What leads parents to do this?

Police in Virginia are investigating a horrific case of alleged child abuse, in which one child was found Thursday locked inside a filthy makeshift cage and the remains of another were found buried outside the family's home.

"This is the worst [case] I have seen in my career," Lt. Scott Little of the Gloucester County sheriff's office told The Huffington Post today.

Authorities have charged Brian Gore, 29, with one count of felony child abuse and his wife, Shannon Gore, 25, with one count of felony child abuse and one count of attempted capital murder. Additional charges may be forthcoming, police said.

The investigation into the case began Thursday, when deputies from the sheriff's office went to the Gores' home in the Waterview Mobile Home Park in Hayes, a small community located about 20 miles west of Williamsburg. Authorities were following up on an investigation into several area burglaries.

"We had information that there might be some [items] at their house [and] that is what we got a search warrant for," Little said.

However, once at the residence, the scope of the investigation changed when deputies found an extremely malnourished little girl, believed to be 5 or 6 years old, inside a modified crib that had a piece of wood covering the top, imprisoning the child.

"She was in the crib nude and covered with feces," Little said, adding that the child suffered from severe starvation and appeared to have been inside the crib for a "significant period of time."

The child was transported to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital’s emergency room and then transferred to Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters, where she is listed in guarded condition.

Doctors told investigators that if the child had not been discovered last week, that "at this time, the child would probably have been deceased," Chief Deputy Darrell Warren Jr. said.

A second child, a 1-month-old male, was also found inside the Gore residence. He was found to be in good condition. Given the circumstances of the situation, the toddler was placed into protective custody by the Gloucester Department of Social Services.

On Friday evening, investigators made another startling discovery at the Gores' home when they dug near a freestanding shed. It was there, at about 8:30 p.m., that they discovered the remains of another child buried in the ground, police said.

Authorities are not commenting on whether they received specific information that led them to the child's remains. The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Richmond. The age, gender and identity of the remains are not yet known.

Neighbors told local media outlets that they knew about the 1-month-old boy but were unaware of the little girl or the child who was found buried in the yard.

"I knew they had a baby, they had a new baby, little boy," neighbor Danny Blackwell told WDAM 7 News. "I thought [he] was their first child."

People close to the family say the couple's parents were also unaware of the little girl's existence, KTHV, of Little Rock, Ark., reported.

According to Little, the Gores, who are both being held without bond at Gloucester County Jail, are believed to be the parents of all three children.

How can anyone do this to their child? How could they ever try to justify keeping their child in a cage covered in feces?
So sad...

Never mind sterilized. They need to be shot!
There are no answers. They are sick, twisted, and broken people. How you could have so little empathy, so little love for your child that you could treat them like this is completely beyond my understanding.

As for why one and not the other, maybe they wanted a boy and not a girl.

As for why at all. . .I think that there is no one on this earth who could give an answer to that. Some people are just monsters. I hope they get what they deserve. There are special pits in prison for people who abuse children.

I remember when this story broke, it was so sad. I couldnt even speak and my dh kept calling them monsters and suggested a little Charlie Daniel's justice. once I could speak I agreed. those poor babies! It just makes no sense why someone would do something like that.

Oh my. This saddens me to the highest extent. I cant believe someone could do this to their own children. I dont even know what to say... Im so heartbroken for these children and every other child that has to suffer and endure such pain. :(

I don't think we will EVER understand why some (monsters) i would not call them parents,do horrific stuff like this.

Its absolutely heartbreaking.I pray to god the children who were found alive, heal and get all the help the need& can start living as children should. It will some what be better for the baby to as he has no memory of this.

For the older girl, my heart is broken.

I wish you could just wipe all of those horrific memories clean from her little mind.:-(

I hope in time they find parents to love, care, nurture and protect them.My thoughts are with them.

I can never imagine what those little children must of had to endure, physically-mentally and emotionally.

I feel no guilt in saying they deserve public beatings for a long time. Hopefully they will receive a reasonble punishment from our legal system because fortunately I'm not in charge.

No kidding, how could the neighbours not know? They lived in a trailer park? Did they muzzle her so she couldn't make noise?

I don't have the answer to your questions. I'm just completely disgusted by these people. How anyone can do this to their child, I will never understand. It's just plain EVIL.

*shakes head* Some people don't deserve to be parents and here is the perfect example. There are so many people who can't have children and then there are people (I won't call them parents because they are not) like this who should be fortunate to have kids, yet they are disgusting losers who don't know the first thing about being one.

I doubt the little girl will ever live even close to a normal life. That's probably what pisses me off most. I don't get how anyone can treat a child this way. So small and innocent, filled with love and trust. And some people break them. It's so disgusting, what's wrong with the world.

As if the whole thing wasn't insane enough on its own, is it not totally bizarre that the son was treated "normally"? I don't get that. They kill one, nearly kill another and the third one is obviously out in the world enough to be known by family and neighbours? Weird.

The whole thing is sick. I don't know what more there is to say about it. I hope that little girl is able to live a normal life one day.

I'm going to have to come back to this, I'm too upset to type out my response.
