my son has always been a tall boy. he took after his father's side. he started walking with my help at around 15 months. since then everyone has been telling me 'oh he'll be soon walking on his own' & that hasn't happened except for a couple of times when he just went on his own & came back terrified knowing he had been walking alone. i try to push him & encourage him but still he doesn't want to let go. anything similar happened to you? he walks well & even runs but he's so afraid to let go

My son went through the same thing....he held on to someone's hand for a long time even though he could walk on his own. I just let him take his time and when he was ready he finally let go and went on his own. Now I have a little girl who's walking and won't hold hands at all. She wouldn't even hold hands so that I could teach her to walk, she was determined to do it all on her own. I think some kids need the security but it's not a bad thing.....at least he stays by you....it's hard to keep track of my girl who won't hold hands, she's always off doing her own thing.

he did fall a couple of times & that has pu't him in today's position. i'm just wondering when i can see my boy alone! would love so much for it to happen. i'm hoping that as he gains more sense he'll understand more. thankyou

encourage him when he walks by himself. Praise him, clap, and even give him a high five to show that walking by himself is ok and that he'll be safe. Another question of concern...did somethin "bad" or "frightening" (to him of course) happen when he walked off by himself. Did someone knock him over? Did he miss a step and fall? That would be another reason why he wants to hold hands for security, because he knows if he's holding mom's hand, nothing bad will happen.
