I live in a place that gets pretty chilly in the wintertime. Muskoka Ontario Canada (google it if you like) Even though I have lived in this general region of Canada for many years, as have my neighbours and family, it seems to surprise me every February as people curse and swear about how damn cold it is outside. Some of my favourite winter time quotes

"It's cold as hell out there" ~~ hmmm I thought hell was all fire and brimstone?
"Gawd it's nipply out today!" ~~ yes the girls agree, thank god for the extra tank top today.
"Do you know how cold it is out there right now?" ~~ not right now, as you can see, I am inside.
"When will winter end???" ~~~hmmm.. usually around March 20th
"I can't take this anymore" ~~~ whatcha gonna do about it then huh? What exactly do you plan to do to winter?
"Why does it have to be so cold?" ~~ We live in Canada, OMG, stop acting like it's your first winter here and you came from some island in the south pacific.
"I hate winter" ~~ yeah, me too, it's nice up until about January 2nd, then it just sucks wang man, but you know what? It's a nice trade off for socialized medicine, democracy, cleaner air, cleaner soil, beautiful lakes and rivers and streams, gorgeous sunsets, and summer.... ah summer, you wonderful, warm blanket that wraps us all up for a good 10 weeks every year, I miss you and I'll see you soon, in the meantime I'll try hard to keep everyone from driving me insane with their winter whining..
:)Tara who may or may not be suffering some cabin fever.

It's a balmy -6 right now, I'm drinking warm apple juice, and doing laundry. We have this time of day pricing in Ontario for hydro, so it's cheaper after 7 at night, so here I sit doing all my laundry, running the dishwasher etc.
Hmmm... maybe I should find some whisky for my apple juice.

I've lived in Canada my whole life and I hate winter - this winter most of all - the wind chill has been brutal. I bitch and complain about winter but you'll never hear me complain about summer - the hotter the better.

@Kelly - When there's an extreme cold warning there are extra beds available for the homeless. They open up churches, gymnasiums etc. so the homeless have some place to go. They aren't required to get in out of the cold but the option is there if they want it.

hahaha I'm from Saskatchewan, we don't even get 10 weeks of summer! I love telling people to move if they hate winter as much as they say they do. I don't mind winter actually, the snow fills the potholes, though in a trade off people don't seem to know how to drive in the winter :/ bah haha

Well our days have had a distinct autumn feeling this week. Warm and sunny through the day (28-30ish C) but cool in the mornings and night (well, cool for us lol - around 17C). But you watch. I will have jinxed us and we will now get another heatwave. Blah.

Annnnnddd...it just started snowing again. It's one of those pretty, big-flaked snowfalls. I'd probably enjoy it, if I wasn't so damned sick of snow.

LOL i think whining is part of it! i live in northern alberta and were currently at -20 without windchill and after the last couple of days it doesnt even feel that bad. in the summer people whine about how hot it is! and honestly sometimes people just say it as something to say.
lol, i said something sort of the same as you on my fb status- people started complaining that i was complainging about people complaning!

We've got another snow storm again today...though the happy part (at this time of the year), is I always look at them and think "ok...this is the last one" it's gonna melt away and next time it'll be rain!

it's like a little chant that I do that starts during the last week of February until mid-late March

I can't believe, with all the topics up for discussion, we are sitting here discussing the weather!!!! Isn't that what we humans do when we are reaching for something to say to someone? "Great day, isn't it?" "A bit cold today".

gqtm :D

Another Aussie here. I live in Melbourne. I HATE the summer - anything over 30 degrees celsius is too hot for me and we generally get higher than that in summer. We've recently had some days of really high humidity - in the mid 90%. It's not usually that bad, but it makes life pretty tough!

I love cold weather, but I don't think I could cope with the extremes some of you guys have!

WE used to live in Tasmania, which has lovely weather!

Emma, I live in Canberra, and even I don't think winters are that bad, and we pretty much get it colder than most. Seriously, if you've ever been to Canada in the winter, you'd realise our winters are mild :D

We also don't get the humidity in the summer. In Canberra, the air is pretty dry mostly. This summer has been a bit more humid than usual, because we've had a lot of rain (heck, the grass is still GREEN, I can't believe it!!), but it has also been much cooler than usual too.

But then, as I've gotten older, I find I tolerate the heat less (I used to love summer), and prefer the cooler weather :)

Winter is not cold on the coast Emma!

And yes, Bonnie it's humid. Some places more than others. But then we get the dry heat coming in from the outback, and it is worse. Hot winds that make the 45C feel like 60 :-/

I think people forget how hot our summers get, even in the southern states. A lot of Brits decide to escape winter and come to Australia for summer, and they don't know what hit them.

