Sippy Cup

My little guy can drink out of a sippy cup just fine when I lay him down or lean him back. But he can't figure out how to drink out of it sitting up because he doesn't put his head back or his arms up...anyone else have this problem or suggestions?

Just before my daughter learnt to put her head back and lift her arms she through her whole body back, so make sure you have a pillow behind him until he figures it out. I also had to give her a cup that didn't have the no spill on it at first so it was easier for her to get out and didn't have to worry about having to learn 2 skills at the same time, once she mastered tipping her head and lifting arms I switched to a non spill.

Hi Shannon, just an update to my last post - I tried the straw cup again and my little girl started sucking without any problems, must have been all of the work she has been doing with the sippy cup. She is still chewing it a bit but holds it and sucks so much better now. May be worthwhile to give it a go and see how your little one takes to it. Good luck

My daughter has also been drinking out of the cups with a straw. The straw goes all the way down to the bottom so she doesnt have to learn to tip her head back. Its rather easy and it doesnt spill. Has 2 handles for her to hold it on her own. I got mine from Target. Im sure any store that is similar will have them.. :)

Mycah does this too. He's been able to hold it and eat since 6 months but he can't seem to lift it high enough when he's sitting. For about a week or so I've been using a straw when we are out. That works great and he caught on very quickly and now loves drinking from a straw.

You just read my mind Shannon as I was going to ask that same question. My little girl does the same thing. She will grab her sippy cup and if it is full she will drink from it holding the handles, however, when the liquid goes down she cannot seem to grasp that she has to lift her arms up and put her head back. She will put her head back and lift her hands up when I hold the cup, however, gets frustrated trying to do it herself and just throws the cup. I have also tried the straw cup but she prefers to chew on the straw which isn't good. We now just keep the liquid at a low level and continue showing her how to hold the cup and use our fingers to lift her elbows up. We will see how we go but it will be good to hear how other mums have found it.

Our little girl has been drinking out of straw type sippy cups since she was about 6months old, you could try one of them. Otherwise it just takes some time, teaching them the phase/aciton chin up can help. Hope you find something that works for him.
