SACRAMENTO - An elementary school yard monitor and crossing guard has been accused of possessing child porn.

According to Captain Jim Cooper of the Sacramento Sheriff's Department, 37-year-old Darrin Dean Byington was arrested Thursday for child porn possession from his home on 10th Street in Sacramento. The police also took his two computers into custody.

Cooper says the suspect was employed by the Sacramento Unified School District as a crossing guard at Matsuyama Elementary in Sacramento, and he first appeared on their radar 10 months ago. They had been watching him closely, and arrested him as fast as possible when they learned he worked at the school.

"He's got no criminal history, there's no way they (the school) ever would have known and fortunately we're out there doing proactive work looking for child sexual predators and we caught this individual," Cooper said.

Many school parents found out when they picked up their children Friday afternoon.

"It's disturbing, it's unsettling that somebody like that would be associated with a school, but the good news is he was arrested and he won't be in the position he was around all of our children," said mother Janet Ferguson.

"I'm stunned, I can't believe it," said Susie Lauck. "The PTA pulled funds together so that he could maintain his job because we loved him, he was great."

Investigators say 40 video files were found on Byington's computers. Most of the children in the videos were ages 8 to 11; the youngest was three.

Cooper said his team does not believe any children were hurt during Byington's employment at the school. They also don't believe he was producing porn.

The Sacramento City Unified School District has begun formally notifying parents about the situation.

In a statement a spokesperson said, "The part-time employee in question has been placed on administrative leave. Parents were notified of this arrest this (Friday) afternoon. The district is taking these allegations extremely seriously and should the charges prove true, the district will take the strongest possible action."

Thank Heaven for those officers who diligently searched for this kind of person and was able to find this man before he harmed the children he worked with.

It makes me want to cry for the children put through the horrible experience of being in "porn". Such a sad sad thing to happen to such innocent little angels...and some sick bastards are still out there doing it getting their rocks off.
When I was in college, I worked at a gas station and we hired this new guy who was in his 60's. I refused to train him because I would have to be alone with him...I had MAJOR red flags...but everyone said I was being paranoid. He always talked about how he watched his 6 grandkids everyday and on the weekends and how much fun they had etc etc etc...he just made me naseous. One day, I got called in on emergency because the swat had busted in on him streaming live video of one of his grandkids. We all got questioned to make sure we didn't know anything more...and I was the only one who worked there who said I KNEW something wasn't right with him.
I hope they throw the book at this guy...and then some. These bastards should be put on public display so that we can beat the crap out of them...even that's too good for them. I HATE child molesters.

I don't think he kept it hidden. Someone knew, looked the other way, told themselves they were over reacting, didn't want to make waves, didn't want to put a mark of the family's good name .... whatever, someone knew.

Wow... I think it's fucking amazing he kept something like that hidden for so long. =| Yet another person in a position of authority that we trust with our children.

I find it odd though that this is a paid position. When I was in school, and still now, it's older kids from the school who are the crossing guards with a teacher who supervises them.

Holly, That's awful. To even be a parent volunteer here you have to go through a background check. I don't know how much the teachers go through to get hired but I'm sure they're checked just as thoroughly.

Omg, I just literally, no joke, threw up in mouth when I read that his videos contained children as young as 3, the same age as my daughter. Anybody that posses and therefore encourages people to make this type of filth should get the death sentence. The world would be better without them. That is sick sick sick.

100% agree Sara! This is crazy for me because it is right where I live! Fortunately, my daughter is in the next school district over, but she was in the Sac Unified district for 1st grade and I KNOW they don't do any kind of background check even for people wanting tl help IN the classroom! I signed up and was able to help right away (they even offered to hire me - right then and there - as a teacher assistant as soon as they found out I studied to be a teacher a few years ago).

Personally, I think anyone who possesses, looks at or participates in any way with child porn should have their balls and their hands cut off, but that's just me.
