Hi everyone. My 21 month old daughter was 9 pounds 4 ounces at birth but is now very small. She is 78cm tall and only 22 pounds (10kg) . She is energetic and very smart but people comment all the time and it is starting to worry me, especially when their child is bigger and younger. She is not at all skinny, just small and she eats 3 meals a day and snacks. Do you think i should worry?

My son who is 22 months is also small, he's only about 23 pounds. At his 18 month check up he was only in the 5th percentile. The dr said he was not worried because he is growing and he's staying on his own curve. The dr did recommend keeping him on whole milk even though many children switch to 2% at his age. He's very active and healthy otherwise. Some days he eats everything and others he won't eat anything, it just depends on his mood. I will only worry if the dr worries, and right now his dr isn't worried. Take care and hope this helps!

Jack is small too. I don't worry about. It is annoying how people always comment how small they are (as if you didn't already know that!). Jack eats well some days and other days, not so much. He is having speech delays, but I don't thin that has anything to do with his size.

I have twin girls,Hannah & Laura.....they are 21 months old as well. Hannah weights 31lbs and Laura is only 25lbs. Hannah is tall and Laura is short,lol......it's just their make and they look so different. If your daughter is happy, active and healthy don't worry:) Every toddler has a different weight/height and it's hard to say what is "normal"....my girls are so not alike...hope this helps you a bit. Don't worry!

Hi Mary! My 21 month old daughter was 6 pounds 10 ounces at birth and is very small now, as well. She is 78cm tall and only 20 pounds! My daughter is energetic, smart, but worries me because she is not a good eater. In fact, she takes periactin at night an appetite enhancer and trust me w/out it she does not eat the following day! You should not worry whatsoever because she does eat! What I have to do is this: everyday 2-3 times a day I mix Carnation Breakfast in her milk (it is cheaper than pediasure)! Also, I have to add Duocal to her food (a calorie booster) I'm lucky to get two meals in her daily! After listening to this I'm sure it has built your confidence!

No, don't worry, don't listen to others, they will just make you stress! As long as your daughter is eating, drinking and still growing, then she should be fine. Make sure you go to your local Maternal Health Nurse for reassurance and advice.

As long as she is growing and gaining, even slowly, then she should be fine. Kids grow at different paces and while it is hard not to compare to other kids, try to look at her growth over time.

My son is small for his age too. But he was preemie (only 3 lbs 15oz) and both myself and husband are short. But my son who is now almost 22 months wears a 12 month pant and it's still too big. In length and waist. But he keeps up no problem, and has no mental developments. Plus he is growing on a steady scale, and his doc said that's all that matters. As long as they keep growing on a steady chart they are fine. He has been only in the 5% of his age group. So don't worry, all should be fine :)

Please donot worry, I feel you are speaking about my Nia. Don't worry too much about what others say, I consulted so many paediatricians regarding the same, started some diet supplementation etc. but she gains in height but not an ounce. If your sweetie is active and happy, you need not worry at all. Probably she has a lean built. Take care.

Thanks Pamela, Im not exactly huge at 5'4', so maybe she just takes after her mum. My sister is even smaller so maybe it's just in the Genes. Thanks for your post Joy.

not at all at 11 month my son was only 9 kilos and everyone say ohh my he is small !!! even doctors which of corse sends alarms bells ringing then at 13 months he shot up in hight and weight and is now 13.2 kilos!! my niece was always very small but at 2 years old it was like her legs grew her weight stayed the same and now she has these beautiful long legs ( she is 2.5) which surprised her mum cause she always say ohh poor girl with have my short stocky legs. she is happy and healthy thats all that counts take into account your height and weight as a child. I was always referred to as the tiny one in primary school then in high school I short up Im 5'9 now. my point is babies grow at different rates and I have some friends with very tall children and some with tiny children they all play together they don't care why should we ?
