I had my baby on July 17 and have been breastfeeding...why are my nipples still sore after 8 weeks? I have tried Lansinoh Lanolin cream, I have checked and double checked his latch, I have walked around without a shirt on! But still so sore...what gives?!

Yes do push through it! As a first time mom, I have just been bombarded with one thing after another....it does get better just like everyone has been telling me. :)

Oh great! Glad it's working out well for you. I was diagnosed with mastitis this weekend...still dealing with a fever/aches and extreme pain. Feel like I'm ready to wave my white flag but I'm gonna try to push through.

I actually went to a lactation consultant last week who changed the positioning of the baby while nursing...I was having such a huge let down that he was pushing the nipple out of the way to properly swallow the milk...so she is having me lie back more to where the baby is almost directly on top of me that way he is having to pull the milk up....which helps with the flow. He was also spitting up just about every time I burped him, but no he hardly spits up at all~! She also gave me a nipple shield and prescribed me Dr. Newman's nipple cream. I have also been wearing breast shells so that air can get to my nipples...having them up against moist nursing pads is a breading ground for yeast plus when the pads rubbed on my already sore nipples it made it that much more painful! :( I have already seen a huge difference!!!! My nipples are hardly sore anymore even when nursing and they look much better too!

Aw, poor baby (and you.) I can't imagine drinking blood. My sister had traces of blood in her breast milk too. It would turn the milk pink. I did the gel therapy at the beginning and it gave me such relief. Do you have any of those?

Thank you for the encouragement! It has been extremely tempting to throw in the towel. What keeps me going are the benefits Noah gets from breastfeeding that he can't get from formula. It has been especially difficult in the past few days since he is constantly having bloody spit up due to my issue. This morning it was a scary amount of blood--mainly blood, no milk. I can put up with the pain no problem, but when it comes to Noah and my issue causing him problems, that I won't put up with. I am going to see a lactation consultant this week, and if symptoms don't improve soon I may have to throw in the towel.

Oh no! That stinks...what a trooper though, keep it up! Unfortunately I have no advice being that I'm new to this myself but I do know that pain. I can pretty much guarantee that if my nipples were still sore I would have given up so good for you!
