My son climbs everything there is to climb and I dont want to take out every furniture or place things out of his reach, so he can have the comfort of a home, how do i distract and teach a 16month old without spanking?

to distract you'd just have to be on the ball ALLL the time. have you considered flicking the hand when he touches dangerous things? my son learned very quickly what was a don't touch - not as a form of discipline like he'd done something wrong, just that "if i touch this it hurts". they can't even disassociate from the object to really know what hurts them yet, just that "when i touch scissors it hurts" or "when i touch this glass vase it hurts". we were able to keep much of our breakable stuff out b/c after a few days of this he never went back to those things. he learned "toys" and "non toys" and it was pretty cut and dry to him. also; i've heard that teaching them how to climb DOWN stairs is so important, rather than trying to keep them away from them altogether.
