Hello, help when do you start to potty train? My son is 22months and pats his diaper when he is wet.

Now, they say if a child can go a while w/out peeing in the diaper that its a sign that, his physical body is ready for potty training, such as when he wakes up from naptime and has not wet. My niece would also pat herself when she was 13 months old and wanted to go potty! I didn't get so lucky w/ my kids. I tried to start early w/my son and he was doing so well until i got big into my 2nd pregnancy and I stopped it! However, he was trained before turning 3! I think boys are ready about 3-4 months before turning 3 at the latest. But, if you can do it before, smart boy you have!

my daughter is 21 months old and about 2 weeks ago she pooped in her diaper and i didnt know it then i heard her in my bathroom and she had taken her diaper off and put the poop in the toilet so i kinda got the idea that she may be ready to potty train so i just put panties on her and she has been wearing them every since she has had about 3 accidents but i am very patient with her. she tells me when she needs to potty and we go. so i agree with everyone i think it is up to your child when they are ready.

Quoting Nadine:

My son is 21months and we started potty training when he was 19months.
As soon as they can know that they have wee'd or pooed then they are ready to start potty training. I decided with my son that there is no stess, he is still a baby actually (as is yours). So every morning I put pull up or an underpants on and explain to him that if he wants to wee then he must tell me and we will go to the potty. He does still have accidents but I don't make a fuss, just change him and explain again that he must tell me so that we can go to the potty. It is going very well. Sometimes when he want to poo then he brings me a nappy to put on and other times he goes to the potty.

If your son pats himself when he is wet then I think that he is defnitely ready to start potty training.

Good luck!!

Thanks sooooo much I am starting now with the pull-ups.

i agree with nadine. if your child is smart enough to know he is wet then he is ready. i worked at a daycare with 9 two year olds and learned quickly that potty training is totally up to the child. if they are ready it will be fast and easy, but if not than they will be having accidents in their pants still. my son will be 2 in jan and showa no signs, but i also have a 2 month old that he sees in diapers.
