typically babies should not have rice cereal until 4 months unless otherwise suggested by their doctor. Babies dont have the ability to digest anything but breastmilk/formula until this point.

im actually getting ready to start our little girl next month...shes gonna be 4 months nov. 10th...we tried it in her bottle a few times (primarily because she has acid reflux and it did nothing for helping her sleep longer) but she already mimics us when we eat with the little chewy face and she has really good neck control and sits up really well already...those are some signs you should look for to see if they are ready...but usually between 4-6 months is when you can start them

My pediatrician told me that my baby doesnt know when he's full/still hungry. and that eating 6 oz at a time should be the limit. I def don't agree with this because he knows when he is still hungry--and when he's full and just wants to suck he pushes the bottle out and goes for his thumb. I started him on cereal a couple weeks ago because he seemed to never be satisfied and when he'd get his bottle he'd chug it like he was starving. I dont agree with what my pedi said (and I ahve sched the 4mo appt with a different one) esp the 6oz since my son usually needs 6-8 to be full. so i didnt ask about cereal. my mom gave it to me when I was 2 mo and DH's mom gave it to him when he was 2 weeks. I dont give it to him all the time, just on occasion when he seems to be super hungry

My pediatrician told me to wait on my breastfed baby until 4 months but he is a big boy and I felt like it was the right time at 3 months so I started feeding him cereal then and a couple weeks later we moved onto vegetables. Not only has he taken to all of it right away but it made him more regular (luckily).

honestly, pediatricians say 4 months, but my mother says it used to be given a lot earlier on, at like 6 weeks. now, i am a first time mom, and will follow doctor's orders, but certain things i consider guidelines. like this. kids used to be fed rice cereal at such a young age, and we're all fine. i think it's your own judgement. i think it will help your baby sleep better because her tummy will be more full.

If your baby gets constipated on the baby rice, try giving her pureed apple to counteract this in the evening. Apples are very good for loosening up the bowels.

I just started my four month old girl on rice cereal a couple of weeks ago because she showed all the signs that she was ready. She loves it but word of warning - it made her really constipated! I am going to try oatmeal baby cereal as I hear is easier to digest. All the other foods I have tried her on so far have been fine. Have fun!

I tried starting cereal a few weeks ago in the evening with the hope that my daughter would sleep better and not wake so many times in the night to eat. It's been slow going because sometimes she is interested and other times she wants nothing to do with it. I would just take it slow and your baby will let you know if they are ready.

I have a big baby, he is almost 4 months but I stated feeding him at 3 months. He just seemed to do better. I mix rice cereal with veggies and he loves it. I have found that he really likes it with a spoon. However, Sassy makes a special bottle made to push the rice cereal with milk through. It was about 7.00 for two of them.

Dr.'s do NOT know everything! if your baby's appetite in insatiable then yes! my boy started cereal at 2 1/2 months. he was drinking 40oz of milk and still wanted more. he was ready. it depends on the baby. not all babies were created equal when he/she is ready you will know. Listen to your doctor but listen to your mommy instinct first!! They really really don't have all the answers.

With your pediatricians consent you can begin feeding your baby rice cereal at 4 months, but if you can wait until he or she is 6 months old that is preferable. Your child will show signs of being ready, or needing the extra food.Babies digestive systems aren't fully developed until they are 6 months, and studies have shown that children who aren't introduced to cereal until they are 6 months are healthier and have less health concerns. I however just started feeding my son ( who will be 4 months next week) rice cereal, our pediatrician said it would be ok, and that he was ready. Talk to your doctor.

I started my daughter on rice cereal at about 2 1/2 months, after formula did not seem to sustain her appetite for more than 2 hours. The ped. said she probably wouldn't be able to eat it off the spoon, but she has been able to, and she loves it. I started w/ 1 tbsp cereal mixed with some formula. Good luck to you

wait till at least 4 months longer if allergies run in the family (not just food allergies) talk to ur child pediatrician to find out the best time for your baby

My son turned 3 months on 10/16, and the following weekend we started ceral. My doctor gave us the okay to help him sleep at night. We only give him a little bit with his feeding right before bed. And it is really helping him make it through the night.

I have been asking the same thing...my baby is 3 months and a week old.....she just isnt being satisfied by the bottles...i mixed up a bit of cereal last night, and gave her 3 or 4 bites and she did really well with it. It really helped...she stopped crying and was happy...Normally she constantly wants a bottle in her mouth. She normally drinks about 5-6 oz in about 2-3 hours. Which is getting quite expensive, as she on a high cal formula. My baby was born at 28 weeks weight 2 pounds 4 oz...and now she weighs 9 pounds just off formula alone. So i know shes getting good nutrition from the formula but she constantly crys....until i give her a bottle. So im hoping the cereal will help. Oh and after her cereal she 'dry nursed" for about 20 mins, and then still took 4 oz of formula lol

My daughter was born 7/27 and she had horrible throwing up spells at EVERY feeding....we just couldn't seem to get it under control. She had an upper GI and many formula changes, so everything was ruled out. We put cereal in her bottles starting at 6 weeks (even though I was TOTALLY AGAINST it - I felt it was worth a shot because puking was so bad) and she loved it, and had no problems at all. She already was on 24 cal formula recipe so I was worried about the calorie intake....well we did cereal at every feeding and we put 2.5 tsp for 3 ounces. She is now on Similac Alimentum (it's predigested) and that formula is really thick, so we recently stopped putting cereal in her bottles, and she is doing perfectly fine now, plus I don't feel guilty anymore for giving her cereal in the bottle. It really should be a last resort for puking issues only. It does NOT help with sleeping. We tried the other night to give it to her with a spoon and she didn't do well...she threw it up. We will try again @ 4 months.

I have already started my daughter on rice cereal. She is 3.5 months, born July 14th. She has reflux and threw up the regular formula because it was too thin. She digests the rice cereal fine though! I just measure it with the formula scoop and I do 1 scoop per 4oz. The measurements suggested for it are 1tsp per oz..so it seems about right to me. Also, The cereal making them sleep through the night is a myth. My daughter mostly has slept through the night since she was born, but sometimes she wakes up once during the night. The cereal at night makes her wake up more often then not.

I had my ped. tell me that with bottle fed babies that they can receive rice cereal around two months (that seems to young to me), but with breastfed babies they can go up to six months. I think it is up to you and your ped.

Thanks, I will hold out a few more weeks. She isn't sleeping at all and I am hoping it will fix it.
