously, each rack was like 30 feet long) full of clothes in all sizes. Of course, the girl's section had SIX racks but still...

I think this depends on where you shop. I've had little trouble finding clothes for my kids (tall and slim). It's a pain in the arse going from the different malls to downtown to specific children's stores but they are out there to find. Not all girls clothes are that girly. Wal mart is bad for it though. =/
