Naps

It seems like every single baby I ever hear about at this age has a consistent nap schedule. My daughter sleeps wonderfully at night (knock on wood) but has no "morning" or "afternoon" nap that I always hear about.

She doesn't really nap at the same time every day - although kinda close. But she only naps 30-45 minutes, except for sometimes when she sleeps longer. There's no rhyme or reason.

She goes to bed at the same time at night and wakes up at the same time in the morning. That's very consistent. So why can't she nap?

Any thoughts on why on earth she might be so inconsistent? Or anyone else who can commiserate?

I've noticed that my son will wake up after 30-45 minutes of napping too. I would usually go get him immediately, but now I let him cry it out (usually does so for 5 mins of less), and he'll go back to sleep for another hour at least. I think they just randomly wake up, like they do in the middle of the night. However, we're actually awake to hear their little waking times.

My daughter has been home sick this week, so I've been with her for her naps (she's normally at daycare). She almost always wakes up at 30 or 45 minutes exactly. So I've watched her and ran in instantly to give her paci back to her. That gets her back to sleep for much longer (over 2 hours today). But, that's not a real solution. They can't do that at day care.

My daughter is like this too. It seems like her need to nap depends on a lot of things, what we do that day, what she's eating, is she constipated, is she teething, congested, etc. I wouldn't worry about it. One thing has changed however, she used to nap 3 times a day and has cut it down to two about a month ago. She now naps about 2 hours after waking up in the morning, around 10-12 and naps in the afternoon between 4 and 6pm. We just moved and that has thrown off her night schedule. She used to sleep from 8.30 to 7.30, and now she wakes usually once a night around 4am to eat and then sleeps again until 8 or so, sometimes waking earlier. If this happens we take her into our bed and she goes back to sleep with us.

I am in the same situation! She sleeps great every night, but nap time is a joke. She either will sleep for 2 hours morning and afternoon, or NOT AT ALL! I'm wondering what to do!

I'm having issues with naptime too, but in reverse...I don't know if my son is napping TOO MUCH!! He sleeps through the night at about 12 to 13 hours and has a 2 to 3 hour nap mid morning and then sometimes (not everyday) there's also an afternoon nap of about an hour or 2. I don't know if he's napping too much!

I have just been to 'sleep school' for the same reason.

The nurses found that I waited too long to put my baby to bed for a nap and that he was overtired and overactive. They taught me about 'subtle disengagement signs'. If I see one of these, this is the time to put him in his bed. If you are interested, I can type them out for you. He usually has a bit of a whingey cry for about 10 minutes and then goes to sleep. If he starts getting an upset cry, I go into him and put my hand on him for 30 seconds and then walk out. I go back in 3 minutes if he is still crying. I have only had to go into him 3 times at the most before he is asleep.

I can't believe the change in him now that he is having 2 or 3 naps a day. He is so much happier and is quite content to sit on the floor and play with his toys now, whereas he used to whinge for my attention non stop before sleep school.

My daughter has absolutely NO schedule at all. She used to, but lately she doesnt. She will sleep through the night most nights, but every so often she will wake up hungry at around 2 or 3. Then go back to sleep and then wake up again anywhere between 7 and 10 eat and then be up for the day. She will either stay up until 3 or 4 and take a 30min to 1 hr nap or stay up til 6 and sleep for about 2-3hrs and then go to bed around 10. It really all depends on how much we wear her out during the day, She likes to go exploring around the house and play with her toys independently, which doesnt require too much energy, so if we really play with her and wear her out the more she will sleep during the day or at night depending. But dont feel bad she went from being VERY regular to doing pretty much whatever she is comfortable with.

Oh, thank you for your response! It is so nice to hear my Clara isn't the only one.

And I guess I wouldn't care so much - since she sleeps through the night well (knock on wood) - except her lack of a decent afternoon nap causes her to HAVE to go to bed by 6:30, which leaves such little time for my husband and I to have with her after we get off work.

My son is the same way. There's a general time for a morning nap, but length varies and other napping varies. We've tried putting him on a nap schedule, but it's just not for him. We've also found that he refuses to nap while anywhere other than Nana's, car seat, or his crib.