Jocelyn, I completely agree! I haven't left my house in 3 days because it's so effing cold out there! Aaargh!
The one thing I do like about Calgary though is that we don't get much in the way of natural disasters - no hurricanes, no tornadoes, the odd flood or blizzard now and then, and that's about it.

[deleted account]

Ah you missed a really douzy this year, we had a white Christmas for the first time in years - it was beautiful. I love the snow but then as a SAHM I don't have to go out in it so it doesn't really affect me too much lol. Fingers crossed you get here this Christmas :-)

Winter seems worse every year than the year before. I know that we have had a much colder and more snowy winter than we typically have. We usually have 1 good snow (3 inches or so) and a few smaller snows. We had the first white Christmas we've had in a long time and then it didn't seem to stop after that. It's been ridiculous. The kids have missed so much school this year and will be making up days until June 2nd. Hopefully it's all behind us now. As of late last week, we finally hit some warmer temps (we had a solid 5 or 6 days of 70+ outside) but it's cooled back off today. We are holding steady around 55 and getting some rain. I'm just hoping from this point forward, we'll be climbing up instead of dipping back down. I'm beyond ready to grab a beer and float around in the pool.

[deleted account]

Desiree 20 degrees is bikini weather in the UK lmao!

i complain constantly, and i will for the rest of my life probably, lol! all of those phrases i have said on multiple occasions.

winter here for the last week and a half has been freaking awesome! it was 60 degrees last thursday and been in the 50's and 40's for a while till a couple days ago, and has been about 32 since. we';re supposed to be getting more snow here tonight tomorrow and the next day though. it had melted from the glorious weather, but now it's all back, bah!!

Well, I can't complain about today. It's beautiful out...for winter. It's only -2 C out (27F), and the sun is shining and it's quite strong, so it's making it feel a fair bit warmer than it actually is.

After I came back to work from lunch, I left my car windows down, so that I can get some fresh air circulating in there. It'll be great to get rid of that stale aroma of central heat, coffee and toddler farts.

And no, I'm not worried about anybody stealing my car.

Now tomorrow, we're supposed to get 20-30mm of rain, and 5-10cm of snow. So it's going to be a MESS. I'll be working from home tomorrow, needless to say. I just hope that people are smart enough to shovel off their roofs today, because if you've got a couple of feet of snow on your roof, which then gets rained on...we're talking many, many tons of weight, here.

It reminds me of when a few years ago my husband company sent us on Conference to Ireland. We were on our way to the Hotel when they Tour guide told us that we were very lucky to be in Dublin at that time as they were having a heat wave and it was very hot. When Asked what the temperatures had been. She said very politely that it had been 20 degrees for the last 2 weeks. Needless to say we looked at her as though she were mad. Because 20 degrees is Winter in Africa and not in the least bit hot. There was half of Dublin in shorts and tee shirts and this SA group was walking around with jerseys and jackets!
South Africa only has 2 seasons Winter and Summer. Winter is only about a month long any long and then we are having a freezing winter. Never been a country that does thing by half measures.

I reiterate.

To me, a polar bear dip sounds about as much fun as having my ass reamed by a cheese grater, followed by a sea salt enema, all while listening to Sarah Palin saying, "You betcha!" on incessant repeat.

I bet alot of people have heart attacks doing that! And on that note, Ive always wanted to do it lol. It's so weird that something so knowingly painful and that risks your health and even your life presents as something fun to do. We humans are some weird ones. ; )

I live in Ontario, and I complain about the cold because I fucking hate it by this time of year. I'm over it - bring on spring! We also do a polar bear swim here in Lake Erie at Port Dover - I did it on January 1 2000 and will never do it again. I felt like I was going to die and couldn't breathe. My body became instantly numb and had gashed my knee open but didn't even realize it LOL!

I remember Juan Krista! I had an online friend who was buried in snow, her kids thought it was great that they could jump out the second story balcony down to the back yard!
We've had a lot of snow this year too, not too long ago we had about 24 inches dumped on us in about 3 days of straight snow. But then we had a melt in January too, and so far February isn't that bad, mornings can be below minus 20 brr...fuckityfuckingcold. But then it warms up, right now it's only minus 4 Celsius and overcast with some small snow flakes falling. But soon, spring and winter will fight in earnest and I love watching it, because the spring always wins!!! Sometime in the next 8 weeks spring will arrive in full force and my crocuses will pop out of the snow and say "hello Tara, are you really going to dig us up this year and spread us around to the sunny side of the house, or just say you're going to do it like last year..."
