There's a GREAT book called The No Cry Potty Training Solution by Elizabeth Pantley.
There's a quiz in there you can take & the answers add up to a score which tells you if they're far from ready, ready or inbetween. They have a great section on pre training :)
Maybe check to see if your local library has one first to see if it's something you'd be interested in

I'm not sure, but my twins are 18 months old and I haven't started them yet. I am definetely going to go out and purchase new pottys very soon because they are both pulling their pants down and pulling off their pampers!!! That is definetely a sign to me to start!

I started putting my 3 year old on the potty about 15 months old, she caught on and was fully potty trained 2 months after her 2nd b-day. I know some children catch on slow cause they are scared of the toilet. I started putting my twins on the toilet just to get them used to it. They are 18 months old. One of them pees in the potty, the other is still a little shy. I think you will know when it's time. The signs will be there. =) The one twin tells me, "I peeeeed". lol All kids are different, so just watch for signs.
