Why do you think people litter?

Is it just an "I don't give a damn about the cleanliness of my surroundings or have respect for anything" kind of attitude? Are they just dirty by nature or is it learned from their parents or peers?
Why can't they find a trash can? Do you think their homes are most likely a reflection of that filthy attitude as well?

I think it's a combination of everything said here. Some people are lazy, others feel entitled because "someone else" will pick it up, some just don't give a rats ass.

I don't know where this attitude comes from honestly. It's different for different people.

As for cigarette butts, thing that pisses me off about those. The ones standing in front of a smoking section with the ashtray RIGHT THERE and instead toss it on the ground. TURN AROUND AND PUT IT IN THE ASHTRAY! OMFG!

Oh and this one, I've seen more than once, some douche will pull up to a red light. The passenger (or driver in some cases) will pull out their ashtray and dump it on the road. I feel like running into them with my minivan. My god. Is it so hard to empty the damn thing BEFORE you leave the house?! Is it!!

I don't think it's necessarily a reflection of their homes though. I'm sure it is in some cases but not all of them.

I had an idiot boyfriend in college. This very issue is what made me re-think our relationship. We brought our lunch outside, and he decided he'd leave his trash right there on our beautiful campus instead of walking 10 steps to the garbage can. "That's how some people stay employed, they pick up our trash! They get PAID to do it so I don't have to." Dumba**.

Then he proceeded to tell me the only reason I was bothered by litter was because environmentalism is "cool" and I was trying to be cool. Nope, sorry. I just would like to enjoy the beautiful outdoors without seeing cigarette butts and Styrofoam cups laying everywhere. Besides that, I grew up in a trashy neighborhood. My dad attached a bucket to his bike, and several afternoons a week we'd go bike riding to pick up all the litter. He told me that God created the Earth and we needed to take care of what He gave us. I love my Daddy.

So long story shortcake, I think the attitude is about shirking off personal responsibility. And yes, I think it carries over into other areas of their lives.

It's laziness and selfishness - that whole 'the rules don't apply to me' mindset.

I am a smoker, but nothing aggravates me more than taking my daughter to a park, beach or down to the lake and having to dodge cigarette butts. I should be able to let her run free, and instead I'm constantly freaking out that she's going to put a butt in her mouth.

When out and about with my children they refuse to drop anything. My daughter has almost had a meltdown because she couldn't find a bin. lol.
People who litter are just being lazy.

Cigarette butts are so gross, people always chuck them around the cigarette receptacle instead of in it.

And I think anyone throwing a lit cigarette butt out a car window should be shot on the spot. Forget fines and warnings.....

Dogs are fine, as long as their owners pick up their poop. I have a neighbor (the "nosy" old man) who yells at the people who don't pick up after their dogs in the greenway behind our house. I love him for it, because there would be nothing grosser than bare feet in dog poo. Ugh!

What's with the cigarette butts though? That is my hugest litter pet peeve. People with any class carry a little tin around with them and put their butts in there. Clearly 97% of smokers have no class. Because there aren't all that many smokers where I live and I still see a lot of butts everywhere. Gross!!!

Dogs that stinks and let fleas in are gross, I know some people with dogs that come in and their house just REEKS of wet dog.

I wouldn't count on it Emma.....while I love my daughter's attitude about rubbish in the school yard (and anywhere for that matter), you haven't seen her room......

They're just lazy. And it usually shows when you go to their house and they've got plates of food scraps (usually bacon rinds) sitting around, let their stinky dogs inside and coke cans squished between the couch cushions and their yard is full of broken down cars.

It annoys the heck out of me. I honestly can't understand it either, and I do think it is pure laziness. I have always taught my kids that if you can't find a bin, you hold onto your rubbish until you can find one. There is no excuse for just throwing litter on the ground (or wherever else it doesn't belong).

I don't think it is necessarily a reflection on what their homes look like - I think it is a basic lack of respect for property that is not their own.

I must admit I was so proud of my 5 year old daughter when she came home from school one day and told me she had spent lunch break picking up rubbish. When I asked her if she had been told to do that because she was in trouble for something, she told me no, she just wanted to do it because it makes the school look better and people shouldn't throw their rubbish around. I hope she keeps up with that attitude :)

I just think people don't stop to really think "I should throw this away" or to find a suitable place for refuse. It's pure laziness and disrespect of their environment and probably the same people who deface public property as well.
