What's in a Name?

So this has really been bothering me since I heard it on the news the other day. Apparently the new debate in our state capitol is over the official title of the decorated tree they put up every year. Is it a Christmas tree or a Holiday tree? Now there's going to be a proposal to create an official title to "Holiday" tree so they don't offend anyone by having it up.

My thoughts . . . it's a tree! It's got lights, and it's pretty. Christians will always call it a Christmas tree no matter the "official" title, and others are welcome to call it what they wish as well! I don't think that debating this in the capitol is a good use of the states time and money! It's simply not a political debate! There are plenty of other more pressing matters that our elected officials should be working about!

So annoyed! And when a friend on FB was all up in arms over calling it anything but a Christmas tree, I pointed out that the origins of decorating a tree come from pagan traditions for celebrating the winter solstice and was later adopted by Christians . . . he deleted my comments! Wow!

Why does the name of a tree (and history) matter so much? I assemble a Christmas tree in my home every year because it's part of family traditions . . . and I love the way it looks and how relaxing it is to turn off all the lights except those on the tree. I certainly don't care if someone else calls my tree a holiday tree . . . last time I checked Christmas was a Holiday!

I just can't fathom why it's such a big deal to some people! Now where in the bible does it say that we should all decorate a tree and lay gifts beneath it in order to celebrate and remember the birth of Christ!

If anyone out there has a strong opinion on this, please explain to my why it's such an issue . . . otherwise I guess I'll assume it's our politicians and media blowing this into a freaken issue just to piss off people like me! Oh and to waste time & money avoiding real issues!

I'm assuming this is happening in the US. And I totally agree with you, to be honest. I am not religious, but I really couldn't care less what the tree is called. It's a decoration that is meant to commemorate a holiday that is not even technically a government endorsed holiday. So why should anyone care? Does the tree have a label? Does it have anything to do with our national security, or the state of our economy?

Or is it just a morale-boosting action on behalf of the capitol to bring some festivity to the season that a great deal of people celebrate in some fashion, with or without the religious overtones?

There are so many more things that need work. The title of a decoration is not too high on my list of priorities.

I will sign your proposal! How 'bout Lynn or Jaime? Good unisex names??

Edit- I like Hal, but it makes me chuckle everytime, not good for solemn moments!

Love the comedy Ladies! I think I'm going to have to find out when they're presenting the proposal and make myself an appearance at the state capitol and put in my two cents!

I'll make my own proposal to have the official title of the tree be "Bill"

Well, Hal's a legacy name for us. Hal used to be the radio in my first car.

But I guess it could be a Ruth. For some reason, my tree looks like a Ruth were it to be female.

Oh gees! Give the pagans back their darn tree!!!! Actually the pagans gave it us(Christians), and it's those *^&% atheist who started this fight! PLEASE!! All that is going on in the world right now, and we have to argue over the 'name' of a dead tree??? What is next, banning calling an imaginary fat guy 'SAINT Nick'? I got an idea for my fellow Christians who want to pick fights and be nasty, lets go back to Christ birth. Leave the pagans holiday all together! Celebrate Christ birth when it actually happened! Forget St. Nick, leave him for the Catholics! I doubt he wanted all this fuss anyway! No candles unless your Jewish! Let's all seperate, and go our own 'Merry' way! LOL People amaze me, when did a courtesy such as 'Merry Christmas' become 'F you!' How did we turn 'peace on Earth, goodwill to men' into 'kiss my *ss'? We are suppose to reach out to people, and not to smack the crap outta them! My Jesus taught love. I think I'll follow him, even if it means being polite to some crazy Islamist!

But it dresses up nicely, in beautiful bright colours, the children are in awe of it, and Santa comes to it and lays gifts at its feet....it has to be a woman!

Why does it have to be a masculine name? I think that's sexist, you girls should be calling it a feminine name. Or maybe, to be fair to everyone, perhaps something androgynous. Perhaps we could call it.....Chris or something.

It pisses me off too. Honestly it is Christmas and therefore should be called a Christmas tree. Dec. 25th isn't called a holiday it is called Christmas. Call it what it is and move on. For Chrimminey sakes!!!!

That does it. My tree shall henceforth be known as Hal. Hal deserves a name for providing so much help in ensuring my kids remain in fear of irritating a mystical fat man who invades our house on a certain night to leave material gifts under his branches.

People can get so worked up about things that don't really matter. I don't know if there's much you can do about it, other than make snarky comments about politicians wasting time bickering... That's what I do. ;)

We will always call it a christmas tree, it goes up at christmas, it just makes sense to call it that.
