Taking time out

This morning I was watching a morning show, and there was a segment debating whether it is okay for a mother to take some "selfish time". Selfish time in their terms was taking time out to read a book, have a cup of tea while flicking through a magazine etc.

I object to the term "selfish time". I don't think it is selfish to take ten minutes to do something relaxing - especially in those moments where everything is piling up and you're stressed out of your mind.

Of course, there are moments where it is just not plausible to take ten minutes for yourself, but one woman was saying that because you chose to be a mother you sacrifice any time for yourself.

I don't agree with this at all, I think taking time for yourself every day is incredibly beneficial to a mother's wellbeing. It makes her happier, and less stressed, and that creates a stress free environment for her child.

Just wanted to get everyone else's opinion on this matter?

i strongly believe "if the mother is not happy, the family is not happy." so there you go....if the mom doesn't get time to get de-stressed then she will not be able to perform or care better for the child. so i guess, its in the family's best interest to give time off to moms. cheers to all moms!!

Wow, they really referred to it as selfish time??? I much prefer the term "preventing insanity time"....If you don't have time to yourself, you go crazy, every person needs wind down time. If I'm not happy and calm, I surely can't be the best mom I can be for my family. Its not selfish by any means, its keeping balance.

First off I dont think these people are parents. Second there is no such thing as selfish time. Its called "me time" and thats not selfish. Given the kids are taken care of. Who cares if the laundry is piled up and the dishes need to be done. If we dont take time out once in awhile we're left with no hair.
