Advice on second pregnancy...

Ashley - posted on 09/12/2010 ( 1 mom has responded )

I was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix on March 16th of this year when I went in for my 20 week ultrasound I was 2cm dialated and my membranes were funneling. The next day I was admitted into the hospital and had to be on trendelenburg bedrest and was not able to get up for anything! I was there for 4 weeks and the morning I turned 24 weeks I started to contract so I was transferred to a different hospital. Two weeks later my water broke and I started having contractions. My son was breech so they had to do a c-section. I had to have a classic cut c-section (vertical cut) because they needed to get him out fast. He was born April 29th 2010 at 8:44pm weighing 1lb 15oz... He was in the NICU for three months after many struggles including several blood transfusions, a PDA ligation, luckily only one infection, and because of his PDA Ligation has left vocal cord paralysis. Because of his vocal cord paralysis 4 1/2 months later he is still on his NG feeding tube.

I have been told that for a second pregnancy I cam have a cerclage but I have to wait atleast 2 years because of the classic c-section I have a chance of my uterus rupturing, also I will not be able to carry a baby past 36 weeks... I would love a second child in a couple of years but am not sure if it is a logical decision. I love my son and wouldn't trade him for the world, but I'm not sure it would be fair to another baby to put he or she at risk now that I know what could happen...

Any thoughts?

I had my son at 25 weeks! I had my second child a year and a half later! I had a cerclage with her but still went into labor. I was on hospital bed rest for 6 weeks and home bed rest for 8 weeks and she was born at 31 weeks and was healthy she just needed to learn to eat! I still want another one because though it is a very rough year in your life it makes the REST of your life worth it! Just remember every out come is different! My first was born at 25 weeks weighing 1 pound 13 ounces and had very few minor complications! And now that you are aware of your situation you can take precautions to lower the risk to the pregnancy! Hope this helps and its not to late!
