Hi all,
My 6 month old just started eating baby food. We give her applesauce and or pears once a day. I am unsure why but she is having trouble with bowel movements. When she does they are hard and pellet like (constipation?) I am beginning to think she is not ready for solids? Does anyone else have this problem? Is there anything else I can do about it? If anyone knows a solution I would love to hear it! Thanks

You might try giving her yellow/orange veggies a few days a week instead of fruit. Sweet potatoes, squash, and carrots are pretty easy for them to digest. Also, be sure that she is still taking the same amount of milk/formula as before. My daughter loves baby food so much that she would eat a whole jar of it and then refuse her bottle.

I would try something easier to digest like the rice cereal or the orange vegetables like pumpkin or sweet potato. Also have you been giving her some water? Sometimes babies get constipated if they are on formula (don't know if you are breastfeeding or not) or solids as they get a little bit dehydrated and some cool boiled water in a bottle in between feeds might help.

My baby is 6 months and we've been on rice cereal once a day for 3 weeks.

It wasn't until we started with bananas and avacados for a twice a day feeding that he has been struggling with BM's. And I even puree that with breastmilk for a creamy consistancy. I'm not sure what else to do except maybe cut back to once a day again.

I started out with baby rice with mixed with her formula milk (in a bowl) made sure it was the same thickness as her milk to start with and built it up from there a fourtnight later and she is now on puree foods and loves it. I was advised by the healthvisitor not to give her fruits to begin with as they are too rich for thir wee tummys.

Hope this helps. All the best for 2010 xJOx

Have you tried any other types of baby food?? mylee is 6months old and she eats applesauce or another fruit at lunch time and then i give her a veggie at supper time..she has not been constipated from it..when she was a few months old and not using having BM the doc told me to give her prune juice..i never used it because as soon as i asked she started going..but anyway its worth a try..she should be ready for solids at her age.

My son is nearly 6mths and has had the same problem when I started him on solids. He went from a poo a day to once a week and was totally miserable for the whole day when he tried to get one out. I persisted with the solids (mostly apples and pears) but reduced the farex as I think thats what he was getting constipated from. We had a very distressing day when he had a back log that we resorted to a bit of sugar in a bottle of formula (sugar helps bowel motions according to the 'Baby Love' book) and he eventually went the next day. They say don't use sugar longer than 24hrs. You could try using some prune juice mixed in the solids. I've done this several times now and my son is now going once or twice a day. Don't know if he just had to learn how to get a solid poo out - they are still quiet solid but they don't seem to bother him as much.
Double check with a health pro about sugar or prune juice first but its better than drugs or a suppository.
hope this helps.

Bananas bind up so if you're little ones having trouble maybe stop giving them banana for a while or less often.

My little one won't do baby rice and went straight to fruit (apple/pear) she started getting more hard poo (graphic sorry) but I've just started formula feeding and she's gone runny again.

My baby is 5 months old and will only eat formula, cereal and oatmeal- all things that taste like formula. We have tried all friuts with her and she refuses to eat anything else. maybe she just needs more time. she is gaining weight and healthy.
