When is it too early to start adjusting a child's diet?

I have diabetes, and my family has a strong history of it. My husband's family has a strong history of heart problems. Our daughter is 14 months old, and I can't help but be afraid to give her sugar or meat. So when is a good time to start adjusting her diet?

My daughter was kept away from sugar until she was about 6 years old and the "well meaning" people at school kept giving her candy! We are also vegetarian and do not eat meat. Most babies don't like meat anyway, so it shouldn't be any trouble keeping her away from meat her whole life if you want to. Whatever the diet, it is never too soon to start encouraging good eating habits. Avoiding meats can significantly reduce her chances of getting cancer and heart disease in the future. I would suggest buying flax seed and grinding it up and put it in various meals you make to be sure she gets enough omega 3's. Flax has no real taste to it but is a great non fish source of Omega 3 oils!

This may be something that you should discuss with your dr. However many people do not let there kids eat meat from the start, and monitoring your child’s sugar intake is always a good thing. I believe this is a very personal decision as to what you feel is best, and encouraging a healthy eating habits is important from the start. If this is something that you know you want to do my only suggestion would be to make sure your child is getting the nutrition they may be missing out on from a different source. For example protein.
