Have any of you ladies started your babies on finger foods? Brooke will be 8 months on the 15th and she is just getting her first tooth. I have been SCARED to give her any type of food that she could choke on! I'm scared that she won't chew...Do they know how to chew yet? Or do they just learn how as you start them on finger foods? LOL I'm terrified of her choking!!

What are some good ideas of easy finger foods? I've heard lots about the Gerber Puffs? Grated cheese? Things that I could start her on that would be easy for her to eat.

Thanks

I have done the puffs; biter biscuits and today I cooked some green beans and cut some up and gave them to my son who will be 8 months on the 17th...he does really well...I think most babies like it more than being fed because they get to learn how to feed themselves...he makes a big mess but that is completely okay with me :)

The first finger foods I gave my daughter (who will be 8 months on the 9th and still has no teeth) were organic teething biscuits from Healthy Timez. They're great b/c they're big enough to grip and she learned where her mouth was by eating them. Plus, they're designed for teethers, much like zwybak (sp?) toast yet are flavored in maple and vanilla, which she loves. Messy though, but isn't everything?

If you are nervous I'd start with the mum mums- they dissolve really quickly- faster than the puffs. They are also larger for babies to learn to hold things to eat- but they are great practice for the smaller items. At first my son couldn't get the last bite into his mouth because it was hidden inside his hand- but he soon figured it out and it was an exciting accomplishment to watch!

My son is a HUGE fan of the Baby Mum-Mums...Everytime he sees me open up a package his little eyes get huge and his hands reaches for me...I also just started feeding him Mandarin Oranges They come in a can in the canned fruit isle packaged by Del Monte...He has been sick and they are great...Alot of Vitamin C and they are very small...I just tear them into 2 or 3 peices and he goes to town...Its a HUGE mess tho, but well worth it...Hes funny to watch b/z he thinks hes got it in his mouth and it slides right into his lap...Let your baby have fun w/ it tho is my saying, They are learning..

we pretty much just went right to finger food, my little one isn't fond of spoons, small peices of avacoda or banana are great soft enough to mush up with thier gums, cooked carrot or apples cooked soft enough to gum up and cut up small enough that they won't choke, dry cereal like cherios rits crackers, cut up peaches, cooked green beans,

The puffs are great. They dissolve so quickly you dont have to worry about choking. They yogurt melts and little cheese crunchies are good too. I just try pretty much anything that is safe for them to eat. Just give them a little bit and watch them closely. My daughter will be 8 months the 23rd and is pretty good about jsut coughing something up if it doesnt go down right. It's amazing what they can "chew". The Mum Mums are good too. They can hold them and feed themselves with those really good.
