I was warned that this wasn't a movie for kids, and I am glad I was. I saw so many kids in the movie theatre, and I could only wonder what they were making of the movie.

It was an adult drama, based on a child's book and it was hard for me, as a grown adult, to watch.

What did you think of it?

What age would you suggest it was appropriate for?

That being said, I enjoyed watching it. It was a well done, adult drama.

My husband taught my daughter to call it "Emo-hipster garbage" which is really WAY too cute to hear a 4 year old say. :D

And yes, it truly is emo-hipster garbage.

"Terrible, boring and pretentious without much meaning behind it but what people might have assigned to it out of the desire for it to have some purpose."

THAT is the definition of "emo-hipster garbage". Thank you, Rebecca! :)

I thought it was pretty good and I got the connections of characters to his real life and events to his real life. I like the book better though. My daughter had nightmares when I let her watch Lion King once, so this is an absolutely no go (then again she's not even 2, so I never intended to let her watch this young anyways.) My sister brought her 7 year old to see it (her very emotionally sensitive 7 year old I might add who suffers from severe anxiety) and she had nightmares for weeks. Depends on the child I guess, but I think it's more geared for pre-teenish age personally.

I rented it and really didn't like it.. I thought it was a snore... I think they tried to make it too artsy fartsy, and it failed in my mind. HUGE dissapointment since I love the book..

Yes, Kate, I think I saw some emo-hipster garbage fans leaving the theatre after like four hours of this slag shaking their heads as if they just saw the second coming in emo-hipster garbage cinema...

It is truly dreadful and I really like Spike Jonze.

My niece watched it at 5. The kids (at 8) and I watched it for a while, but one of my girls got sick w/ a high fever and we went home. We've never borrowed it from my dad yet, so I don't really know..

My four year old is really sensitive to movies. We watched it together and she became uncomfortable with it. We LOVE the book, though.

I haven't seen it, though I do want to.

I'm not really concerned with whether my son does or doesn't watch it with me. He watched full metal jacket with me the other day, and he's two.

I haven't seen it yet, but based on the trailer I knew it would not be appropriate for my 5yo.

Ooh - just saw the connection to the Dark Crystal - that movie scared me when I was a kid. If it's along those lines then no I won't let my son watch it - he does get kind of scared like me.

What does "emo-hipster garbage" mean? I haven't seen it but would like to as I remember the book when I was a kid. I thought it was only rated PG? I would let my son watch it unless there's a reason I shouldn't. Is it really scary or something? Why was it hard to watch?
